Chapter 169 - 114: Su Ran and Shan Weizi
Shan Weizi was, in fact, a very gentle and considerate woman.
"Su Ran, thank you for what you did just now."
"It was nothing. But, uh, can you not chase me with a sword anymore in the future? It honestly scares me a little."
"As long as you don’t make me angry, I won’t chase you with a sword."
"Deal."
"Mm."
The Su Embroidery screen cast a reflection of the scene behind it—a steamy room, and the silhouette of a woman in a hanfu standing by a wooden tub, massaging a man.
A moment later.
"Su Ran."
"What is it?"
"Tilt your head up."
Su Ran tilted his head up to look at Shan Weizi.
The next second, the screen reflected the young woman in the hanfu tying up her elegant hair.
"Thank you."
"..."
...
After his bath, Su Ran took his medicine and started to feel drowsy. He ended up falling asleep on Shan Weizi’s bed, since it was the only one with an electric blanket.
When he woke up, pale moonlight was streaming into the room. He checked the time—it was already past nine at night. Su Ran had to admit he was a good sleeper, especially in a woman’s bed, where it was even easier to fall into a deep slumber.
His stomach RUMBLE RUMBLE RUMBLING, Su Ran got dressed and left the bedroom to find the kitchen. When he walked out into the backyard, he saw her. There, directly ahead, under the full moon at the peak of a cliff, stood Shan Weizi, dressed in a pure white, ethereal hanfu.
A cold wind blew, gently rustling her snow-white robes.
A few soft strands of hair at her temples were tousled by the breeze, brushing against her fair face, but she didn’t seem to notice at all. She stood alone at the edge of the cliff as the mountain wind gradually picked up, causing her clothes to begin dancing in the air.
Su Ran leaned against a pillar not far behind her, watching this breathtakingly beautiful moment. ’Is she contemplating the meaning of life?’ he wondered.
"Hey," Su Ran called out after a moment.
Shan Weizi turned and smiled. "You’re awake?"
"I’ve been up for a bit. I saw you contemplating the meaning of life and didn’t want to disturb you."
"I wasn’t contemplating anything. I was just on my phone. The signal’s better here." Shan Weizi held up her phone.
PFFT~
Su Ran nearly choked.
Shan Weizi walked over. "What are you doing out here?"
"My stomach woke me up. I came out to find something to eat."
"I left some food for you in the kitchen. Come on."
Shan Weizi took Su Ran’s hand, and they ran down the long corridor, into the wind.
In the kitchen.
Shan Weizi pushed Su Ran into a seat at the dining table and then began busying herself with heating up the food. Watching the incredibly capable Shan Weizi, Su Ran felt a warmth spread through him. He couldn’t help but think that whoever married a woman like her—elegant and skilled, at home in both the drawing room and the kitchen, versed in both literature and martial arts—would be a very happy man.
The food on the mountain was relatively simple and light. There were vegetables grown by Liu Buqun, some wild greens, and matsutake mushrooms—a delicacy for city dwellers below, but abundant in these pristine mountains.
Su Ran had a great appetite and ate two bowls of rice. When Shan Weizi was about to wash the dishes, Su Ran stood up. "Let’s do it together. I can’t just eat and do nothing."
"Okay."
The two of them washed the dishes together by the stone basin, chatting playfully about sleeping arrangements.
"You should sleep in my room later. It has the electric blanket. I’ll sleep in the guest room."
"You should use the electric blanket. I’ll be fine in the guest room."
"Then I’ll get you an extra blanket later."
"Alright."
In the guest room.
Shan Weizi brought Su Ran an extra blanket, said goodnight, and returned to her room.
Having slept from the afternoon until nine o’clock, Su Ran was now wide awake in bed without a hint of sleepiness. He decided to read a novel on his phone to pass the time, but since he hadn’t charged it in the afternoon, the battery died after a short while. So, he got up and knocked on Liu Buqun’s door.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.
"Sect Leader Liu, are you asleep?"
"Just about to. What is it?"
"Can I borrow your phone charger..." Before he could finish the word "borrow," he heard a loud, shrill voice from inside announce an incoming call on Liu Buqun’s phone: "INCOMING CALL FROM 135-XXXX-4821. *I’M LOOKING UP, ABOVE THE MOON, HOW MANY DREAMS ARE FLYING FREELY...*" With a call announcement like that, it was definitely a senior’s phone.
"Su Ran, what did you need?"
"Nothing. Goodnight."
The backyard was Liu Buqun’s private residence, while the dormitories in the front courtyard were for the disciples. Su Ran didn’t bother going there and went straight to Shan Weizi’s door instead.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK~
"Weizi, are you asleep?"
"I just lay down. What’s wrong?"
"Can I borrow your phone charger for a bit?"
"Come in."
"Okay."
The moment Su Ran pushed the door open, Shan Weizi quickly pulled the blanket up to cover her long legs. At the same time, Su Ran felt like he saw something—not below, but above.
She was sleeping in a dudou.
Su Ran walked over and took the charger from Shan Weizi. "Thanks. ACHOO~" He rubbed his nose. "Uh... sorry."
"Wait... Don’t go yet. Turn around for a second."
"Okay."
Su Ran turned around. In the reflection from the lamplight, he could see Shan Weizi get out of bed behind him and put on a robe. "Okay, you can turn back now," Shan Weizi said, then went over to a cabinet to look for something.
Su Ran watched her. She was wearing a white nightgown; her figure was slender and her skin fair. Her small feet, especially, were simply perfect.
’If she didn’t care for him, Shan Weizi wouldn’t have traveled a thousand miles to ask her maternal grandfather for help for a blockhead like me.’
’If she didn’t care, why would she let a man she barely knows into her room so late at night?’
’If she didn’t care, why would she be willing to wash my clothes for me?’
Su Ran knew all of this, of course, but he didn’t know what to say.
Shan Weizi came back with some cold medicine. "I forgot to give you your medicine tonight. Take it now, or your cold will never get better." She poured a glass of water for Su Ran.
"By the way, are you still cold with two blankets?"
"No."
Shan Weizi looked at Su Ran’s purplish lips, a clear sign that he was lying. She pushed herself up, walked to the wardrobe, and took out a new pillow and blanket, placing them on the bed. She untied her hair, and with a shake of her head, her waterfall of long, silky hair cascaded down. Placing the hair tie on the nightstand, she didn’t take off her nightgown to sleep in just a dudou like before, but instead got under the covers still wearing it, settling on the far side of the bed. She then said slowly, "Finish your medicine and come to bed. We’ll each have our own blanket. My bed has an electric blanket, so you don’t freeze to death in the guest room."
