Chapter 525: Nothing can soothe a woman in love
After Ariana Hornraven’s return into the body she had meticulously prepared over many long years, she found herself plunged into an absolute silence. This body, shaped at the cost of countless sacrifices and a patience nearly inhuman, was finally ready to receive her. She opened her eyes and let her gaze wander around her. The stone walls oozing with moisture, the torches whose flames flickered in the drafts, the experimental instruments arranged on the granite tables: everything had remained in its state, intact, as if time had frozen in this room. She remembered every detail, every gesture performed here. The memories of Lucifer remained engraved in her mind.
Without wasting a moment, she resumed her experiments where she had left them off. Day after day, year after year, she subjected herself to a relentless routine, convinced that Lucifer would eventually be reborn. She knew, with an unshakable certainty, that he would return one day; she possessed his past memories, and this knowledge conferred upon her a tranquil assurance that sustained her in moments of doubt. She ceaselessly checked every signal, every anomaly, every birth that might betray a reincarnation. But no correspondence came to validate her hopes. The years passed, monotonous and vain, and the long-awaited answer did not manifest itself.
Fortified by the considerable resources that Spectrum offered her, she undertook to expand her field of operation. She extended her research far beyond the usual borders, all the way to the most remote lands and the territories that no one dared to explore. Messengers departed in great numbers, traveling the dusty roads and lost trails; networks of informants stretched over hundreds of leagues, connecting isolated villages to great cities. Yet no new clue came to disturb this stubborn void. Reports poured in, rumors circulated, but nothing, absolutely nothing, matched the criteria she had established with scientific rigor.
During this long wait, she committed numerous acts that her conscience condemned. Unexplained disappearances, genetic manipulations on living subjects, secret rituals celebrated in the basements of her laboratories: all of this accumulated into a dark litany. She could not, however, claim authorship of these crimes, for the Antichrist controlled each of her gestures. Her soul, prisoner within this body she had nonetheless chosen, had no power over her own actions. She watched, powerless, as this plan, whose mechanisms she did not master, was set in motion. Despite this alienation, she continued, year after year, to search for Lucifer with an obstinacy that bordered on madness.
After what seemed to her an eternity, information finally reached her. A woman named Alicia Draken had just attracted the attention of her spies. Ariana was not one hundred percent certain, but she remembered precisely that, in the past, Lucifer’s mother bore this name. This coincidence seemed too significant to be ignored. She therefore decided to keep a constant eye on this woman, without revealing her interest. She sent discreet men, chosen for their discretion and loyalty, tasked with watching her from a distance. For long months, she waited, observing Alicia’s every move, watching for the slightest sign that might confirm or disprove her suspicions.
Time passed again, slow and heavy. Alicia Draken gave birth to a son, and Ariana stood ready, her senses alert. She watched the child grow, following his development with the attention of an anxious mother. She waited for the moment when memories might resurface, when a gleam of recognition would cross the boy’s gaze. But disappointment struck her with the violence of a dagger blow: the child showed no sign of memory, no spark of consciousness that might have betrayed Lucifer’s presence. He was nothing but an ordinary child.
Then came Kaiser’s turn. As soon as she laid eyes on him, Ariana believed it with all her might, with desperate fervor. She examined the young man from every angle: his slender silhouette, the way he walked with a confident step, the amber color of his eyes where a familiar spark seemed to gleam. Every detail appeared to match what she was waiting for. She even agreed to become engaged to him, sacrificing her hesitations on the altar of her hope. She told herself that this time, it was him, that patience was finally paying off. She prepared sumptuous festivities where guests mingled in a hushed atmosphere, exchanges of gifts where each object was chosen with care, one-on-one conversations where she desperately sought to rekindle a spark that would not come. But deep down, a persistent voice whispered to her that this was merely a deception.
Inside the silent residence, however, Ariana’s disappointment only grew, insidiously, with each passing day. Kaiser showed no sign of recognition toward her; his eyes, when they met hers, remained empty of that ancient gleam she had so hoped to find there. His behavior, in truth, contrasted strikingly with that of Lucifer. The latter, in her memories, was far more intense, more direct, and his actions still bore the stigmata of the ordeals he had endured over the centuries. Kaiser, by contrast, displayed a lightness and carelessness that were entirely foreign to her.
What Ariana did not know, however, was that Kaiser was truly Lucifer, but in a state of complete amnesia. He had not yet recovered the slightest shred of his former memories. The Kaiser she observed every day was none other than the reincarnation of Lucifer, the very one who had once walked the streets of Manhattan and who, by some mysterious design, had ended up transmigrating into this contemporary era. Consequently, his current attitude found a perfectly coherent explanation. Since he remembered nothing, he behaved in every respect like a man of this time, wholeheartedly adopting its habits, its codes, and its immediate pleasures.
The months passed, slow and monotonous, while Ariana continued to observe him from a distance, watching for the slightest clue that might confirm her suspicions. Then, little by little, the truth finally emerged, clear and implacable. She understood at last that Kaiser was none other than Lucifer, that this soul she had so long sought indeed inhabited this body she saw moving before her eyes. Yet the joy she had imagined feeling never came. In its place, a dull and tenacious anger settled within her, gnawing at her thoughts and darkening her gaze.
Indeed, Kaiser now spent most of his time taking pleasure with other women, displaying a nonchalance that had become unbearable to her. She, Ariana, had waited for long years, enduring the wear of time and uncertainty. She had consented to sacrifice her own life, had meticulously prepared a body to welcome his return, had endured the oppressive control of the Antichrist, and had thrown herself into relentless research to find him. And now that he was here, he smiled at others, dispensing his favors with a generosity that wounded her to the very core.
Her jealousy, fueled by this daily spectacle, became so powerful that she could no longer contain it. She then made a radical decision: she attacked Paragon County, hoping to strike Kaiser in his flesh and make him pay for his indifference. Deep down, however, she knew that this was not truly what she desired. What she really wanted was simply to see him, hear his voice, share his existence, and finally live that life she had so often imagined by his side. Her aggressive act was, in the end, only a desperate cry, a clumsy attempt to break through the wall of indifference he had erected between them.
His heart bled with every smile he offered to another, with every glance he never cast her way. She would have given anything to be the one at his side, to dance with him beneath the scarlet moons, to face cosmic storms hand in hand. Lucifer, her one and only obsession. She wanted to live their most beautiful story, one that would make even the legends themselves grow pale.
But seeing those women swirl around him, brush against his arm, gather his rare smiles, was like a blade twisting in her chest with every beat. Her jealousy consumed her, burned her from within, reduced her to ashes. She knew her attack on the Paragon county was unreasonable, almost senseless. But she needed to reach him, if only through anger, through violence. If she could not have his love, she would have his fury. At least, he would look at her.
Yet a much deeper unease was beginning to gnaw at her mind, darker still than her jealousy. She had felt the threads of destiny stir, perceived a shiver in the order of things. The 13th Constellation, that abyssal entity born of primordial chaos, was resuming its machinations. She had seen it in the interlacing of stars, in the whispers of darkness: it wanted once more to force the gates of the Abyss and Paradise. Its goal? To plunge the entire universe into endless chaos, to collapse the barriers that separated the worlds.
And what terrified her most was that Lucifer did not seem to realize it. He was too absorbed in his games, his conquests, his indifference. She saw the shadow grow, felt the icy breath of the 13th Constellation brush against the confines of reality, and she knew that if she did not act, everything she loved, including him, would be swallowed whole. How could she make him understand that beyond her amorous torments, a far greater storm was rising? That her broken heart was nothing compared to the abyss opening wide.
