Chapter 515: close the gates of the Abyss

The rift contracted one last time, like a living organ, before opening wide in a violent spasm. The air itself seemed to tear, and a deep, low sound emanated from the darkness, a rumble that had nothing human about it, a noise of moving stones and liquefied flesh.

Konstantin did not have time to complete the last rune. The horde that surged forth was no longer a wave: it was a tidal wave.

Hundreds of demons, with varied and nightmarish forms. Twisted bodies, limbs too long, gaping maws bristling with fangs, skins sometimes glistening like molten metal, sometimes bristling with sharp spikes. And among them, faceless creatures, bodies of ash and smoke that materialized and dematerialized, their slender fingers seeking to touch them, to drain them of their essence.

Loriel threw herself into the fray, her spear tracing furrows of silvery light. A demon dove at her, its claws open to crush her torso. Loriel jumped, planted a foot on the monster’s chest, and thrust her spear downward. The tip pierced the joint between the skull and the thorax, and she pulled with a sharp movement, opening the creature like an overripe fruit. A geyser of viscous matter spurted out, but Loriel was already elsewhere.

Another demon attacked from the left, its claws slicing the air with a whistle. She parried with a backhand of her spear, the metal singing against the hardened flesh, and followed with a full rotation. The shaft of her spear struck the demon’s skull, unbalancing it, and the tip sank into its eye, rising up to the brain. The body collapsed, convulsing.

But there were too many of them. Loriel retreated, striking again and again, each movement a twist, each blow an amputation. Her spear danced, but she knew that this dance could not last forever. A demon emerged from behind a pile of corpses, three heads, fangs dripping with venom. She planted her spear in the ground and used it as a pivot to thrust both legs forward. Her boots hit the monster’s central head, exploding it in a spray of black brains and broken bones. The creature staggered, and Loriel retrieved her spear to finish off the two remaining heads.

Konstantin, who had lost his sword, fought with his bare hands, his fists wrapped in flames. A fist in a demon’s belly: the body emptied of its blood, its veins bursting like tubes under pressure. Another fist on another’s skull: the flesh melted, bubbling. But they kept coming.

Konstantin let out a curse and picked up a fallen sword, a crude weapon that a demon had abandoned. He did not even take the time to examine it. He brandished it, and a discharge of bluish magic ran through the blade, making it vibrate with a pale light.

Loriel continued to wield her spear, yet she did not slow down. A slashing motion, and three demon heads rolled to the ground. A thrusting motion, and a demon collapsed, a clean smoking hole in its torso. Then a shadow spread over her, a massive shadow.

A Prime-Demon emerged from the rift. It was twice as large as the others, its body covered in an obsidian carapace streaked with glowing red fissures. Its arms were blades, not claws: blades as wide as shields, sharp as razors. And its face... its face was a mask of frozen pain, a web of twisted flesh that screamed in silence.

The creature roared, a sound that made Loriel’s bones vibrate to the marrow. She felt the ground tremble under her feet, and she understood that this would not be like the others.

The Prime-Demon advanced, its steps slow and heavy, its blade-arms dragging on the ground, carving furrows in the charred stone. The other demons moved aside, as if to give it their place.

Konstantin raised his sword and concentrated all the magic he had left in the blade. It blazed with a blinding white light, and he planted the tip in the ground. A wave of blue flames surged forth, washed over the creature, licking its carapace, seeking a weakness.

The demon slowed, but it did not stop. Its carapace cracked, fissures opened, but it continued to advance, its blade-arms spinning slowly, ready to strike.

Loriel leaped. She jumped, her spear extended like an arrow, aiming for the monster’s eyes, empty orbits burning with an inner fire. The tip of her spear struck the carapace at forehead level. It ricocheted, leaving only a scratch.

"Damn..." she murmured as she landed.

The Prime-Demon brought down its blade-arm on her. Loriel dove to the side, the cutting metal tearing the air a few centimeters from her flank. She rolled, got up, and attacked again. This time, she aimed for the demon’s joints, where the carapace was thinner. Her spear sank into the creature’s elbow. A jet of black blood spurted, and the demon’s arm sagged, but did not fall.

The monster howled, a cry of rage and pain mixed together, and struck with its other arm. Loriel dodged, but too slowly. The blade hit her in the shoulder, tearing her armor, slicing the flesh. She retreated, biting her lip to keep from crying out, her left hand pressing the wound.

Konstantin closed his eyes for a second. He breathed deeply, and his entire body began to glow with an inner light, his veins traced in blue under his pale skin. He raised his sword toward the rift - not toward the demon, but toward the gaping breach pulsing in the sky.

The runes he had traced blazed all at once. The rift shuddered, contracted, like a muscle tensing before snapping.

The Prime-Demon raised its valid arm to strike Konstantin, but Loriel was faster. She planted her spear in the ground, jumped onto the shaft, and used her momentum to fly upward. Her boot struck the demon’s jaw, unbalancing it. It wavered, and she seized that second to tear her spear from the ground and drive it into the monster’s throat.

This time, the tip found the flesh. Loriel twisted, pushed, and the blade came out the other side of the demon’s neck. The black blood spurted, burning, and the monster collapsed, its blade-arms clattering to the ground.

Loriel landed, trembling, her breathing panting. Her wound at the shoulder was bleeding profusely, but she forced herself to stay on her feet.
