Chapter 91 - 90: A New Beginning
Nina followed Iris along the main path, leaving the dormitories and Garden Villas behind them.
The farther they walked, the more obvious the scale of Velaris became.
The buildings they had seen so far occupied only a small portion of the territory. Beyond them, the forest stretched in every direction, broken only by the paths that had already been cleared.
Nina looked around curiously.
"So this is all part of Velaris?"
Iris nodded.
"Yes."
"All of it?"
"Yes."
Nina slowed for a moment.
She had known the territory was large. She had seen the walls and had heard people talk about its size, but hearing the number and actually seeing the land were two different things.
There was simply too much of it.
They could walk for hours and still not reach the other end.
Kyle looked toward the forest.
"Are there buildings everywhere?"
"Not yet."
"Then what’s out there?"
"Mostly forest."
"Mostly?"
Iris glanced at him.
"We haven’t explored everything."
Kyle raised his brows.
"So there could be anything out there?"
"Possibly."
That answer made several people look toward the trees with renewed interest.
Edwin immediately shook his head.
"Don’t even think about wandering off."
Kyle looked offended.
"I wasn’t going to."
Kai laughed.
"You absolutely were."
Nina smiled as the two began arguing behind them.
Iris continued walking.
She didn’t seem concerned.
The paths around the developed area were safe enough, and the bodyguards remained stationed around the walls and gates. The deeper parts of the territory could wait until they had a reason to explore them.
For now, there were more important things for the newcomers to see.
A little farther ahead, the trees began to thin.
Nina’s eyes widened.
"What is that?"
Iris followed her gaze.
A wide stretch of cleared land lay ahead of them.
It was empty for the moment, but the space was large enough to accommodate several buildings.
"This area hasn’t been developed yet," Iris said.
Nina looked around.
"It’s huge."
"There’s a lot of empty land in Velaris."
"What are you going to build here?"
Iris paused.
"I’m not sure yet."
Kyle looked surprised.
"You don’t have everything planned?"
"No."
Iris glanced across the empty space.
"I know some of what I want eventually. Farms, workshops, businesses, more houses, roads. But there’s no reason to build everything before we know what people actually need."
Nina nodded.
That made sense.
It was easy to imagine a territory being built according to one person’s plans, only for those plans to become useless once the population changed.
Iris seemed to understand that.
She wasn’t trying to fill every empty space just because she could.
She was leaving room for the people who would eventually live there.
A voice came from behind them.
"So where do we work?"
Nina turned.
One of the survivors who had arrived with her was looking at Iris.
Iris considered the question.
"There are already things that need to be done."
"Like what?"
"Gathering resources. Farming when the farms are established. Construction. Crafting. Cooking. Maintenance. Hunting. There will be more once the territory develops."
The survivor nodded.
"What if we have a skill that’s not on that list?"
"Then we’ll find a use for it."
That answer seemed to satisfy him.
Another survivor spoke up.
"What if we don’t have any useful skills?"
Iris looked at him.
"Everyone can learn something."
The man was quiet for a moment.
Then he nodded.
Nina watched the exchange.
There was no grand speech.
No promise that everyone would suddenly have an easy life.
Just a simple acknowledgment that people could contribute and learn.
They continued walking.
Eventually, they reached an area where several people had gathered around a few tables.
Nina recognized some of them from the group that had arrived earlier.
They were examining materials and speaking with one another.
"What are they doing?" she asked.
"Trading," Iris replied.
Nina looked closer.
One person had several bundles of gathered materials while another had food.
Someone else appeared to be offering tools.
The sight made Nina pause.
"So people can already trade here?"
"Yes."
"Between themselves?"
"Yes."
Nina smiled.
That was another sign that Velaris was becoming something more than a refuge.
People weren’t simply receiving what they needed.
They were beginning to exchange things.
They were finding ways to make use of what they had.
Kyle walked closer to one of the tables.
"What’s that?"
The person holding the object looked at him.
"A tool."
"What kind?"
"A gathering tool."
Kyle examined it.
"Did you make it?"
The man nodded.
"I’m a blacksmith."
Kyle looked impressed.
"You made that?"
"Yes."
"Can you make another?"
The blacksmith laughed.
"Probably."
Kyle looked toward Iris.
"You need people like him."
Iris nodded.
"I know."
The blacksmith looked at her.
"I can make more if there are materials."
"We’ll make sure you have access to what you need."
The man’s expression brightened.
"Then I can work."
Iris nodded.
"That would be useful."
Nina watched the exchange carefully.
This was what she had been missing.
The territory wasn’t simply giving people shelter.
It was creating opportunities for people to use whatever abilities they had.
A person who had been nearly useless in the wilderness might suddenly have value here.
A carpenter could build furniture.
A blacksmith could make tools.
A cook could prepare food.
A farmer could grow crops.
A healer could treat injuries.
The territory could give those skills somewhere to matter.
Nina looked at the blacksmith again.
He was already talking excitedly about what he could make.
His expression was completely different from the exhausted faces she had seen outside the walls.
He looked hopeful.
They continued deeper into the developed area.
Iris pointed out several locations as they passed.
"This area will eventually be used for workshops."
She pointed farther ahead.
"That space could become part of the farming area."
Then she gestured toward another cleared section.
"We’ll probably need a proper market eventually."
Nina looked around.
"Eventually?"
Iris smiled.
"We’ve only just started."
Nina laughed softly.
"You say that like you don’t already have an entire territory."
"I do."
"But you’re still saying you’ve just started."
"Because we have."
Nina looked toward the enormous forest surrounding them.
She understood.
The walls might already exist.
The buildings might already exist.
But the actual community was still young.
Very young.
They eventually reached a small open area where several villagers were gathered.
One of them waved when they saw Iris.
"Lady Iris."
Iris nodded in greeting.
Nina noticed the villagers immediately relaxed when they saw her.
Not because they were afraid of her.
It was different.
There was familiarity there.
These people already knew her.
They had been with her before the newcomers arrived.
One of the villagers approached.
"The food storage is fine for now."
"Good."
"We’ll need more space if the population keeps increasing."
Iris nodded.
"I expected that."
The villager glanced at the newcomers.
"Are these the people from the river?"
"Yes."
The villager smiled.
"Welcome to Velaris."
A few of the survivors returned the greeting.
Nina felt something shift inside her.
It was such a simple exchange.
Yet it made the territory feel more welcoming.
They weren’t merely outsiders who had crossed through a gate.
Someone had actually welcomed them.
Iris continued walking.
Nina stayed beside her.
"Does everyone know you?"
"Not everyone."
"But they know you."
"I’ve been here longer."
Nina looked ahead.
"And you’re the one in charge."
Iris smiled slightly.
"I suppose."
Nina laughed.
"You suppose?"
"I don’t spend much time thinking about titles."
That answer sounded like Iris.
Nina had only known her for a short time, but she was beginning to understand that Iris wasn’t interested in acting important.
She cared about whether things worked.
That was obvious.
They eventually returned toward the central part of the settlement.
The afternoon sun had begun to shift lower in the sky.
People were still moving between the buildings.
The dormitories were busier now.
More survivors had settled into rooms, while others had begun searching for work or speaking with people who could help them.
Near the Garden Villas, Nina spotted Kyle and several others returning from their earlier discussion.
Kyle immediately walked over.
"We found one."
Nina raised an eyebrow.
"A house?"
"A Garden Villa."
"You’re renting it?"
"Trying to."
Edwin arrived behind him.
"We’re still discussing the price."
Kyle shrugged.
"We’ll figure it out."
Nina smiled.
"Good."
She looked around at everyone who had arrived with her.
They were already making decisions.
Already choosing where to stay.
Already looking for work.
Already thinking about what came next.
Nina glanced toward the walls.
Only a short while ago, those walls had represented safety.
Now they felt like the boundary of a new life.
She looked toward Iris.
"You built all of this?"
Iris shook her head.
"Not alone."
Nina looked around.
The villagers were working.
The bodyguards were protecting the walls.
The survivors were beginning to find their places.
The Hales were moving through the territory as though they already belonged here.
Nina smiled.
"I think that’s what makes it different."
Iris looked at her.
"What?"
"It’s not just a territory anymore."
Iris was quiet.
Nina gestured around them.
"Everyone is doing something."
Iris looked across Velaris.
For a moment, she didn’t answer.
Then a small smile appeared on her face.
"That’s the goal."
Nina nodded.
The word stayed with her.
Goal.
Not survival.
Not simply protection.
Something bigger.
A place where people could actually live.
The sun continued sinking toward the horizon.
