Elf Tensei Kara no Cheat Kenkoku-ki
Episode XVIII: Quiet Before the Storm
"You're looking forward to alcohol! The mead we drank the other day was delicious."
Lucier talks to me in a good mood when I come home.
Until now, as they say about Momiji and Cranberries, I have been collecting them, but I guess I understand the purpose and am motivated.
Elves all like alcohol. When I wasn't ruled by the Empire, I sold off extra food and bought liquor.
Mead and wine are expensive, so I bought a wheat ale and drank it during the harvest festival.
"The liquor I make is so much sweeter and tastier than mead."
"You make cranberries alcoholic, don't you? Is it sweet and sour?"
"Cranberries are one of the ingredients, except for the main one. How to make it is winter fun"
"Winter fun? Maybe this is the first time I can't wait for winter."
Lucier is laughing with pleasure. That just makes me feel clearer over here.
I knew Lucier would look good with a smile.
"But... Cyril, if you can afford to build alcohol or something, you might have to make something more stomachy, and now the village is in trouble"
Lucier, who was floating, turns around and looks serious.
It's a Lucier way of thinking that you're looking at my job and you know what's going on in the village.
"Lucier's got a point, but that's not gonna work."
I smile gently at Lucier.
"What do you mean?
"Lucier's right, it's important to collect food to live. But, you know, that's the only way people won't be able to work hard."
"Is that right?
"That's right. I get tired of working hard just to live. Fun tomorrow, I have hope, so I can work hard on a hard now. This is my way of thinking, but there are only two main tasks of a village chief."
That is the admiration I have felt when I have seen my father, who was the village chief as Cyril, and also the sense I have gained through my experience so far.
"One is to protect the lives of everyone in the village. It's about using the power of the villagers to make sure that everyone can live."
So I'm working on food issues and improving the environment in the village.
"And the other thing is to dream to everyone in the village. Making such dreams believe that there will be a much better day tomorrow than today. As soon as I've had those two, I can tell you I'm a village chief."
Turn the villagers forward.
I believe that is the condition of a good village chief.
When my father was village chief, all the villagers were laughing. I was trying to believe tomorrow. I want to live in such a village.
Lucier looks at me with a gleaming eye when I talk about the smell of blue.
That makes me so happy and lit up.
"Cyril now, that was kinda cool. Oh, right. It's just boring to be alive. In the winter, after the battle, there's plenty of food, and so, Cyril and I say you're free, in front of the fireplace, we drink a little bit of alcohol, can we dream about that tomorrow"
"Yeah, fine. I want to spend that time with Lucier, too. If you want to add one, I want you to say it again."
"... no"
Reddish his face and Lucier turns away.
I'm sure he'll do it if you really ask him to do it then.
Lunch time came when we talked like that.
I have work to do again this afternoon, so I need to make something neat.
"Shall I bake some bread today?"
"That's unusual. Cyril, Switon, and all the noodles are made, and the bread is rarely cooked."
"Because you didn't have any important ingredients."
That's what I said, take the bottle out of the shelf. The bottle contains water and cranberries.
White foam floats amazingly on the water.
"Wow, Cyril, something cumbersome, white and disgusting. I can't do this. We have to throw it away."
"It's outrageous to throw this away. I took a whole week to finish it."
Yes, what I made was yeast liquid made with cranberries on the water for a week. Available for a variety of applications.
"Look, Lucier. Bread, wheat, and water. This is how you always do it, you put it in a big bowl. Plus, add cranberry yeast liquid."
That's what I say, refining the wheat, which eventually turned into a seed of bread about a turn bigger than my fist.
"Oh, there's important wheat. You're really gonna be okay eating that, aren't you?
"Oh, trust me. So, put a cloth on this and put it away for a while"
I gauge the timing as the fermentation begins and I hear the air leak.
All right, primary fermentation is enough.
"All right, that'll be enough. Here, look."
"It's a lot bigger than just now. It's about triple bloated."
"This is the power of yeast liquid made from cranberries. You inflate the bread with the gas when you break down the sugar. So here's what I'm gonna do!
I slap hugely bloated bread on the slab several times.
"Cyril, you can't play with food."
"No, no, this is fine cooking too. Drain the fabric once and let in new air. Then the yeast reactivates and the dough becomes fine. It is shaped and reduced to secondary fermentation."
"Sorry, Cyril. I didn't know much about yeast or fermentation."
"Simply put, the bread becomes so fluffy that the nutrients originally found in the wheat can be absorbed easily and tastefully changed."
"That's amazing. And it's nice to have such a large amount of bread sauce with that amount of wheat."
Until I started cooking recently, Lucier, who kept the kitchen, seemed to be paying attention to the fact that she could eat a cup with less wheat.
One day, I want you not to worry about that.
"It's quick to be surprised. It swells more when you bake it."
I lay the little pieces of bread on an iron plate made of abuse of authority and set them on fire in the stone.
All you have to do is wait a while and you can do it.
"Wow, fun. Cyril, if you could cook so many things, I wish you'd done it a long time ago."
"I won't tell you that. It's a promise. I'll be on cooking duty for a while."
"That's it, I feel a little complicated. I liked cooking for Cyril... Little by little, but I'm starting to learn how to cook Cyril, so let me make it once in a while too, 'cause I'm losing now, but I'll catch up properly."
"It's about Lucier, so I thought I'd say I'd make it every day"
"You can't let me eat something mean and unsavory. And Cyril, she cooked all sorts of dishes, and until I ran out of stuff I wanted to make, I thought sometimes I'd be just about ready to make it."
"There's nothing unsavory about it. I like Lucier's cooking. As much as I want to eat every day."
"Thanks, but now I want to remember all the delicious dishes Cyril knows. Then I'll arrange the dishes you made for me. Then I'm sure you can serve something delicious."
"Looking forward to it."
Just because Lucier will make it is the best seasoning. I can't help but look forward to it now.
◇
"Look, I burned it."
I'll take the bread out of the stone. The bread was swollen about double compared to before baking.
I'll put a knife in the center of the bread and pinch the dried cranberries in half and the dried chicken meat in the other half.
"Really, I got annoyed. Cyril, can I eat?
"Oh, good."
When I say so, Lucier grabs a loaf of bread containing dried cranberries.
"Soft. And sweeter and fuzzier than usual. Bread is so delicious."
also usually when i see lucier cheeks bread, i want to stroke my head asexually.
"It's delicious compared to what I'm making in this village, but I don't think it's enough"
Yes, it's just water, wheat and yeast, so there's not enough punch. At least I can make something better with eggs or butter, but there is no livestock in this village.
For once, there are horses that combine farming and mobility, but they can't get enough milk from the horses, and they're hard to get pregnant with, so it's tough to use them all the time.
In view of the future, it will be important to obtain livestock in parallel with the development of stable salt supply routes.
Given the cost performance and the manpower you can put on in the village, it's almost a goat's choice. That way, you'll get goat's milk and butter.
"I think this is still too tasty. How can the bread get bigger when you put in what Cyril said was yeast? Yeast is growing wheat."
"Exactly, you can't add more wheat. It's just that there's plenty of air in there, you see, so if you crunch the bread, there's plenty of gaps. It gets bigger and softer for that matter."
"It is. But it's a hassle to make yeast every time. It's been a week with cranberries on the water, right?
"That's right. However, if the temperature is low, the yeast won't activate, so I guess I'll have to be careful with the temperature as well. Not now, but especially in the winter."
"That's sad. In the winter, you won't be able to take the cranberries, and say goodbye to this soft bread..."
Lucier strokes the bread with regret.
"I'm not worried about that. Making yeast liquid doesn't have to happen. I'm going to make dried cranberries. Plus I don't have to make yeast liquid every time. You know what this is?
"You must be the bread before baking."
"Correct"
I smile at Lucier as she rolls a piece of bread I've left on the palm of my hand.
"Yeast lives in these little pieces. So the next time you make a loaf of bread, you add it up, and the bread will swell, just like it did earlier."
"Okay. Then the next time you make it, if you leave only a few pieces, you can eat much softer bread."
"Correct. Occasionally, yeast can do it to another fungus, but the basics are fine with this."
"But who asked you this?
"In my father's time as village chief, I followed him to the city. That's when I found out."
This is a lie.
Just a little further, it was only in the nineteenth century that the use of yeast became widespread when it was Earth. In this world with only about sixteenth-century civilization at best, it would still be an unknown technology.
And bread is not the only use of yeast.
"Oh well, I need to tell everyone about this. It's great to make a little bread with less wheat."
I round my eyes. I tried to ask Lucier to spread this way of making it to everyone in the village, but she told me herself before that.
Today, the bread I ate tastes better than usual.
Whispering, but that alone makes people feel happy.
Lucier suggests in good faith that, unlike me, he doesn't intend to, but wants everyone to enjoy this bread from the bottom of his heart.
"Oh, please. There are a few bottles with yeast liquid in them, so I want you to use them to spread the word."
"Yeah, let me handle it. Tomorrow I'll make it myself, and I'll tell everyone how Cyril found it."
Nothing. You don't have to give me my name.
"Yeah, no. I'm glad Cyril told me she was amazing."
Lucier's uncontrolled grin stirs her breasts. Being with Lucier makes me like her more and more limitless.
"Thank you. I'll do my best to keep Lucier from giving me my love."
"I'm not worried about that. Because I also know a lot of Cyril when I feel sorry for her. 'Cause I'm not gonna hate you anymore."
I couldn't bear to stroke Lucier's head hard.
"Have you been treating Cyril like a child lately about me?
"That's not true. That's all I can do for Lucier right now, so I'm just doing this, and I really want to do something more adult."
That's a real wish, but I'm dealing with Lucier with a certain amount of lines in me. I'm afraid the toothpick won't work anymore.
"An adult thing?
"Kisses, hugs, kids making"
Lucier turns bright red on his face and falls behind when he hears my words.
"Sih, Cyril"
Lucier raised her confused voice as she turned her eyes black and white.
"Is that weird? I think it's a natural reaction to want to do that with someone you like."
"You know, it's not weird, but when you say it so insignificantly, you're not ready for feelings!
"Isn't that usual? I say I like Lucier instead of saying hello."
"Well, the specifics are different again."
"Sorry, I didn't think Lucier would be so surprised. But after saving the village as promised, if Lucier would accept me, I'd do what I just said every day."
"Ugh, sloppy. Why do I have to be so thrilled all the time?"
"I'm thrilled, too. You have the courage to say such a shitty thing."
"Absolutely, it doesn't look like it"
"It's in front of Lucier, so I'm following you."
That's what I say and smile. Even I can illuminate and embarrass myself.
Quickly, I want to save the village crisis and hear back from the confession.
"Hey, Cyril. Really every day?"
"Oh, sure. So based on that, please respond to my confession."
Lunch time went by in a rush to say that.
I bite every second of this.
I'm sure I don't have much time left to stay like this.
Because this peace is the tranquility before the storm...
