Chapter 171: Young Master Su Sends New Year Gifts
Mrs. Chen slapped Gu Sanlang on the back. "Riches? Don’t count your chickens before they hatch!"
Gu Zhang looked at Gu Sanlang. "Don’t go shouting about this outside. We don’t know if it will even work. Raising pearl clams requires a lot of capital and takes a long time. Plus, the pearl clams get sick and die easily. It’s not that simple to raise them. We could lose our entire investment."
Gu Zhang saw Gu Sanlang deflate instantly, and Gu Erlang lost his spirit as well.
He added, "But no matter how difficult, we have to do it. It’s fine if we lose a little at the start. If we succeed, the profits won’t be just a little bit. For generations to come, our family can rely on this skill to not just survive, but to live well."
Mrs. Chen looked at Gu Fei. She finally understood why Gu Fei had wanted to go into the silver building to look at pearls that day. So, she had been planning to raise pearl clams all along.
Thinking about that one large pearl being worth two thousand taels of silver, Mrs. Chen’s heart began to pound with excitement. She wasn’t greedy; if they could produce just one pearl like that a year, the family would be outrageously wealthy!
Seeing her father finish his speech, Gu Fei immediately started clapping. ’When the leader is done talking, you have to give him a round of applause!’
Little Cao clapped along, and Gu Fei continued to flatter the "leader." "Dad, I think you spoke very well today. If our family were a company, you’d be the chairman."
Gu Qing asked curiously, "What’s a ’chairman’?"
Little Cao jumped in to answer, "I know! It means Grandpa is very sensible!"
"Grandma always praises me for being sensible."
Gu Fei burst out laughing, pulling Little Cao into a hug and kissing her cheek. "Oh, Little Cao, you’re a real treasure." Little Cao giggled.
After the meeting, everyone went back to what they were doing—some cracking melon seeds, others eating beef jerky. Although they hadn’t earned any money yet, their hearts were ablaze with hope.
After the meeting, Gu Fei gave her father fifty taels of silver to buy the clams.
Sure enough, the next day Gu Zhang brought back a cartload of clams. The clams he bought weren’t fully mature yet and would need until March or April to ripen and lay eggs.
Gu Zhang planned to set aside some for breeding and to implant the rest directly once spring arrived.
Next, Gu Zhang bought fish fry and released them into the pond.
He then bought soybeans, ground them into soy milk, and poured it into the pond to provide enough nutrients for the pearl clams.
In the blink of an eye, it was the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. That morning, Liu Zhuangtou was leaning against a wall in the courtyard, sunning himself, when someone suddenly called out from the gate, "Is Mr. Gu in?"
Liu Zhuangtou quickly got up to see who it was, then said in pleasant surprise, "Mr. Zhang! It’s you!"
Zhang Ze looked at him. "You recognize me?"
Liu Zhuangtou bowed and scraped. "I have seen you with the Young Master before, Mr. Zhang."
Zhang Ze nodded. "That’s good. I’ve come to deliver a New Year’s gift to Mr. Gu. Is he in?"
Just then, Ms. Qian came out of the kitchen. The moment she heard the words "New Year’s gift," her eyes lit up and she came running over. "Well, if it isn’t Mr. Zhang! What’s the gift? Is it for Gu the Second? His mother lives right inside!"
Zhang Ze shot her a cool glance, acting as if he didn’t recognize her.
Liu Zhuangtou quickly interjected, "Mr. Gu doesn’t live here anymore. He lives at the estate next door. Mr. Zhang, please come with me."
Zhang Ze nodded and followed Liu Zhuangtou out.
Ms. Qian watched from the doorway, then bolted inside, shouting as she ran, "Mother, that Young Master Su sent a New Year’s gift for Gu the Second!"
"It’s a huge carriage load!"
Aunt Liu, who was in the courtyard stitching a shoe sole, glanced at Ms. Qian and pursed her lips in disdain.
The eldest aunt sat by the door, watching with cold eyes as Ms. Qian scurried away.
Meanwhile, Zhang Ze quickly reached the Gu Family’s courtyard. When he knocked, Gu Qing answered the door and beamed with delight. "Brother Zhang, it’s been a while!"
"Please, come in, come in." Gu Qing quickly opened the door wider, ushering him inside.
