Verity:

"You can’t keep playing this game."

With that, he leaned forward again, planting his hands against the wall on either side of me, effectively caging me between his arms.

"I’m going to uncover the truth about you, Verity, and when I do, it won’t look good for you."

Having delivered his warning, he stepped back.

I drew a deep breath, determined to have the last word.

"Well, you’re going to be terribly disappointed when you realize these are nothing but baseless accusations. And it’s sad, really, that every time I try to move on, someone reminds me that my very existence is a question mark. Apparently, I can’t even live my life without being judged."

With that, I turned away and headed for the door. But before opening it, I had one last thing to say.

"So, everything you did on the trip, was it all deliberate?" I asked.

He slowly slipped his hands into his trouser pockets, his gaze growing more intense as he studied my face.

"Thought so," I replied when he offered no answer. "I had a feeling. I guess I’m just not as suspicious of everyone as everyone seems to be of me."

With that, I finally walked out of the room, slamming the door hard behind me.

As I stepped outside, I began breathing heavily, almost as though I hadn’t been able to catch my breath inside that room.

I didn’t know what had suddenly come over me.

Perhaps it was the realization that the trip I’d considered such a success had actually been a test, one I’d failed miserably.

What hurt even more was knowing that the moments I’d believed Ragnar had genuinely shared with me had been nothing more than part of his game.

I didn’t know why I was taking it so personally.

I knew I shouldn’t have felt hurt, especially when I’d been playing a game with them myself.

Trying to act as casually as possible, I made my way toward the coffee machine.

That was when I noticed a few employees standing off to the side, engrossed in a conversation.

They kept glancing at something on a phone, then looking in my direction before whispering among themselves.

Something about their behavior made me uneasy.

When a male colleague joined the two women, all three burst into laughter.

I chose to ignore them and headed toward the espresso machine, picking up a cup to make myself some coffee.

Just then, I heard footsteps approaching, and one of the women came to stand beside me.

"So, Verity, how was the trip? How did the deal go?"

There was something about the way she asked those questions, a hint of mockery in her voice that made me feel as though she was deliberately trying to get under my skin.

"It went well. Alpha King Ragnar already told everyone about it when we got back," I replied, referring to the meeting we’d had earlier, where we’d practically discussed the entire deal.

"Oh, right." She nodded, exchanging a glance with her colleague. "No, it’s just that I thought you might have forgotten what happened on the trip. I mean, it was quite a special trip, wasn’t it?"

The one standing beside her immediately broke into laughter.

"What’s so funny?" I asked, glancing between them.

Before either could answer, the man stepped forward with a nasty smirk.

"Come on, Verity. We always knew you had your sights set pretty high. No wonder you never gave me a chance. I mean, why would you? There’s Alpha King Ragnar, and then there’s me."

The way he licked his lower lip made me want to punch him right in the face.

But before I could act on that impulse, I picked up a glass of water sitting nearby and raised it toward the woman, pretending I was about to throw it at her.

She flinched immediately, throwing both hands up to shield her face.

"Have you lost your mind?" she shrieked, stumbling back.

When she realized I’d only been trying to scare her, her expression shifted from fear to outright fury.

"Why?" I asked, casually shrugging a shoulder as I lowered the glass. "If you can’t handle someone giving you a taste of your own medicine, why bother opening your mouth in the first place?"

That only seemed to infuriate them further.

"Really?" the other woman snapped, stepping forward. "We’re not making this shit up, Verity. You should check the internet and all the videos about you. Everybody’s talking about you, you homewrecker."

Her friend quickly grabbed her arm and pulled her away, putting some distance between us.

They probably thought I was crazy enough to actually throw the drink in their faces.

But I was no longer paying attention to their reactions. My mind was stuck on what she’d just said.

What the hell did she mean by homewrecker?

What internet?

And what exactly was everyone talking about?

They had walked away, and I decided to check the internet.

And oh boy, I was in for quite a ride.

I had barely unlocked my phone and scrolled through a few images when memories of the trip came flooding back.

Before I could even go through all the clips and examine them properly, I heard someone snapping his fingers.

I looked up to find Ragnar standing outside his store, snapping his fingers to get my attention.

Then, with an angry, almost aggressive gesture, he crooked two fingers, summoning me back to his office.

That was when I realized he had already seen the videos, and for some reason, he seemed pissed off at me instead.

I was too exhausted to get into another argument with Ragnar, but since these videos seemed like a pretty big deal, I reluctantly made my way back to his office.

This time, he was standing right by the door, and the moment I stepped inside, he slammed it shut.

Before he could grab my arm, I quickly sidestepped and raised a warning finger, making it clear that he wasn’t to touch me again.
