Chapter 494: Breaking the Limits of Mortality
*1800 Years Before the Millennial War, Between the Worlds*
"Who are you?" asked Diavolo, his thought vibrating in the silence of the void.
The silhouette slowly straightened up.
"I am the one who has protected you since your birth, even though you spent your time doing unprofitable things like dying for your wife," replied the entity in a voice that resonated like a distant thunder rumble... "I am the Thirteenth Constellation: Antichrist."
Diavolo remained frozen, trying to analyze this name: "Constellation? What does that mean?"
The Antichrist approached the fire, the gray flames casting moving shadows on what seemed to be a faceless black plate armor.
"The cosmos is governed by very complex laws, Diavolo," began the entity while crossing its arms. "There exist twelve thrones above the firmament, the twelve original Constellations: Leo, Aries, Taurus and the others... They are the supreme leaders who dictate the life of all beings. They are the ones who turned your world into an experimentation field after your world war."
The entity made a gesture toward the void to illustrate its words. "At the bottom of the ladder, there are the mortals, ants who bustle about in the hope of an illusory survival. And when mortals die, their souls do not simply disappear... They are recycled. They transform either into angelic creatures or into demons, according to the karma of their past life. They are the direct underlings of the Constellations, tools meant to fuel an eternal war for the simple entertainment of their masters."
Diavolo listened with a fascination mixed with horror... Everything he had taken for biological mutations was in reality only a cosmic restructuring orchestrated by capricious gods. He remembered Norah, her tears of blood and the hologram that controlled her.
"Why are you telling me all this?" asked Diavolo, his natural mistrust taking over.
Instead of answering directly, the Antichrist stared at Diavolo’s soul with invisible but burning eyes full of pragmatism.
"Do you want to save your wife?"
"Of course I do!" exclaimed Diavolo. "But why has a Constellation set its sights on her? She was just a simple human!"
"The world is much more complex than you believe," retorted the Antichrist with contempt for the scientist’s innocence. "The Constellations are powerful, but they are subject to taboos. They cannot intervene directly in the world of mortals without risking destabilizing the laws of balance. To bypass this, they create Systems. In summary, your wife has simply become the puppet of the Taurus Constellation. Her body is now only an interface, a battery to allow the King of Spirits to manifest his will on earth."
Diavolo felt a cold rage invade him... ’Using Norah as a puppet... They will pay.’
"I see..." he murmured at last. "So, what can I do?"
"I can free her," announced the Antichrist, "but on three conditions..."
Diavolo tensed up. He knew the price of knowledge, and he suspected that the price of salvation would be even more exorbitant. "Three? You want me to become your puppet, is that it? One system against another?"
The Antichrist let out a short and cynical laugh. "No, your body is far too weak to contain my essence without disintegrating instantly... What I want is for you to kill the Lion Constellation."
Diavolo widened his eyes. "What!? I can’t even beat my wife under Taurus’s influence... How am I supposed to kill a Constellation, a being that rules the cosmos?"
"I will prepare you for that," replied the entity calmly. "You did not suddenly come up with the idea of the Mystic Arts through pure genius, Diavolo. It was me who instilled them in you since your awakening in this world... It was me who guided your research on aura manipulation. So just pay attention and stop doubting your own destiny."
"And the two other conditions?" asked the scientist, seeking to know the extent of his debt.
"Complete the first one first... I will judge if you have the potential for the rest once Leo’s blood has stained your hands."
Diavolo remained silent... He did not know why this renegade Constellation was doing all this. He was not fooled: he was sure that the Antichrist had nothing good and that, like Taurus, it was using its own schemes to achieve an unknown goal. But if it could give him a chance to see Norah free, he no longer had much choice. He accepted the pact.
...
It was difficult to measure time in this environment that was neither paradise nor hell. In this gray void, seconds could last centuries. Time passed and Diavolo learned many more Mystic Arts, experimenting with complex Mudras that allowed him to twist the flows of demonic and arcane mana... The Antichrist proved to be a ruthless teacher, demanding surgical precision in every movement of energy.
The Thirteenth Constellation also taught him versatile knowledge that had no direct relation to combat: the manipulation of masses, strategy, psychology and the art of controlling the flow of time to deceive his enemies... Diavolo Star Giovanna the scientist was dying, giving way to a new entity, a being capable of navigating between the lies of the gods: The Wizard of the Constellation, Konstantine.
And after what seemed like an eternity of mental and spiritual forging, the Antichrist stopped in front of the gray fire, which had become immense under the influence of Diavolo’s power.
"I think you are ready..." decreed the entity in a tone devoid of emotion. "I will teleport you directly into his domain... Remember: kill him at all costs. Leave no room for pity."
Diavolo raised his eyes toward the night sky that began to materialize above him. His physical transformation was total. He now had long blond hair, a pale gold that recalled the stars. His eyes had become heterochromatic: one an abyssal black, representing his link with the Void, and the other a dazzling golden, inherited from his mastery of the Mystic Arts... On his now athletic body, molded in a light dark armor, star-shaped runes pulsed with a silvery glow.
He smoothed his hair back with a slow gesture.
"Good... Let’s go..." murmured Diavolo.
A fissure of white light tore open in front of him, sucking his being toward Leo’s domain.
