Chapter 86: Then It’s Okay to Sow a Little Discord, Right?

Luna Morgan felt extremely awkward. Clayton Lowell had invited her to the banquet and prepared this dress for her, saying a designer had custom-made it just for her.

She hadn’t thought much of it at first, but once the dress was directly linked to a price tag of 1.59 million, she felt utterly mortified.

’What will people think of me? Especially Caleb Lowell... will he think I’m some vain, materialistic woman?’

’I never wanted to compete with Beverly Lynch, but now I’ve somehow come out on top, and I’m not happy about it at all.’

"Uncle Lowell, this dress is too expensive. I shouldn’t be wearing it. Could you please take me somewhere I can change out of it?"

Clayton Lowell’s heart tightened. He hadn’t yet explained the dress’s origins.

"Luna, wait a moment. This dress is actually a gift from the internationally renowned designer, Arthur. He said you are his muse..."

Luna Morgan nodded. "I understand. Thank you, and please thank him for me. But since I was responsible for damaging the dress, I will pay for it."

Clayton Lowell: "..."

’No, you don’t understand at all!’

Clayton Lowell was so furious he wanted to roar.

Arthur was a designer who exclusively created clothes for European Royalty. The formalwear he designed for their public appearances was coveted by countless people, which had made him incredibly famous.

But no matter how high his status, his clientele was exclusive, so he wasn’t exactly a household name.

Many people at the party heard him mention the name Arthur, but it didn’t register with them.

Without the doubt and the wager from Yvonne Jennings’s group, and without a few background voices providing commentary, it would look far too strange for him to go out of his way to explain who Arthur was.

’Sigh, this was supposed to be a classic "flex and humiliate" moment. But Beverly Lynch paid up too quickly, Yvonne Jennings didn’t get a chance to make her bet, and Luna Morgan isn’t playing along. A failed flex, I guess.’

’Then again, why would this Arthur guy know Luna Morgan? She doesn’t even know him.’

Pauline Shaw couldn’t help but glance over. ’That’s right, why *would* Arthur know Luna Morgan?’

She waited a few seconds, but hearing no follow-up, she was left feeling unsettled.

Beverly Lynch transferred the money to Clayton Lowell and was just about to turn and leave.

Clayton Lowell said, "Wait a minute. Why did you just accuse Luna of spreading rumors? She never makes things up. Since you’ve damaged her reputation, shouldn’t you apologize to her?"

’Today is the day I’m going to expose Beverly Lynch for finding a substitute for Caleb Lowell. Let’s see where she can hide her face then.’

"She *was* spreading rumors! She said Shawn Sutton looks like Young Master Lowell!" Yvonne Jennings blurted out, too quickly for Willow Summers to stop her.

Clayton Lowell gave Caleb Lowell a meaningful look. "Was she wrong?"

Caleb Lowell’s gaze fell upon Shawn Sutton, and his expression immediately darkened.

"She’s wrong. How does he look anything like me?" ’A pretty boy who sponges off a woman... on what grounds could anyone say he looks like me?’

Luna Morgan felt a bit awkward. She was the one who had brought up the topic, and she realized it had been inappropriate. "I’m sorry, I was mistaken."

"But there really is a resemblance, especially from the side. I’d say it’s about a sixty or seventy percent match," Clayton Lowell said, deliberately stirring the pot.

The onlookers also began to size up the two men, and their scrutinizing gazes made Shawn Sutton a bit flustered.

"You know, there is a bit of a resemblance."

"But his presence is worlds apart from Young Master Lowell’s."

"That’s right. Young Master Lowell took charge of the Lowell Family at such a young age. His background, his bearing, his abilities—they’re all incomparable."

"Could it be that Beverly Lynch still has feelings for Young Master Lowell?"

Beverly Lynch’s expression stiffened. She shouted furiously at the murmuring crowd, "Shut up! I dare you to say one more word!"

The crowd, intimidated by her threat, fell silent for a few moments.

Pauline Shaw, however, wasn’t afraid of her. She sneered, "You’re the one who did it, but you won’t let anyone talk about it? What a joke."

Beverly Lynch snarled, "Pauline Shaw, do you have a death wish?! Fine, I’ll make today the anniversary of your death!"

Caleb Lowell’s feelings were complicated. He knew Beverly Lynch had been attracted to him years ago, but to go so far as to find a substitute... ’Does that mean she’s still hung up on me?’

The whole situation was too absurd. He had been holding back all evening, but now he couldn’t resist the urge to teach her a lesson on behalf of Mr. Lynch.

"Wait a minute, isn’t there some misunderstanding here?" Jane Lancaster suddenly spoke up.

Clayton Lowell frowned. "What misunderstanding could there be?"

Jane Lancaster said, "I remember Luna’s exact words were that she thought Mr. Sutton’s side profile looked a bit like *Mr. Lowell*. She never specified Caleb Lowell."

She sized up Clayton Lowell. "And now that I think about it, I feel like he actually looks more like you, Uncle Lowell."

Clayton Lowell’s face immediately fell, and his voice rose. "...Are you saying a lowlife like that looks like me?"

The contempt for Shawn Sutton in his tone was obvious.

Jane Lancaster looked astonished. "Uncle Lowell, why are you raising your voice? What’s so wrong with him looking like you? Surely there’s no need to belittle someone like that."

Clayton Lowell had always prided himself on being ’old money.’ Arrogant to the bone, he looked down on the ’nouveau riche’ who lacked a deep-rooted heritage.

Of course, in his eyes, even a family like the Lancasters wasn’t much different from the nouveau riche.

He usually concealed his arrogance behind a gentlemanly facade, and his witty, humorous style made him very popular in social circles.

Even though he wasn’t involved in business, many people were still eager to befriend him.

Many socialites and wealthy ladies were fond of his little tricks for charming people, finding him mature and charismatic.

But now that his vicious true colors were exposed, many people couldn’t help but feel deeply disappointed.

With that sinister expression on his face, where was even a hint of his usual suave demeanor?

Beverly Lynch said, "Uncle Lowell, he’s not just my boyfriend; he’s also your guest. Is this any way for you to treat a guest?"

Clayton Lowell inwardly cursed his slip of the tongue, but he couldn’t bring himself to apologize to Shawn Sutton.

Jane Lancaster sighed. "A moment ago, you said Mr. Sutton looks like Zion, and Zion didn’t get angry. Now I say he looks like you, and you get angry and call the man a ’lowlife.’"

"So, this ’lowlife’ is allowed to look like Zion, but he’s not allowed to look like you. Is that it?"

’You two are supposed to be such a close uncle and nephew, right? So it shouldn’t matter if I sow a little discord between you, should it?’

Clayton Lowell was about to go mad with anger. "...Jane Lancaster, you know perfectly well that’s not what I meant!"

"That’s enough, Uncle. Stop talking," Caleb Lowell said, pressing the bridge of his nose.

Of course, he wasn’t going to turn against Clayton Lowell just because of a few words from Jane Lancaster.

Still, Clayton Lowell’s subconscious reaction had left him feeling somewhat uncomfortable.

Clayton Lowell forced a smile. "Jane, you’ve misunderstood your uncle. But regardless of who looks like whom, it’s all a matter of subjective opinion. You shouldn’t worry about it too much. After all, some things are best left in the past."

Many people immediately scented gossip in the air. It felt like there was a hidden meaning behind Clayton Lowell’s words!

So, was it actually Jane Lancaster who was bothered by the fact that Shawn Sutton looked like Caleb Lowell?

In that case, her sudden intervention seemed very suspicious.

Back in the day, there had actually been rumors about a marriage alliance between the Lynch and Lowell families.

But soon after, Caleb Lowell had personally visited the Lancaster Family with gifts, asking Timothy Lancaster for permission for his daughter to be with him, which shattered the rumors of a Lowell-Lynch marriage alliance.

The Lynch Family had also actively come forward to deny the matter, even generously congratulating Timothy Lancaster on gaining such a fine son-in-law. After that, no one believed the marriage alliance rumors anymore.

Now, as many people recalled those past events, their expressions changed. It seemed there was no smoke without fire; there was something suspicious about this whole affair after all!
