Chapter 41: Fragile Balance
I had to agree with Grandfather.
Having an Astral Soul with the domain of Reality Manipulation sounded incredible on paper, but in practice, it was terrifyingly volatile. One stray thought or unfocused flicker of intent could theoretically alter local space-time or rewrite physical laws by accident. Learning to control it properly wasn’t optional, it was a necessity.
’Though, to be fair... it’s not like I’m actually in any real danger,’ I thought, leaning back against the plush velvet sofa. ’I’ve got you acting as my safety net.’
[Fufufu~ Look at you, finally acknowledging who really holds down the fort around here!] Paige’s smug, delighted voice echoed through my mind, practically preening with pride. [Don’t worry, Host! Even if you accidentally rewrite gravity and turn the sky into strawberry jelly, I’ll fix it before anyone notices.]
I hid a small smirk behind my teacup as Dad set his own down with a quiet clink. His expression grew solemn as he looked at me.
"Seth, your Astral Soul is one of the most absurdly powerful ones I have ever known," Dad said, his deep voice carrying unusual gravity. "But with that level of power comes immense risk. The world appears peaceful on the surface, yet that peace rests on an extremely fragile balance that no faction dares disrupt."
He paused, his sharp eyes narrowing slightly. "The supernatural world has seen countless catastrophic wars throughout history. Those bloody conflicts are why the ancient pantheons value peace today. But the last great war ended centuries ago. Memories fade, and tensions have been quietly building behind the scenes. No one wanted to be the first to pull the trigger... until now."
Alistair nodded gravely, resting both hands atop his silver-headed cane. "Julian is correct. The sheer scale of your awakening yesterday sent shockwaves through every higher realm. A power like yours, Seth, can upset this fragile balance simply by existing. Depending on the choices you make and how you wield your authority, you could either tear down the current order... or strengthen it beyond anything we’ve known."
Grandfather reached over and rested a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder. "You carry great responsibility now, my boy."
"Oh, stop it! I don’t like this at all!" Mom huffed, crossing her arms with an unhappy pout.
She shot Dad and Grandfather a glare before turning back to me with a protective pout. "I finally got my sweet boy back after twenty-one painful years! I just wanted him to rest, get pampered, and enjoy his new life of luxury. I don’t want him getting dragged into grand political schemes, faction wars, and some great responsibilities."
Seeing her become so genuinely upset over my well-being filled my chest with a quiet warmth. I leaned over and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into a side hug.
"Mom, I don’t really mind it," I said with a warm smile. "Taking responsibility isn’t new to me-I’ve been doing it my whole life anyway. Plus, I’m genuinely curious about how this wider world works."
I gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Besides, Grandfather said I could help strengthen the peace, right? If the world stays peaceful, we get to enjoy our quiet, luxurious life even more. And it’s not like I’m leaving you forever, we have decades, maybe even centuries ahead of us. I’m not going anywhere."
Mom looked at me, her protective frown slowly melting into a soft smile. She let out a quiet breath and rested her hand over mine. "I understand, darling. And I’m proud of you... I just want you to stay safe."
"You should be immensely proud, Alice," Alistair declared, his deep voice booming with pride. "Your son is clearly destined for greatness! And you shouldn’t worry about a single thing, the entire Rothschild Family stands firmly behind Seth. If any pantheon tries to pull anything, they’ll have to go through us first."
"Indeed," Dad added, offering Mom a reassuring look. "As long as Seth spends some time at Avalon mastering the fundamentals of his power and learning how to shield his soul, harming him will be practically impossible for almost anyone."
That finally seemed to reassure Mom. She looked at me, her eyes soft as she held my gaze. "Fine... but you keep your promise, Seth. Stay safe, understand?"
"I promise, Mom," I replied with a warm, genuine laugh. "I finally have a family that loves and cares about me. I’m definitely not planning on dying anytime soon."
Before the atmosphere in the grand hall could become any more emotional, I cleared my throat and changed the subject. "So... speaking of mastering my power, Grandfather... is there somewhere safe where I can actually test it out?"
A faint, knowing smile touched Dad’s lips as he stood, buttoning his suit jacket. "I’ve already prepared a specialized underground training facility beneath the estate. Your mother and I weren’t just tightening perimeter security last night, we also spent hours reinforcing the wards below."
I pushed myself up from the velvet sofa, stretching my arms with a confident grin. "Perfect. Let’s see what this Astral Soul can actually do."
...
The elevator carried us deep beneath the mansion, descending far below the subterranean gym wing and parking garages into a section of the estate hadn’t even known existed.
When the heavy metallic doors slid open, I felt like I had stepped out of a private residence and straight into another world.
The underground training grounds combined cutting-edge technology with intricate magical arrays I couldn’t even begin to comprehend. The ceiling stretched at least fifty feet overhead beneath vast lighting grids, while the floor opened into an immense, barren expanse that resembled a desolate wasteland. The walls were lined with reinforced obsidian-alloy plates that glowed faintly with protective wards.
Mom, Dad, Yerin, and Val remained near the secure observation deck by the entrance, giving us space while Grandfather walked with me into the center of the vast training floor.
"We’ve reinforced the containment wards to withstand high-tier, multi-conceptual impacts," Alistair said, leaning lightly on his cane as his sharp eyes swept across the empty arena. "Just in case your power decides to act up. Now then... let’s start with something small and simple."
