Chapter 1280 - 1294: The Young Madam in a Deeply Hidden Mansion
The taxi drivers in the Imperial City are all chatterboxes, and Wang Xia had long gotten used to it. However, the driver’s words earlier piqued her interest.
"So, driver, what do you think I do for a living?"
The driver glanced at her again through the rearview mirror, smiling affably, "You, ah, you’re dressed appropriately and have a nice demeanor, but you don’t seem like a company white-collar worker."
Wang Xia’s heart sank a little, and she instinctively glanced at her own hands. They had once been thin and smooth, but after long exposure to detergent, they had become old and worn. The skin around her nails had cracked, with the most severe fingers covered in medical tape.
She smiled a bit stiffly, "Why?"
The driver looked at the road and continued, "What else could it be? Just looking at your face. Those bone spirits from companies have long practiced to be competent and assertive. Someone with a face like yours seems to have been living in luxury for a long time. If you weren’t taking a taxi, you’d look more like a Young Madam from a wealthy family. If you force me to say what job you do, I’d guess you work in a government office. Am I right?"
After speaking, the driver glanced at her again through the rearview mirror, as if waiting for her confirmation.
Sitting in the back seat, Wang Xia awkwardly hid her hands under her bag and smiled, "Driver, you really have sharp eyes."
Upon receiving affirmation, the driver felt a bit smug, and kept talking non-stop all the way. But Wang Xia couldn’t process a single word, only hearing the driver’s phrase that she looked more like a Young Madam from a wealthy family.
See, even a taxi driver can tell. She was born to be an heiress, yet fate teased her, leaving her working as a dishwasher in a restaurant kitchen, surviving on odd jobs.
She doesn’t want this kind of life; this life shouldn’t belong to her.
Upon arriving at the Imperial City train station, Wang Xia paid and rushed into the waiting hall.
On her way here, she had been constantly indecisive, causing a delay in the pickup time. But after talking with the driver all this way, she had made up her mind; she couldn’t miss the opportunity again.
Now that the train had been in the station for over ten minutes, she wondered if that person would be angry due to her tardiness.
While pondering this, a figure suddenly appeared in her sight.
The man wasn’t wearing a military uniform; instead, he wore dark slacks and a white shirt, with the shirt button meticulously fastened up to the collar.
His freshly cut hair paired with this outfit looked somewhat out of place.
He wasn’t carrying much luggage, just a military backpack slung over his back.
At this moment, the man was holding a phone in his hand, but showed no intention of making a call, stretching his neck to look around.
As Wang Xia was about to approach the man, he saw her too, gripping the strap of his backpack and jogging a few steps toward her. Despite being in his early thirties, he appeared less composed than a young man in his twenties.
"Wang Xia, you’re here! Actually, if you gave me your address, I could have come directly to find you, instead of making you take a trip." The man spoke, with the tips of his ears slightly red, unsure if it was from the run earlier or something else.
Wang Xia also sported a smiling face, "You’ve come all this way to see me, so of course I need to pick you up. But the traffic here in the Imperial City is awful, it was jammed for ages. Have you been waiting long? Did you get impatient?"
As Wang Xia spoke, she reached out to take the backpack from him—seeing a man in his thirties in formal attire carrying a backpack seemed off no matter how she looked at it.
