Chapter 1066 - 420: Twisted Prayer (Part 2)
"You couldn’t even handle it."
Zhang Beixing looked puzzled at White, as well as the worried faces of the noblewomen and the steward around him.
"You all needn’t worry too much, right?"
"That monster has already been injured by me, its way of hiding is just a bit special."
"As long as I’m staying here, you don’t need to worry about your safety."
White originally thought that even Zhang Beixing had no way to deal with this monster, and feared he might not escape death himself.
Unexpectedly, Zhang Beixing suddenly changed the narrative with such a sentence.
A smile returned to White’s face again, though it wasn’t the best result, it was a blessing amid misfortune.
"That’s great, Minister Zhang."
"Rest assured, stay here. I’ll have them heat up the steak for you."
Looking at the slightly cold steak in White’s hand, Zhang Beixing twitched the corner of his mouth.
"No rush on that yet."
"I still have some questions to ask you."
As he said this, Zhang Beixing’s expression grew a bit more solemn.
Seeing Zhang Beixing’s serious demeanor, White became more formal as well.
"Speak, Minister Zhang."
Zhang Beixing pondered for a moment.
He pointed his finger toward the west of the estate.
"The monster’s movement trajectory was strange just now, heading straight to a small building there."
"It looks like a church to me over there; I think it might be related to the monster."
Hearing Zhang Beixing mention that small church to the west,
White, the steward, and the noblewomen all showed a hint of surprise on their faces.
"Surely not, Minister Zhang, we are people of faith."
"Many festivals are celebrated there."
"How could a church attract a monster?"
Zhang Beixing nodded thoughtfully, then looked at Richard, who seemed a bit idle on one side.
"What do you think, Richard?"
Hearing Zhang Beixing call him, Richard was stunned for a moment. He had been only half-listening to the conversation, not really focusing on the questions within. Otherwise, he felt a bit confused when Zhang Beixing asked him.
Richard pondered for a while, then slowly spoke.
"A church indeed shouldn’t be a target to attract a monster."
"Is it possible that the monster was drawn by something else there?"
"Like someone inside?"
Zhang Beixing nodded, acknowledging that there is reason in the analysis of this Federation Clan young master.
During the hasty monster chase, Zhang Beixing hadn’t paid attention to any special vibes from the church.
But in terms of people, there indeed was one.
Now Zhang Beixing nodding clearly indicated approval of Richard’s notion.
White spoke a bit at a loss.
"But now the family members should all be in the rooms."
"There shouldn’t be anyone in the church, right?"
Zhang Beixing stared at White’s face for a few seconds.
He could tell from his expression he wasn’t lying; he genuinely didn’t know there was anyone inside the church at this moment.
But who else could be there, apart from members of the Alba family?
Zhang Beixing lightly shook his head.
"Who knows, think again."
Stumped by Zhang Beixing’s question, White was at a loss.
The Alba family was indeed noble.
But people aren’t stupid enough to run to the church knowing there’s a monster at any time that might attack them.
Suddenly, the steward spoke up hesitantly.
"Sir, earlier I saw the young master tightly clutching a cross while praying."
"Could it be the young master?"
Upon hearing the steward’s words, the noblewoman and White’s expressions changed slightly, just about to deny it.
But the words halted at their lips, they remained unsaid.
The steward’s guess was not unfounded.
Their eldest son always had a mindset that was hard to understand.
Although eccentric, his faith in God was more passionate than anyone else’s.
If there was anyone in the entire Alba family who might go to the church at such a time,
it would indeed be him.
"Why would he run to the church instead of staying safely in his room at a time like this?"
How would one know the answer to such questions?
Faced with White’s harsh questioning, the steward remained silent, standing respectfully aside.
Zhang Beixing waved his hand.
"Enough, whether he’s in the church or not, I still need to go check it."
After speaking, he turned and walked towards the door, Richard closely following behind him.
White and the noblewoman both sighed in unison.
Not because there was some hidden secret in the church.
But the Alba family, despite their strength, was weak compared to facing Minister Zhang alone, so there were hardly any secrets to speak of.
It was simply because their eldest son, with his reclusive nature, had left them embarrassed time and again over the years.
So whenever something related to him happened, the two would subconsciously avoid facing it.
However, since things had progressed to this stage, there was no longer any point in hiding.
The two followed Zhang Beixing towards the small church, along with the steward.
Zhang Beixing led the few people, soon arriving in front of the church.
Even from a distance, Richard’s speculation was confirmed.
Although this small building wasn’t lit brightly, faint light could be seen through the windows.
Clearly, someone inside was using candles or the like for lighting.
White, the noblewoman, and the steward appeared puzzled.
When they reached the church door, through the somewhat old wooden door,
they heard singing from inside, the song was reverent; from the tune, it seemed to be a hymn, sung by someone clearly devout.
Zhang Beixing pushed the door open with force.
What greeted Zhang Beixing’s eyes was the man from earlier today, limping, his face full of unapproachable arrogance, holding a candle stand in his hand.
Kneeling under the giant cross in the center of the church, possibly due to being engrossed and excited while singing,
his body was slightly trembling. Whether the man was too absorbed to notice or simply ignored everything else remained unclear.
The man never turned his head, continuously singing hymns.
With the dim candlelight, the scene appeared somewhat eerie.
White saw his son engrossed in such antics, and immediately yelled from the church entrance,
"Peter, what are you doing?"
"If it weren’t for Minister Zhang being here to stop it, the monster would have almost barged in and devoured you just now."
Despite White’s shouting, Peter acted as if nothing had happened.
With the final high-pitched note ending,
Peter slowly put down the candle stand, clasped his hands in prayer, and after uttering an "Amen,"
he slowly picked up the candle stand and stood up.
Peter turned around, and the pious expression on his face instantly vanished, replaced again by a look of disdain.
"What monster? It’s just a test by the devil."
"With the loving Father protecting me, it won’t harm me in the slightest."
Listening to Peter’s nonsensical talk, the faces of the noblewoman, White, and the steward turned a bit grim.
But Richard and Zhang Beixing both looked at Peter with eyes as if watching a monkey.
White’s voice carried a hint of anger.
"What nonsense are you spouting? Hurry, thank Minister Zhang."
Peter’s eyes, cold and dismissive, swept over Zhang Beixing.
With a disdainful snort, he said nothing, limping out of the church.
Seeing his eldest son’s ungratefulness, White was both furious and at a loss on how to teach him.
Even as Peter’s figure disappeared from everyone’s view outside the church, he never looked back at Zhang Beixing.
White only felt his blood boiling at that moment.
"Bastard, what a bastard."
"Being pious here is useless. The things he’s done deserve a hundred trips to hell."
Upon hearing White’s words, the noblewoman hastily nudged him from behind.
White immediately realized his overreaction.
"I truly apologize, Minister Zhang, we’ve spoiled him."
Zhang Beixing was still in thoughtful recollection of what White said earlier.
Those things? Trips to hell.
Recalling the monster’s unwilling eyes prevented from entering the church now made things appear not so straightforward. This clearly had some connection with this man named Peter.
But what exactly could the link between them be?
