Chapter 536: For you
The atmosphere suddenly became unbreathable. Klein, whose icy eyes gleamed with an otherworldly light, raised his katana as he murmured:
The next moment, an absolute silence fell over the battlefield, as if the world were holding its breath. This prelude of calm was brutally interrupted by a sinister cracking sound that tore through reality, causing a violent torsion of the surrounding space. A yawning chasm, blacker than the absence of light, then opened beneath Klein and Aeshma’s feet, swallowing them into a spatiotemporal vortex. They were hurled into an isolated dimension, an infinite void where the laws of time and matter lost all hold, giving way to an absolute nothingness.
In this now sovereign domain, Klein ceased to restrain the power slumbering within him. He let his body undergo a radical metamorphosis, an evolution that defied the limits of his fleshly vessel. His skin became covered with a layer of of unparalleled density. At the same time, his silver hair stretched into a floating cascade, moving to the rhythm of the void’s invisible currents. His power then became dizzying, emitting an unbearable pressure that made the very foundations of this new world vibrate. He was no longer a simple warrior; he was touching the absolute transcendence of Genesis, an elevation that placed him on the threshold of divinity.
For her part, Aeshma had not remained inactive. Her Pandora body, exuding an aura of death and brimstone, stood against this display of power. She raised her clawed hands toward the dark sky of this domain, her fingers tracing summoning symbols in the rarefied air.
"Do you really think this space will save you, mortal?" sneered the Antichrist, her voice laden with contempt.
With a brusque gesture, she summoned a horde of Homunculi. These misshapen creatures, born of shadow and artificial flesh, materialized by the dozens, their disproportionate limbs thrashing with bestial fury. Their jaws dripping with bile clacked in cadence, while their yellow eyes, devoid of reason, fixed on their prey with morbid avidity.
Klein did not flinch before this tide of monsters. He fixed the horde with a single gaze, channeling his will into his to analyze every movement, every potential weakness. The world seemed to freeze around him. A flash of white light then split the darkness, tracing a perfect trajectory through this chaos. In a fraction of a second, he moved with such speed that sound could not even follow his course. A mere blink later, the Homunculi were nothing more than piles of inert flesh, sliced with surgical precision before they could take a single step. Their bodies collapsed into a rain of ashes and debris, carried away by the nonexistent wind of this forgotten dimension.
The battle then engaged directly against Aeshma, and from the first seconds, it was evident that this confrontation would reach a degree of violence rarely observed. Each blow struck by one or the other shook the very foundations of the dimension in which they stood, causing luminous tears in the surrounding spatial fabric. Klein quickly gained the upper hand, his mastery of combat far surpassing that of his adversary. His katana cleaved the air tracing trajectories so complex and so rapid that they defied all human perception, each movement flowing into the next with implacable logic.
He then used , creating a sudden pull of force that completely unbalanced Aeshma and broke her guard. Taking advantage of this opening, he followed up with a series of devastating strikes whose cadence left her no respite. The blades of his katana slashed through her dark robe, tearing away shreds that floated in the void, and cut deeply into her pale skin, releasing a blackish fluid that seemed to burn upon contact with the air.
Aeshma roared with rage, a guttural sound that resonated like a funereal echo throughout the dimension. She then attempted to reverse the situation by manipulating the gravitational fields around her, hoping to crush her assailant under an unbearable weight. But Klein had anticipated this maneuver, for he systematically responded with an perfectly synchronized with his adversary’s attempts. The two opposing forces annihilated each other, producing residual shockwaves that swept through the void around them, raising particles of pure energy and creating visual disturbances in the distorted space.
"Die... die!" screamed the Princess of Death, her amber eyes now bloodshot, while a dark foam beaded at the corners of her lips tightened by pain and anger.
They crashed against each other without the slightest restraint, their bodies becoming total weapons in this deadly dance. Klein cleanly severed Aeshma’s right arm with a circular motion, and the severed limb fell into the void before disintegrating into a shadowy dust. However, the Princess’s regeneration was almost instantaneous, as a new arm emerged from her wound in a few seconds, identical to the previous one. She then tried to drive her sharp claws into Klein’s flank, but he dodged with disconcerting agility, shifting with a simple movement of his hips. He immediately responded with a powerful kick to her chest, and the impact was so violent that it shattered several of her ribs, which emitted a sinister crack that resonated in the silence of the dimension.
She screamed in pain and humiliation, then summoned shadow lances that burst from the ground around her, their sharp points aimed at her enemy. But Klein shattered each of them with a simple gesture of his free hand, dissipating them. Without losing a moment, he closed the distance and struck her with a pommel blow square to the jaw, breaking several teeth and snapping her head back with a violence that sent a spurt of black blood flying. Space itself twisted under the unimaginable violence of their exchanges, creating dimensional rifts that opened and closed with their impacts, as if the universe were trying to protect itself from their destructive fury.
Klein advanced inexorably. Aeshma, despite all her Antichrist power, retreated. Her attacks lost precision. Her breathing became irregular. She felt, for the first time in centuries, the possibility of defeat.
Then Klein gathered all that remained in him. The sword emitted a light that solidified above his head. The energy of the three essences converged into a single point. An attack capable of annihilating all life in its path. A technique that could have erased an entire constellation. The void around them contracted, sucked in by the singularity he was creating.
He struck, but at the exact moment the blade descended, his heart faltered. An atrocious pain pierced his chest. His breath broke short. He concealed the blood rising in his throat, pressing with trembling fingers the place where something was cracking inside.
The attack deviated. It grazed the void without striking Aeshma fully, leaving only a trail of destruction that erased a portion of the dimension. Klein staggered.
Suddenly, from the silhouette of Aeshma of Pandora, a black and icy aura rose with redoubled force. The Antichrist, sensing weakness, attempted to regain total control. But something also broke on her side. The entity that had possessed Aeshma wavered.
Klein collapsed, his knees striking a ground that did not truly exist. His body grew heavy, his eyes, already vague, lost their luster.
Aeshma, who had suddenly regained consciousness, fell to her knees beside him. Fury had left her face, replaced by abject horror. She supported him with her trembling arms, her hands stained with the blood of the one she had just struck. Searing sobs shook her shoulders, and her voice broke in the deadly silence of the eclipse.
"I’m sorry... I didn’t mean to... please, stay with me..." she murmured, tears flowing endlessly down her pallid cheeks.
Klein, with a superhuman effort, raised a hand whose fingers were already cold. He placed it delicately on the hand of the young woman who held him against her. His touch was light, almost ethereal.
"It is I... who am sorry..." he articulated in a breath so faint it seemed to come from beyond the grave.
A final flash of lucidity crossed his gaze. He raised his eyes to her, a gleam of desperate hope shining amidst the suffering. He drew upon what little will remained to pronounce his ultimate vow, in a voice barely audible but etched with unshakeable firmness:
"I will save you... whatever it takes..." Klein murmured as the last of his strength left him.
He wanted to erase all the betrayals of the past, the manipulations he had orchestrated as Predator, and the lives he had shattered to get here. He sought, in this final heartbeat, to redeem the soul of the Usurper so that only the man he wished he had been would remain behind. But the weight of his deeds and the fatigue of his soul proved too strong. His eyelids slowly lowered, his last breath evaporated into the void, and he gave up his spirit, leaving Aeshma alone in the growing darkness of his domain, which was already beginning to dissipate.
