Everyone Can Hear My Thoughts, and Now They're Panicking

Chapter 146: How Fortunate to Be Favored by Her Again and Again

By the next afternoon, all the investigation files had been delivered to Jasper Sterling’s desk.

Because the whole affair had played out in such a farcical and bungled manner, many people would subconsciously underestimate the kidnappers, overlooking the real danger they posed.

It was true they weren’t very smart, but it was also true they were inhumane.

Years ago, they had been sent to prison by Wendy Yates for bullying a classmate and causing permanent injury.

Now that they were out of prison, they had no intention of walking the straight and narrow, only engaging in shady dealings.

Unfortunately, not only did they fail to make any big money, but they also found themselves struggling more and more to make ends meet... and that’s when they saw news about Caleb Lowell.

They had met Wendy Yates’s son back then. ’Didn’t you lecture us about being good people? Now your son is so rich, he should help us out.’

But they couldn’t get close to Caleb Lowell, so they had to target the people around him.

He wasn’t surprised at all that Luna Morgan had been targeted. If she’d had a stronger sense of boundaries and hadn’t moved into that large apartment, this whole incident would never have happened.

If Yara Yates were to visit that residential complex, she would probably recognize it as her sister’s former home.

Years ago, Wendy Yates had sold the apartment to support her husband’s career. Now, so many years after her death, her son had bought it back.

Using it as a love nest to keep a beautiful, delicate woman—how could that not make people’s minds wander?

Besides, Luna Morgan and Caleb Lowell had been entangled for three years, and they were often seen coming and going together.

Caleb Lowell might have claimed to despise her, but he was incredibly possessive and wouldn’t allow anyone else to bully Luna Morgan.

These men approached Luna Morgan in disguise, putting on a pitiful act about being ostracized after getting out of prison, unable to find work, and having nothing to eat. Luna Morgan immediately gave them ten thousand.

The group was stunned. They had done their research; Luna Morgan’s family background was even worse than theirs.

They were so jealous their eyes turned red. ’She’s that rich, yet she gives us ten thousand like we’re some beggars she’s trying to get rid of?’

After a quick discussion, they decided to take a huge risk and go for a big score.

"They asked Luna Morgan the price of a Black Swan cake, and she said it was around a hundred thousand. That really set them off."

Gavin finally understood. "So, Miss Lancaster mentioned the Black Swan cake on purpose to provoke them, didn’t she?"

Black Swan cakes were indeed expensive, with some costing hundreds of thousands or even millions.

But those weren’t sold in stores. They were custom orders, much larger than regular cakes and made with exorbitant ingredients, so of course the price was staggering.

In reality, the main cakes sold in the shop only cost a few thousand, not so expensive that an ordinary person couldn’t afford one at all.

Who knows how Luna Morgan came up with a figure like a hundred thousand. Was the cake made of gold?

"Could Luna Morgan have done it on purpose?" Gavin couldn’t help but be suspicious. It was all too coincidental.

Jasper Sterling said, "No."

Luna Morgan’s kindness wasn’t an act. No matter what, she would never bring danger upon Jane Lancaster. That wouldn’t fit her persona of someone who repays her debts of gratitude.

But he also realized that this Miss Morgan was perhaps not the brightest. She seemed to enjoy setting herself up for scenarios where her kindness would be betrayed.

At the time, she was probably still hurt, believing Jane Lancaster had finally shown her true colors and was deliberately making things difficult for her.

And if Jane was trying to make things difficult, then the Black Swan cake must be incredibly expensive—so expensive that she couldn’t afford it and would be criticized for being extravagant and wasteful.

Jane Lancaster had probably calculated even this part of the equation.

Luna Morgan would have inevitably received a severe beating, but the kidnappers were tempted by a bigger prize. They had no time to vent their anger and left in a hurry, barely touching her.

"How fortunate," Jasper Sterling said with a smile. "To be repeatedly blessed by her favor."

Sometimes, he couldn’t help but feel a twisted jealousy for that kind of luck.

Luna Morgan also felt she was very lucky.

Although she had been inexplicably caught up in a terrifying kidnapping, she was fortunate that the kidnappers saw no profit in her and gave up halfway through.

She and Chloe Dave had only suffered a little, which was nothing compared to what could have happened.

Luna Morgan had decided right then not to call the police, and she begged Chloe Dave not to report it either.

"You said you knew one of them?" Chloe Dave asked curiously from her hospital bed, sipping the chicken soup Luna Morgan had brought.

"Yes, they must have gotten out of prison recently. They were young and foolish back then, got into some trouble, and went to jail. Now that they’re finally out, they’re hitting a wall everywhere they look for a job because of their criminal records."

Luna Morgan explained how she had run into the one called Scorpion at the restaurant that day.

Chloe Dave said, "I get it. It’s because you helped that Scorpion guy that they let us off the hook."

She had been prepared for the worst and never imagined the criminals would suddenly have a change of heart and give up.

If that was the case, then everything made sense.

Luna Morgan lowered her gaze and said softly, "When I helped them, I was just hoping society could be a little more forgiving and accept them back. I wasn’t thinking about anything else. I didn’t expect him to remember and plead for us."

"Since they still have some good left in their hearts, I can’t be merciless. I hope you can understand."

Chloe Dave was touched. "Of course I understand. I won’t betray your good intentions."

Luna Morgan bit her lower lip gently. "Actually, I have a selfish reason, too. I don’t want Mr. Lowell to think I’m staging things again."

"Zion was just angry. That’s why he said that. Don’t overthink it," Chloe Dave consoled her.

After she got out yesterday, she tried calling Caleb Lowell to explain the situation, but he cut her off, saying, "I don’t want to hear it."

The Dave family’s parents weren’t in the country at the moment, and she hadn’t dared to tell her family that she was injured.

If her parents found out, they would inevitably take their anger out on Luna Morgan, blaming her for getting their own daughter involved.

She didn’t know who had been stirring up trouble, but they actually thought Luna Morgan was promiscuous and had even warned her not to be led astray.

Chloe Dave had found it absurd at the time. Luna Morgan was so innocent and kind...

’The one who would stoop to ruining a woman’s reputation like this is most likely another woman.’

A thought suddenly struck her. She recalled the fiasco from the other day and felt as if an invisible hand was pushing these misunderstandings to occur.

’If that’s true, then this is all too terrifying.’

’The other person’s goal, without a doubt, is to destroy Luna Morgan, to make everyone suspect she’s staging these incidents so that she’ll eventually be despised and abandoned.’

She didn’t even have to think to guess who was behind it.

Chloe Dave finished the chicken soup, thinking to herself that she had to investigate this matter as soon as possible. She couldn’t let Luna Morgan be unjustly wronged.

Julian Lancaster’s plan for his two younger brothers to take Jane Lancaster on a trip to relax never came to fruition.

Because Adrian Lancaster had fallen ill.

In order to fit his character’s image, he had been dieting for a long time and was already somewhat malnourished. Add to that pulling all-nighters to rush filming and being overworked, and then finally getting a severe beating from the thugs...

He had successfully landed himself in the hospital.

"I’m sorry, I can’t go with you to help our sister relax." Lying in the hospital bed, a pale-faced Adrian Lancaster wore a hospital gown. "You guys can just leave me here. I’ll have my assistant come take care of me."

Alvin Lancaster disagreed. "How could we do that? You’re in this state. How could I possibly rest easy?"

"But what about taking our sister out to relax?"

Alvin Lancaster hesitated for a moment, then turned to look at Jane Lancaster.

’What are you looking at me for? Look at the one who created the problem.’

’He’s obviously using his sickness to vie for attention, and now he’s trying to guilt-trip me.’
