Chapter 111: Blood Drop
Gu Fei said gravely, "A hidden weapon."
Uncle Ma raised an eyebrow. "What kind of hidden weapon is powerful enough to shatter a skull?"
Gu Fei said calmly, "The Blood Drop."
’If Gu Zhang hadn’t been on the brink of death just now, she never would have taken out her gun.’
’This thing was no joke.’
Uncle Ma’s question immediately made Gu Fei suspicious. She glanced at the common folk around them. None of them cared what she had used to kill the wolf. In fact, they went out of their way to avoid the carcasses, let alone inspect a dead wolf’s head.
Even the two guards from the governor’s house paid it no mind, quickly returning to their young master’s side. Yet Uncle Ma insisted on pressing for details.
’This could only mean one thing: Uncle Ma was no ordinary man.’
’And what about everything he’d shown throughout their journey, especially today? Was he really just a simple, has-been dart master?’
’Could he have some other motive for acting as her family’s guide?’
Uncle Ma, unaware that Gu Fei had grown suspicious of him, was still asking, "What is this ’Blood Drop’? How come I’ve never heard of it?"
Gu Fei smiled. "My sect has its rules. I can’t talk about it."
"A sect? You belong to a sect?"
Gu Fei gave a slight smile. "Of course. Where else would I have learned my skills?"
"Then, may I ask which sect? And who is your master?"
Gu Fei looked at Uncle Ma and said slowly, "These are sect secrets. I’m afraid I can’t tell you."
With that, Gu Fei walked over and called to her great-uncle to help with the wolf carcasses.
Her great-uncle came over, knife in hand. Gu Fei squatted nearby, and once she saw Uncle Ma walk away, she waited until her great-uncle wasn’t looking. Prodding around the carcasses, she collected the bullets from inside the two wolves and the casings from the ground, storing them all in her space.
Watching her great-uncle skin the wolves, Gu Fei asked, "Great-Uncle, can we eat the meat?"
Her great-uncle chuckled. "Of course we can. It’s actually pretty tasty."
Gu Fei brightened up. "One wolf must be dozens of pounds, right? That’s enough to last us for a few days."
Over by the fire, Uncle Ma was organizing the night watch. He assigned Zhang Ze, her great-uncle’s eldest son Yougen, Gu Sanlang, and Boss Zhang, telling each of them to watch a different direction.
Uncle Ma gave Boss Zhang a special warning. "You can’t doze off again. This is serious. If you see wolves, you shout a warning immediately. Got it?"
Boss Zhang nodded repeatedly. "Don’t you worry, sir. It’s a matter of life and death. I won’t be careless."
Her great-uncle finished skinning the two wolves Gu Fei had killed and hung the pelts up to dry before carving the meat off the bones piece by piece.
Lian’er came over to help, and her great-aunt brought out some salt, using a basin to begin curing the wolf meat.
Her great-aunt suddenly looked at Gu Fei. "Little Fei, hurry and wash your face and change your clothes. You’re covered in blood—it must have soaked right through."
Only then did Gu Fei look down at herself. It was true—she was covered in so much blood it was a frightening sight.
Su Chen and his two guards were sitting nearby, and at these words, he glanced over at Gu Fei.
There were a few splatters of blood on her face. On her blue, floral-patterned dress, a large patch across her shoulder and chest had turned the white flowers red.
’It was a wonder the girl could still stand to wear them.’
Zhang Ze also glanced at Gu Fei then and said in a low voice, "That little girl is really something else. She killed both of those wolves by herself."
Su Chen raised an eyebrow. "Her?" He had been sitting inside the carriage earlier and hadn’t gotten a clear look at what happened.
