Chapter 304: Hospital Choice
That night, while video calling with He Hanshi, Shi Lan couldn’t help but tease him, "Now that another S-level female has appeared, I bet no one is bothering you anymore, right?"
What Shi Lan found hilarious was that He Hanshi had actually gotten jealous over something like this.
He had told her that males often sent him private messages or asked him about her.
He felt those males were completely clueless. He was a good Admiral, willing to uphold his duty and diligently protect the Border Defense Star, but he wasn’t so magnanimous that he would share his own wife.
Hearing her teasing, He Hanshi wasn’t embarrassed or annoyed. Instead, a rare look of smug pride appeared on his face. "So what if they bother me? My wife definitely isn’t interested in them."
"Right, Lanlan?"
He asked in a low voice, his gentle, warm blue eyes gazing at her from afar through the chip, as if he were right there, looking into her eyes.
Shi Lan always found it a bit difficult to meet his gaze. He Hanshi’s eyes usually looked cold and aloof, but when his expression softened, they filled with a deep, forthright, and scorching affection.
She was completely powerless against it.
Fighting the urge to cover her blushing cheeks, she nodded. "Of course. I’ve said it before, having the five of you is enough. There won’t be any other males."
"You’re the best, Lanlan."
The corners of He Hanshi’s lips curved up, his smile warm and melting.
After chatting about that for a moment, He Hanshi added, "It seems the Insect Clan incident on the Capital Star was indeed related to the Bai Family. Bai Rao must have obtained one of those Energy Balls, which is what attracted the Insect Clan."
He Hanshi remembered from Shi Lan’s file that she used to be F-level. He suspected her original Level was real, but so was her upgrade. ’She must have absorbed an Energy Ball to change so drastically.’
A special energy that could instantly raise someone’s Spiritual Power Level to S was truly incredible. No wonder the Insect Mother was constantly searching for it.
He couldn’t help but feel relieved. ’It’s a good thing Lanlan and Bai Rao took them. The Insect Mother has already gotten one Energy Ball; we can’t let it get any more.’
A thoughtful look crossed He Hanshi’s face. Seeing his worry, Shi Lan comforted him, "He Hanshi, you have to believe in yourself. Besides, the most troublesome thing for humans facing the Insect Clan is spiritual power collapse. But now you have me. I’ll always be here."
She paused. "By the way, could I come to the Border Defense Star to be a Military Doctor? I won’t reveal my ability to treat spiritual power collapse to outsiders, but I can help treat your troops. It would also be a great help for improving my own spiritual power."
"No!"
He Hanshi blurted out, his tone uncharacteristically stern.
Perhaps sensing his words were too harsh, he quickly softened his tone and explained patiently, "Lanlan, the Border Defense Star isn’t as peaceful as you think right now. The Insect Clan’s activity has increased recently. Other planets near the Garbage Star are constantly under attack. As an Admiral, I often have to lead teams out, so I can’t protect you."
"Besides, the Border Defense Star is very cold. It’s always snowing. You’d definitely freeze if you came here."
Shi Lan frowned slightly. "He Hanshi, I’m not as weak as you think, and I don’t need you to protect me all the time. As for the cold, that’s even less of a problem. I have plenty of Red Crystals to keep me warm."
The atmosphere grew a bit tense. She stared at He Hanshi’s still-furrowed brow and spoke again. "Have you forgotten? I’m the one who survived on the Garbage Star all by myself!"
As she spoke, her voice held a hint of pride. Her eyes were bright and full of life.
He Hanshi gazed into those almond-shaped eyes, which shone like brilliant sunlight, and his stern expression instantly crumbled.
He sighed helplessly. "Lanlan, this is no small matter. It’s not that you can’t come to the Border Defense Star... but how about in two months? Wait until the Insect Clan’s unusual movements aren’t so frequent, and then I’ll have you come over. Okay?"
"Alright."
Shi Lan nodded hesitantly.
However, plans rarely keep up with reality. She would end up going to the Border Defense Star much earlier than expected.
Since she couldn’t go to the Border Defense Star for the time being, Shi Lan shifted her focus back to monitoring the construction progress and looking for a job.
Other than treating He Hanshi and the others, she had no experience treating anyone else. To be a better Military Doctor on the Border Defense Star, she wanted to find a medical job on the Capital Star first to gain some experience.
As an S-level female, Doctor Zheng’s hospital had previously offered her a high-paying position. But Shi Lan didn’t like going back to those who had already rejected her. Besides, Ye Ming had told her that Doctor Zheng’s hospital wasn’t very good, and he also revealed how they had leaked information about their collapse values last time.
Only then did Shi Lan realize so much had happened during the time she was back on Yaoxing. Fortunately, she had already treated a significant portion of their collapse values by then, which helped them avoid a high-risk situation.
Thinking of this, she still felt a lingering fear. Recalling the fates of the men in the book, she was grateful she had chosen to step up and help.
’No wonder they all died young in the book. It turns out someone with malicious intent was pulling strings behind the scenes.’
She couldn’t help but hug Ye Ming tightly, her eyes reddening with lingering fear. "I’m so glad you’re all okay."
Ye Ming heard the hoarseness in her voice. He hadn’t expected that telling her these things would upset her so much. He hugged her back in a bit of a panic, patting her back soothingly with his large hand and coaxing her in a soft voice, "Don’t cry, Lanlan. It’s okay, it’s okay. Thanks to you, we were incredibly lucky, and it’s all in the past now."
"Besides, think about it. Our Spiritual Power Levels are so high. How could we be bullied by some nobodies?"
"That’s not it."
Tears streamed down Shi Lan’s face as she buried it in Ye Ming’s chest.
’Their Spiritual Power Levels were just as high in the book, but didn’t they all still die?’
At a loss, Ye Ming held her and comforted her for a long time. Finally, he held her close and repeatedly placed small kisses on her eyes, kissing away her tears, until Shi Lan was too embarrassed to keep crying.
After this incident, Ye Ming wouldn’t dare mention Doctor Zheng again. But he knew Shi Lan wanted to find a job as a doctor. With her high Spiritual Power Level, a lesser hospital wouldn’t be worthy of her, so he recommended the Dean.
"Lanlan, the Dean asked me about you. She has her own private medical team and is always looking to recruit exceptional females. You’re her top choice right now."
"You should check it out. Her medical team is excellent, the atmosphere is great, and the facilities are state-of-the-art. They even travel around the universe to treat patients sometimes."
Hearing Ye Ming mention the Dean, Shi Lan was momentarily confused, not realizing who he was talking about. Then it dawned on her that he meant his mother.
"The Dean has a medical team?"
Ye Ming nodded. "Mhm, she founded the team before she became the Dean. But her team doesn’t prioritize numbers, only excellence."
Shi Lan felt a little self-conscious. "In that case, since I don’t have any experience, wouldn’t I be a bad fit?"
"Not at all."
He shook his head without hesitation. "She said you’re her top choice right now."
"Okay, then I’ll give it a try."
Shi Lan made up her mind, but then she asked uncertainly, "So when I see her, what should I call her? The Dean... or Mother?"
