Four Split Personalities

Chapter 989 - 455: Casual Conversation_2

After he finished speaking, he looked seemingly composedly at the young man opposite him, who was the Commander of the united forces. However, he couldn’t find any displeasure or forced magnanimity on the young man’s face. The expression of the Black Vatican Priest was light and breezy; he even nodded slightly, as if he had merely voiced a fact as plain as "a day has twenty-four hours" or "people die when they are killed."

This left Ger a bit stunned. Even though he was well aware that his statement was the truth, he had never expected that the young Commander in front of him, regardless of anything else, could completely accept it. After all, even as a mere Priest, this was someone who had saved the better half of Misha County from catastrophe—a Priest who should not be as unperturbed as he was now...

"I know that."

Motan rubbed his nose and nodded, "’I’ am just a very ordinary person, after all."

"No, you’re not ordinary at all. I just meant that your talent in Divine Arts was somewhat disappointing."

Ger chuckled dryly, putting aside the emotional and logical appeals he had prepared, and reluctantly summed up before he was ready, "Personally, I think you’re better suited to the Justice Sect than the Church of the Dawn. We often deal with wars, which would allow you to fully demonstrate your talents. Trust me, if you join the Justice Sect, it won’t take many years for you to become famous across the continent!"

Motan scratched his cheek and said with a sheepish smile, "Actually, I don’t really want to be famous all over the continent. Living an ordinary life is quite nice."

"Exactly! So you just need to join... uh?"

Ger’s sales pitch came to an abrupt stop a second later, and then he looked at Motan incredulously, "What did you say?"

"Uh, I said that living ordinarily is quite nice."

"You don’t want to become famous and well-known?"

"Not really..."

"You don’t want to prove yourself to the world?"

"Not really..."

"You don’t want to seize your youth and achieve great things?"

"Still not really..."

"Where is your ambition?!"

Ger was nearly frantic, puffing up his beard and glaring as he said, "You shouldn’t settle for mediocrity!"

Motan waved his hands repeatedly, "No, no, no, I am content. I’m content."

This was absolutely his honest feeling; whenever his current persona reflected on the tumultuous and extraordinary feats accomplished by his other two personas, his present self as ’Black Vatican’ felt extraordinarily weary and just wanted a disaster-free existence of idle waiting.

Perhaps any normal young person wouldn’t think this way, but Motan under the ’Absolute Neutrality’ persona, although not muted by time, had been rounded out by the other two-thirds of his life.

Simply put, he felt he had had enough of a tumultuous life, had been enough of a troublemaker, and had been enough of a worry for others. So why not seize this moment to relax and take it easy?

Was the situation in the Violet Empire not chaotic enough? Or was the presence of Apocalypse not prominent enough?

Thinking about those messy matters made Motan’s head spin, and he just wanted to be a normal onlooker peacefully. If Yu Chen could join him in that, it would be even better.

His life was already quite thrilling!

And our Knight Ger was utterly disheveled by now...

"Black Vatican Priest!"

He tried one last struggle, holding onto a sliver of hope, "The Pope himself will definitely value you highly. Just by joining the Justice Sect, you could start from a position higher than mine, as an Archbishop, and might even be given command of a small-scale Knight Order along with the treatment reserved for God’s Chosen. Your status will absolutely not be inferior to Lady Forget Language! I know you both have mutual affection, but she’s a saintess—even a newly appointed practicing one holds a much higher status in our Sect, don’t you think this issue is quite pragmatic!"

Motan was stunned for a moment, then let out a long sigh and smiled, "Lord Ger, what you just said really speaks to my heart, you know my biggest dream back in the day was..."

Ger’s eyes lit up, cursing himself for not bringing up Forget Language sooner.

Then...

Motan smacked his lips, "One of my biggest dreams back in the day was to be a kept man."

Clang!

An advanced-stage Holy Knight fell right off his horse, landing face-first into the dirt and glaring up at Motan with a ’are you kidding me’ expression.

"Just kidding~"

Motan blinked and shrugged, "Ultimately, I just don’t want to change my beliefs, even if the goddess doesn’t mind, I don’t want to leave the Church of the Dawn."

[Good, you know what’s good for you.]

"?"

Motan’s smile immediately stiffened, then he forcefully convinced himself that what he had just heard was an illusion.

Truthfully, if he were a native NPC born and bred in The Realm of Innocence, Ger’s words might have actually swayed him to join the Justice Sect just to be on the same level with someone.

Being a kept man... Motan indeed had said that, but it wasn’t something he meant in his current state.

However, neither Motan nor Yu Chen were natives of this world, and though the former had already vaguely sensed that The Realm of Innocence might be more than just a mere game, the disparity of dimensions was there, and he naturally didn’t need to worry too much about his identity or status in the game.

All in all, Ger was never truly equipped to persuade Motan from the start, so failing to recruit him was within expectation.

"Haha, well, since the Holy Church Union is one family, just give a shout if you need anything. I do have some influence over at the Justice Sect, as long as it’s nothing crooked... um, as long as it isn’t murder or arson, we can discuss it."

Seeing that Motan was firm in his stance, Ger didn’t push further, joking seriously for a moment before changing the subject. He looked towards the sky where the "Kirov" relentlessly poured justice upon the mutants and suddenly asked Motan, "Do you think, if there really is a mastermind behind this disaster, they might have already left this place?"

Because the regional world task "Finding the Source of the Plague" had not failed, Motan, who had discussed similar tasks on forums before, was 90% sure that the ’source of calamity’ hadn’t left Misha County yet. However, he did not voice his judgment directly, instead shaking his head ambiguously, "I’m not sure, Lord Ger, you know I’m just a common priest with little exposure."

Having briefly investigated Motan, Ger nodded slightly, knowing that the other was telling the truth. So, he straightforwardly said, "I think they must have already left because if there really was a Necromancer hiding behind the scenes, now they could easily dispatch a low-rank bone eagle or a gargoyle to bring down the ’Kirov,’ there’s no need to let their army get blown up... blown up to such a miserable state..."

Motan found this analysis logically sound and nodded in agreement, then began pondering under what circumstances the hidden ’source of calamity’ in Misha County would watch their own undead creatures being slaughtered without any action.

Had the mastermind achieved their goal? Or did they have a trump card that could turn the tables? Or maybe they just weren’t paying attention to this matter at all? Or perhaps they were simply a lunatic?

All possibilities... yet all seemed unlikely...

"Heard you came from the Violet Empire."

Ger, not noticing that Motan was lost in thought, mused, "My hometown is over there too; guess we’re kind of fated, huh."

Motan immediately snapped out of his thought process, nodding vigorously, "Right? What a coincidence~"

The two casually chatted against the backdrop of the distant, drum-like booms and the continuous glow of fire.

Amidst their light-hearted conversation, the unceasingly firing "Kirov" had depleted most of its stock, wiping out over a thousand mutants.
