Chapter 148: I Really Wish This Life-Saving Grace Was Fake
When the staff member handed him the note, Jared Thorne was completely bewildered.
"Didn’t I tell you to turn Miss Morgan down?" ’Why is there a note?’
He muttered as he lowered his head to carefully examine the note’s contents.
The staff member seized the opportunity to relay Luna Morgan’s full message. "I don’t know what’s going on, but that Miss Morgan seems to really value this opportunity."
After reading the note, Jared Thorne was stunned for a moment. A hundred yuan for the copyright transfer, and she wasn’t even asking for credit? This was practically charity.
The key thing was, her song was actually good. That made it even stranger.
His movie wasn’t some big-budget production; it’s not like people were lining up to work with him.
The staff member said, "That Miss Morgan seemed really defiant. There isn’t something wrong with the song, is there?"
To put it bluntly, he’d never seen someone sell their own music so cheaply. He couldn’t help but feel that you get what you pay for.
"Don’t be ridiculous. I had someone evaluate this piece; it’s genuinely good. I quite like it, actually." Jared Thorne thought for a moment. "Maybe Miss Morgan has run into some trouble and desperately needs money, so she resorted to selling her song this way."
Otherwise, there was no reason for her to offer such an obviously unreasonable price.
"How about this? I’ll buy the song for the score. We can’t let her come all this way for nothing."
Besides, the new investor was very generous. The funding was more than enough for him to finish post-production and even hire a well-known musician for the movie’s OST.
For once, Jared Thorne decided to be generous. He waved his hand magnanimously. "Miss Lancaster is already helping follow up on the arrangement. Let’s have her help arrange this piece too."
The staff member hesitated. "And the price..."
"One hundred thousand," Jared Thorne said. In truth, that was the industry rate for a professional musician, which was still high for a newcomer.
But since she was in financial difficulty, it wouldn’t be right to lowball her.

After the plane landed, the moment Luna Morgan turned on her phone, it started buzzing and chiming nonstop.
"What is it?" Chloe Dave asked.
There were too many messages for Luna Morgan to read one by one, but she caught the main point. "The director agreed to use my song."
She pressed her lips together. "But he said he’ll give me a hundred thousand. I’m not doing this for the money, though. I’m doing it for Miss Lancaster..."
A thought struck Chloe Dave. "You were planning to give the song to Jane Lancaster for free?"
’So that’s why she said what she did earlier,’ he thought. It all made sense.
"I thought I was seeing things, but that really was Jane Lancaster’s back! She wants to claim your song as her own!"
"No, it’s not like that!" Luna Morgan quickly explained. "I wanted to do this myself. She doesn’t know I would."
Chloe Dave replied, "You’re still too naive. Jane Lancaster is a deep schemer. She must have calculated this all along."
Luna Morgan’s breath hitched. ’So the hundred thousand... was that Jane Lancaster’s offer, too?’
Snapping back to reality, she opened the digital contract sent by the staff member and, without a second glance, hastily signed it online.
"Actually, a hundred thousand for one song is a very fair price," she said, forcing a relaxed smile. "It’s even higher than I expected."
"That’s because you originally wanted to be credited and arrange it yourself. If you had really only asked for a hundred, they probably wouldn’t have dared to buy the song. Getting the full copyright and credit for a hundred thousand is already a huge bargain for them, you know?" Chloe Dave’s heart ached for her; she was still defending them, even now.
And then there was Jane Lancaster. She already had so much, yet she was never satisfied, always plundering what belonged to Luna Morgan.
’But can she really steal things like knowledge, talent, and skill?’
Chloe Dave looked up at Luna Morgan, a pang of pain in his heart. ’Although Jane Lancaster can’t steal those things, she can use her status as Luna’s savior to endlessly demand them from her.’
’Luna’s sense of morality is too strong. As long as she carries the weight of this life-saving debt, she will never be able to refuse Jane Lancaster’s demands.’
’This can’t go on. I really wish this whole ’life-saving grace’ thing was a lie.’
Recalling some recent rumors, Chloe Dave thought for a moment before deciding to call Vincent Holt.
He knew that Vincent Holt had recently joined an online group, seemingly an anti-fan group for Jane Lancaster. It was a gathering place for all the people online who couldn’t stand her.
Supposedly, their daily activities consisted of recruiting new members and collecting and exposing negative information about Jane Lancaster.
In the past, he might have offered a word of caution. After all, a group like that sounded like it had a strange agenda, and influenced by the group atmosphere, it would be easy to do something extreme.
But since the kidnapping incident, he had been gradually marginalized by Caleb Lowell.
Since that was the case, why should he meddle? So he chose to turn a blind eye to Vincent Holt’s activities.

After finishing her work, Jane Lancaster made another trip to Mama Knight’s hometown.
It was a remote place that required a flight, followed by a train, then a bus, then a local bus, and finally, a boat.
Mama Knight had left her hometown many years ago. Her parents had passed away early, and her brother and sister-in-law had followed their children to put down roots in the city. Her old family house had collapsed years ago and was leveled during a government initiative to clear hazardous buildings. Now, only a stretch of ruins remained.
"This place is lovely. The mountains are green, and the water is clear," Jane Lancaster said with a smile.
Mama Knight shook her head. "Miss, you just find everything novel."
Sometimes, she felt that Jane Lancaster was nothing like a young lady from a wealthy family. Though she had been pampered since childhood, never having to lift a finger, when she actually did get her hands dirty, Jane was remarkably neat and efficient.
Speaking of which, her young miss had always been a gentle and good child, and the degree of her independence often surprised her.
That night, the two of them stayed at a guesthouse in town. The gentle gurgling of water flowed all the way into their dreams.
The next day, after breakfast, Jane Lancaster took Mama Knight to the best real estate development in the county and bought a house.
It was a small villa with a little courtyard. The yard faced a lake and had space for a vegetable garden. The sales agent was gushing with praise.
Mama Knight didn’t quite understand why she was buying it. After all, compared to the Lancaster family’s grand mansion, it was a world apart.
"If I want to come visit in the future, it’ll be nice to have a place to stay," Jane Lancaster answered with a smile.
The villa in the small county was very affordable, and the money she had earned recently was more than enough to pay for it. "Don’t tell anyone else. Only you and I can know about this place, Mama Knight."
Mama Knight nodded solemnly.
She wasn’t getting senile. On this trip, she hadn’t seen the young miss use the young master’s supplementary card once.
In the past, no matter what the young miss bought, she always used the young master’s supplementary card.
But on the other hand, if she used the young master’s card, then everything the young miss did and everywhere she went could be tracked by him.
’So, on this trip, the young miss doesn’t want the young master to know, does she?’
After they bought the house and were preparing to head back, it was already getting late.
If they tried to make their connections now, they would face another rough journey.
At the bus station, Mama Knight made some inquiries and was nearly frantic. "Miss, school is about to start in a few days! It’s impossible to buy return tickets."
Not only were the bus tickets hard to get, but the plane tickets were sold out too! With all the transfers they had to make, it was even harder to buy tickets.
Mama Knight was terrified of delaying the young miss’s school registration—it was a very important event!
