Chapter 572: The Mooncreek Curse
"Do you feel responsible for them now?" Sebastian asked his own question back, and she turned away from the water to look up at him.
"I don’t know. Everything keeps happening, and the more it does, the more confused I become, especially after what I saw this morning..."
Viola didn’t just feel responsible for the mermaids; she felt responsible for her own family, too. There was no question about where she wanted to spend the rest of her life, but lately, it had begun to feel as though that choice would soon be taken out of her hands if she didn’t get a grip on things and figure out what was real and what wasn’t.
She didn’t want this to continue until her babies were born. She wanted to bring them into a world where she was certain of what lay ahead, not one filled with unanswered questions and uncertainties. Perhaps it was time to stay away from the sea for good until she figured everything out. But how could she turn her back on the people she cared about when they were still down there, depending on her?
Sebastian noticed the troubled look in her eyes and pulled her closer against his chest, keeping the blanket wrapped securely around her. "Let’s get into the car."
He carried her over and settled her inside before taking over the driving from his brother, who had also fallen silent after seeing their sister.
Sebastian turned up the car’s heat as he watched his wife sitting with her head lolled to the side and her hands over her stomach. He wondered what this discovery she had made this morning, and what hearing about the mermaids, held for their own future, but whatever it was, he knew he would fight for her.
He started the car.
Meanwhile, in the High Tower, most of the people were completely unaware of anything beyond the pack’s outside affairs and the fact that their Luna had fought for them. Many of them had seen the Darkbur Pack driven away from their pack, but even though that case had settled down, the guests who had come for the memorials had yet to leave.
Sebastian’s step-aunts were used to receiving the most special treatment of their lives everywhere they went, but they couldn’t get as much as they thought they deserved in Silver, because the Luna obviously didn’t like them and had assigned an ill-mannered she-wolf to them, who made sure they didn’t get to do as they pleased.
They couldn’t take the treatment anymore and decided to poke their noses around for something to dig up about the Luna and report her to Eleanor, as she had a better way being the Alpha’s grandmother.
"You two shouldn’t go trying to offend that boy’s wife, I tell you," Came Eleanor’s words from where she was sitting and knitting a blue sweater while humming, as there was little to nothing she could do in Silver while she waited for her great-grandchildren to be born, after which she could return home.
Becky, one of the aunts, smiled stiffly as she looked at the elder she-wolf. "We are not trying to offend her, but we are stating the truth, mama. There are rumors that she is responsible for Silver’s curse, and that she might have cast a spell on your grandson to make him see her as his mate and the prophecy."
Eleanor only hummed at those words, as she knew how Becky and Beth liked to gossip and carry rumors around like two jobless people.
"You are not saying anything, mama. Won’t you talk some sense into your grandson?" Asked Becky, her lips pulled into a displeased line.
"You’re his aunt, Becky, how come you are not talking some sense into him?" Came Eleanor’s calm words as she looked at her step daughter. "You and everyone else saw how he doted upon her, and she’s a very lovely person. Don’t go offending her if you don’t want to receive his wrath." She gave her warning.
Sebastian was rarely possessive over anyone, nor did he show his caring outright, but for the first time since Eleanor had known her grandson, he showed it towards his Luna, especially during the fight last night, and that told her how much he cherished her. Messing with her would cause nothing but disaster, hence she let these two daughters of hers know that.
However, Becky and Beth believed that being related to Sebastian gave them the freedom to talk bad about his mate, and so they ignored the warnings, and Beth said,
"Didn’t you see her wolf last night, mama? You say we shouldn’t talk about her, but the truth can’t be hidden. She’s a black wolf, and I heard she has some connection to Mooncreek. Don’t tell me you have forgotten the rumors about Mooncreek so soon?"
Eleanor’s hands paused on her knitting, and a frown drew across her face. She had seen that Viola’s wolf was pure black, like ebony, a color everyone knew only Mooncreek’s Alphas carried, but there had been none since they all died in the flood.
Seeing Eleanor pause, the two sisters knew they had gotten her attention. "Everyone in our pack believes Mooncreek was cursed with bad luck that led to their deaths. They all died overnight, and the few who survived were nothing but bad luck to all the families who took them in."
Becky reached for her hot coffee, taking a sip as she looked at her mother over the rim and said, "You remember that couple in our pack who adopted one of the children who lost their parents? He killed them years later. And look at the Rodrigos in Silver, that doctor boy has brought them nothing but bad luck. Elder Natasha lost her husband the year he was adopted, and he—"
"What are you trying to get at?" Eleanor asked them in Spanish, narrowing her eyes.
"We are not trying to get at anything, we are just saying, what if she brings the Mooncreek bad luck to your grandson? Silver is already suffering a generational curse, and who knows how much worse she could make it. You should tell your grandson to change his Luna immediately and investigate her properly." Said Becky with a sense of importance, as she didn’t think their family should have anything to do with the bad luck and death that followed Mooncreek.
