Chapter 490: The Path to Becoming the Wizard of the Constellation
*2000 years before the Millennial War, Unknown Zone, Forest in the future that will be called Yggdrasil*
The world that Diavolo Star Giovanna had known no longer existed. The ashes of the Third World War had finally settled, but what they left behind was an insult to all the laws of physics and biology he had studied in Italy.
The sky was no longer quite blue, and the air itself seemed to vibrate with an invisible frequency that gave it an almost painful clarity. Diavolo walked with a steady step, his leather boots sinking into a moss that was too bright a green to be natural.
Diavolo still wore a lab coat, now reinforced with leather straps and salvaged metal plates. His blond hair, once neatly cut, had become shoulder-length and wild, framing a face whose features had sharpened under the effect of radiation and deprivation. His eyes, a deep black, scanned the surroundings with analytical intensity, constantly seeking to quantify the irrational.
His build was athletic, sculpted by years of survival in the ruins of old Europe, but he mainly exuded an aura of sovereign calm, that of a man who had seen the end of his species and had decided not to die.
At his side was his wife. She was of a beauty that bordered on the supernatural. Her long white hair, of a purity like fresh snow, cascaded down to the middle of her back, catching every glimmer from the canopy. Her skin had the pallor and fragility of alabaster, revealing a network of bluish veins. Her eyes, true pearly jewels with silvery reflections, seemed to perceive things that Diavolo could only guess at.
She was undoubtedly the ancestor of the Luna.
Norah Del Luna, who would in the future be Jasper’s grandmother.
"Diavolo... I felt a powerful energy..." murmured Norah.
Diavolo stopped and took a rudimentary measuring device out of his satchel, but the needle spun wildly in all directions before locking up.
"The irradiation is total, Norah..." replied Diavolo, frowning. "My instruments have been useless since we crossed this invisible boundary... It is as if the atom itself had changed its behavior."
They advanced together, pushing aside giant ferns that seemed to breathe at a slow rhythm. Suddenly, the vegetation opened onto a clearing of dizzying immensity.
In the center stood a gigantic tree, whose trunk was so wide it could have housed an entire city. Its roots sank into the ground like tentacles of petrified wood, while its branches seemed to want to pierce the celestial vault.
"It is... fascinating..." murmured Diavolo, his eyes fixed on the veins of golden light that ran through the tree’s bark. "It is the epicenter... It is here that everything begins."
Norah took a step forward, as if drawn by an inaudible song. She extended a delicate hand toward the vibrating bark. Her fingers trembled with contained emotion.
Diavolo stopped her immediately by firmly grabbing her wrist.
"Do not do anything reckless, Norah..." he ordered, his voice heavy with an anxiety he struggled to mask. "The mutation makes the fauna and flora hostile everywhere else... We do not know how this organism will react to direct contact."
But Norah no longer seemed to hear him. Her silvery gaze had become fixed, her pupils dilated to the extreme. She was as if hypnotized by the tree’s pulsation, a resonance that seemed to match the beating of her own heart.
"It is calling me... Diavolo..." she breathed. "I feel the world behind the world... The Other World..."
With a sudden movement and unexpected strength, she pushed Diavolo backward. The scientist stumbled on a root and fell to the ground, breathless.
"Norah!!!" he shouted, trying to get up.
As Norah’s hand made contact with the luminous surface of the tree, reality seemed to crack. A shockwave of pure mana swept the clearing, knocking Diavolo down a second time. The air became charged with sparkling particles, and the silence of the forest was replaced by a harmony of a thousand celestial voices.
And there, Diavolo saw a spiritual figure emerge from the tree. The entity was immense, enveloped in an aura of primordial power that made the ground tremble. Its features were both noble and bestial. Behind it, seven other smaller figures, but just as radiant, emerged from the living wood, each emanating a distinct elemental energy.
Their silhouettes were flames of changing colors.
Norah stood at the center of this divine circle, her body beginning to glow with the same pearly light. Her appearance mutated before her husband’s horrified eyes. Her ears elongated further, ending in sharp points, and her moon eyes illuminated with a power that no longer belonged to the world of mortals.
"Norah!!!" shouted Diavolo again, reaching out toward her in a desperate gesture.
But before he could do anything, his wife disappeared in a burst of silvery light that seemed to absorb all the surrounding matter. The spiritual figures dissipated at the same time as her, returning into the very essence of the Yggdrasil tree.
Silence fell abruptly over the clearing. Diavolo remained alone, kneeling in the grass, his arms still outstretched toward the void. He was panting, his eyes fixed on the exact spot where Norah had stood a moment earlier. Nothing remained, not even a footprint, only the lingering scent of her skin and a residual vibration in the air.
"This is not possible... Molecular dematerialization? A transition to another dimension?" thought Diavolo aloud, his scientific mind fighting against the rising panic.
He rose slowly, his legs still unsteady. He approached the tree and struck the bark with his fists.
"Give her back to me!" he yelled, his voice breaking against the motionless trunk. "Give me back Norah!"
The tree remained silent. The golden veins continued to pulse with millennial indifference. Diavolo then understood that the world he had just discovered did not obey logic... And that he would have to do everything to find his wife.
The loss of his wife was the catalyst for his transformation. That day, the man named Diavolo Star Giovanna began to die, giving way to a devouring obsession for knowledge.
He spent the following weeks building a makeshift shelter at the foot of the tree, using his knowledge to try to reopen the portal. He began to record his discoveries in a grimoire, tracing the first mudras and formulating the basics of the Mystical Arts that he would teach much later. His hair whitened prematurely under the effect of stress and constant exposure to the pure mana from the source.
"If this world refuses to give me answers, I will tear them from it" he swore as the moon of Yggdrasil began to rise on the horizon.
