Chapter 450-Good Girl

Verity:

Well, I’d be more than happy to let him handle it because if I’d been given the chance, I would’ve done things my own way, probably by embarrassing him a little in the process.

As I returned to my desk, Ragnar pulled out his phone to call his brothers.

I sat down and started typing, but the rage simmering inside me refused to settle.

He’d really managed to get under my skin by dumping all that extra work on me.

Everything had been fine until then.

His words hadn’t bothered me in the slightest, but the moment he decided to punish me with additional work, he’d crossed the fucking line.

And now I was waiting for his brothers.

But guess who else showed up with Jaguar and Theodore?

The moment the office door opened, Ragnar had already returned to his desk and was standing behind his chair, staring out the window.

Jaguar and Theodore stepped inside, followed by none other than Gigi.

Now, I had absolutely no idea what she was doing with them.

She’d left nearly half an hour ago, so why the heck was she back?

Had she really driven all the way here again, or had she never left in the first place?

Those were questions I’d probably never get answers to, considering Ragnar had practically held me captive at my desk.

"Yes, brother?" Jaguar asked, and I caught a hint of bitterness in his voice.

Theodore even offered Ragnar a smile as he turned away from the window to face them.

They’d seen the videos, and they were clearly bothered.

Meanwhile, Gigi stood there trembling slightly, forcing a huge smile onto her lips.

Now, that was interesting to watch. And if I’d noticed it, I was pretty sure Ragnar had, too.

"I know you have a ton of questions about those videos," Ragnar began.

"No, we know there have been arguments going on, and it’s okay. You guys work together," Jaguar interjected, launching into the same bullshit explanation he apparently thought anyone would believe.

"I was...she was..." Ragnar faltered briefly before continuing, "I was having an argument with Verity, okay? I was telling her to choose one of you."

Wow. Ragnar was such a liar.

I folded my arms across my chest and leaned back in my chair, shaking my head at him in disapproval.

I noticed his jaw tighten, and he seemed to glance at me out of the corner of his eye, but he deliberately avoided addressing me.

"You? That’s all you guys were talking about?" Gigi questioned.

"Yes. And there was also a woman, an Alpha’s daughter."

Oh, Ragnar was clever. He was already steering the conversation in a completely different direction.

"What other woman? And what Alpha’s daughter?" Gigi pressed, her entire air of nonchalance flying right out the window.

Ragnar certainly knew how to get a rise out of people.

At the same time, Jaguar and Theodore turned toward me, and I managed a faint, broken smile.

They started walking in my direction, which was honestly quite awkward because they couldn’t exactly speak to me the way they wanted in front of Gigi and Ragnar before.

Now we did not have to be so hush-hush about everything.

"An Alpha’s daughter, Brenda. She was... she wanted to spend some time with me," Ragnar explained.

"Doesn’t she know you’re engaged?" Gigi hissed, letting out an irritated grunt.

"Um, I... Verity reminded her. That’s actually where the whole issue started. Verity told her I have a fiancée."

I bet Ragnar was having a hard time lying with me sitting right there, knowing the truth and judging the hell out of him.

But now I had my own mess to deal with because both my mates were standing beside my desk, watching me expectantly.

"It’s true," I confirmed. "I was... I was really anxious because Ragnar told me not to communicate with either of you until I’d made a decision."

Well, now it was my turn to lie.

Gigi turned to look at me, and when I glanced toward Ragnar, I found him wearing the exact same disapproving expression I’d given him earlier.

Oh, he was doing that deliberately, reminding me of how I’d behaved while he’d been spinning his lies.

I paused, biting my tongue.

Coming up with a convincing story wasn’t easy with Ragnar watching me like that.

He, on the other hand, seemed to have mastered the art of lying because even under my judgmental stare, he hadn’t missed a beat.

"Then Verity got very upset and decided to flirt with the royal beta of the pack," Ragnar announced.

Ragnar was such a bitch.

The accusation immediately drew everyone’s attention to him before their heads snapped back toward me.

I could only stare at Jaguar and Theodore, my eyes practically bulging out of their sockets.

"And then she tripped, and somehow the two of them ended up rolling into the water. That’s when the royal beta’s mate found out he’d been flirting with someone else. She came over and caused quite a scene, and I practically got into a fight with Verity because, you know, she was flirting with another man when she should’ve been thinking about choosing one of you."

Ragnar delivered the entire explanation in one go, piling on one shameless accusation after another.

And the worst part?

Some of it was true.

Not all of it, though. He’d conveniently left out the part where he’d gotten so close to me himself.

Of course, he’d saved his own fucking giant ass and landed my tushy in trouble instead.

"But, well, I guess Verity was just angry, and I’m sure she won’t do anything like that again," Ragnar remarked, flashing me a sarcastic smile. "Right, Verity? You’ll be a good girl, won’t you?"

I didn’t know why, but something about the way he said those words made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

I simply nodded before lowering my head.

"Good, good girl," Ragnar murmured in a deep, husky voice, his eyes fixed on me without so much as a blink.
