Extra's Guide To Surviving The Apocalypse

Chapter 68 - 67: A Village Begins to Breathe

Sponsored

For the second time that day...

The System answered.

The earth answered first.

A low, steady vibration spread beneath everyone’s feet, gentler than before yet somehow grander.

Instead of concentrating on a single construction site, the pulse raced outward from the Village Center in every direction, flowing through the open grasslands like invisible ripples across still water.

Blue-white lines burst from the base of the Village Center.

Unlike before, they did not gather around one building. They scattered. One line stretched toward the eastern residential district.

Another curved gracefully around a cluster of mature trees. Several more branched away like veins, spreading across the untouched landscape until an intricate web covered nearly the entire planned neighborhood.

Caleb slowly turned in a circle.

"...It’s doing everything at once."

The glowing network expanded farther.

The wide avenue Henry had planned appeared first.

A brilliant outline traced six carriage lanes through the heart of Velaris before solid stone surged upward from beneath the earth.

Huge paving stones lifted effortlessly into the air.

They rotated once, aligned themselves perfectly, then settled into place with deep, satisfying thuds.

One after another.

Without pause.

Without a single mistake.

The avenue stretched farther and farther until it reached the residential district.

Then the secondary roads began.

Smaller stone roads branched naturally from the main avenue instead of forming rigid grids.

They curved gently around existing terrain, following the landscape instead of fighting against it.

Benjamin watched the intersections appear "They’re following the blueprint exactly... Even the turning radius is consistent."

Henry gave a small nod. "The System corrected every measurement."

Veronica smiled as narrower paths appeared between the roads.

Garden walkways.

Unlike the broad avenues, these were paved with smaller stones arranged in elegant patterns.

Some wound between future homes.

Others curved around flower beds that did not yet exist.

They looked less like streets and more like peaceful walking paths.

Caleb scratched his cheek.

"...Okay."

"I officially can’t complain anymore."

The roads alone already looked expensive."

Soft laughter spread through the group.

Then another construction zone lit up.

Dozens of blue outlines rose simultaneously throughout the residential district.

Garden Villas.

Eight of them.

Rather than standing in perfectly straight military rows, every outline occupied a slightly different position.

Some overlooked intersections.

Some faced small green spaces.

Several stood beneath the shade of towering trees that Iris had insisted on preserving.

The neighborhood looked planned.

Not manufactured.

Henry folded his arms with quiet satisfaction.

"Much better."

"It feels lived in."

Iris smiled.

That had been exactly what she wanted.

Too many settlements in games looked identical.

Every house copied and pasted beside the next.

Velaris wouldn’t become one of them.

The first villa began rising.

Stone foundations emerged from the earth before timber walls assembled themselves above them.

Roof beams floated effortlessly into position.

Windows shimmered into existence.

Doors settled neatly into carved frames.

Almost immediately another villa started.

Then another.

Soon all eight were under construction simultaneously.

The neighborhood became a carefully choreographed dance of stone, timber and light.

Entire walls assembled while rooftops settled elsewhere.

Staircases formed inside completed shells.

Balconies slid into place.

Garden fences quietly appeared around several homes.

Everything happened together.

Yet nothing collided.

Nothing delayed anything else.

Benjamin’s eyes moved constantly from one building to another.

"...The System isn’t constructing them one by one."

"It’s constructing every stage simultaneously."

Henry quietly observed the sequence.

"It optimizes every movement."

"It doesn’t waste time."

Veronica slowly turned as another villa completed.

"It’s beautiful."

One by one, warm homes appeared among the trees.

No two views looked exactly the same.

Some front doors faced quiet garden paths.

Others overlooked the broad avenue leading toward the Village Center.

The preserved trees transformed the entire district.

Their broad canopies cast comfortable patches of shade across the stone walkways while birds continued singing as though the impossible construction surrounding them meant nothing at all.

Caleb pointed toward one particularly enormous oak.

"I still can’t believe that tree won an argument."

"It deserved to," Iris replied.

"It was here first."

Caleb laughed.

"I walked right into that one."

Then...

Three larger blue frameworks appeared beside one another.

The Hale family villas.

From the outside, they looked almost identical to the standard Garden Villas.

Comfortable.

Elegant.

Unassuming.

Nobody unfamiliar with the blueprint would ever suspect that hidden passages connected all three residences beneath ordinary walls.

They looked like neighboring family homes.

Exactly as Henry had intended.

The three villas rose together.

Foundations.

Walls.

Roof beams.

Stone chimneys.

Wide windows.

Everything assembled with the same flawless precision.

When the final roof tiles settled into place, the entire residential district fell silent once more.

The humming faded.

The glowing construction lines slowly disappeared.

Before them stood an entirely new neighborhood.

Wide stone roads connected graceful homes surrounded by mature trees and winding garden paths.

Instead of empty grassland...

Velaris finally looked inhabited.

Not like an abandoned territory.

Not like an artificial settlement.

Like a place where people could truly build a life.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Even Caleb seemed unable to find a joke.

Then footsteps echoed from the direction of the outer gate.

Everyone turned.

Elias appeared first, carrying several bundles of gathered supplies over one shoulder.

Behind him came the bodyguards, each returning with backpacks, bundles of firewood, medicinal plants, and freshly gathered materials from the surrounding forest.

Snow bounded happily through the open gate before skidding to a stop.

The massive mutated dog stared ahead.

Dog stopped beside him.

Both animals tilted their heads almost in perfect synchronization.

Snow let out one confused bark.

Dog answered with a low rumble.

One of the bodyguards blinked.

"...We left for a few hours."

Another slowly looked from the Village Center to the completed neighborhood.

"...Where did all of this come from?"

Elias remained unusually quiet.

His gaze swept across the broad stone roads, the elegant villas, and the orderly residential district before finally settling on Iris.

"...The System?"

Iris smiled and nodded.

"It was busy."

Caleb grinned.

"You missed the best part."

"I’ve never seen rocks fly before."

That finally broke the silence.

Several of the bodyguards laughed in disbelief while Snow sprinted happily down one of the newly completed garden paths as though inspecting his new territory.

Dog followed at a much calmer pace.

Watching the two oversized dogs explore the neighborhood somehow made the completed district feel even more alive.

Caleb suddenly stopped walking.

"...Wait."

Everyone looked toward him.

He frowned thoughtfully.

"When we built the Village Center..."

"The System gave us wood and stone because it recycled everything inside the construction area."

He looked toward the distant wall surrounding Velaris.

"...So why didn’t we get anything when we built the Darkstone Wall?"

The smiles gradually disappeared.

Benjamin blinked.

Henry folded his arms.

Veronica slowly turned toward Iris.

Iris immediately opened the Territory construction log.

She searched through the completed records once.

Then again.

Nothing.

No explanation.

No comparison.

No mention of reclaimed resources.

After nearly a minute, she closed the panel.

"...I don’t know."

No one spoke.

For the first time since discovering the System’s construction abilities...

Even it still had secrets.

Henry looked toward the newly completed neighborhood one last time before letting out a quiet breath.

"We’ll figure it out eventually," he said. "The System hasn’t given us every answer yet."

Benjamin nodded in agreement. "We’ve only been here a few days. There are probably plenty of mechanics we haven’t discovered."

Nobody disagreed.

The unanswered question about the wall lingered in everyone’s minds, but there was little point dwelling on something they had no way of testing.

Iris slowly closed the construction menu.

Then her eyes widened.

"...Wait."

Everyone turned toward her.

"What is it?" Veronica asked.

Iris blinked once before looking back at the Village Center, the elegant stone roads stretching through the residential district, and the eleven completed villas nestled naturally among the preserved trees.

"How much..."

She paused.

"...did all of this actually cost us?"

Silence fell.

Caleb’s expression slowly changed.

"...Oh."

Benjamin adjusted his glasses.

"...That’s actually a good question."

Without another word, Iris reopened the Territory Panel.

A familiar translucent screen unfolded before her. Then she clicked on Territory Status.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Benjamin was the first to break the silence "Read the previous construction costs."

Iris nodded.

"The Darkstone Wall consumed one thousand Wood, one thousand Stone, and one thousand five hundred Gold."

Benjamin nodded. "The blueprint?"

"One thousand Gold."

"And everything we just built..."

Her eyes skimmed through the construction log. "The Village Center, roads, walkways and residences consumed another one thousand five hundred and fifty Gold."

Caleb’s eyes grew wider with every number " Hold on."
