Chapter 455: Awake?
It was not just Wu Sheng. The deeds of every person involved in the rescue would be neither erased nor forgotten.
There were many commendations for the group, but Wu Sheng, as the one in charge, had made an indispensable contribution.
Wu Sheng had returned severely injured, his fate unknown. From the highest levels to the lowest, whether they could visit his hospital room or not, everyone was heartbroken.
While Su Li and Wu Qihua had no time or energy to follow the news, focusing everything they had on Wu Sheng, reports of his heroic deeds were broadcast one after another.
Wu Sheng’s previously unknown acts of valor were being reported, along with the news that he was gravely injured while saving a child in the final moments.
Wu Sheng needed quiet to recuperate, so no reporters or media were allowed into the hospital to conduct interviews or take photos. Yet, his well-being captivated the hearts of everyone who saw or heard the news.
The people of Wucheng, in particular, spontaneously organized vigils to pray for Wu Sheng’s recovery.
While they prayed for Wu Sheng in Wucheng, people in the Imperial City who saw the reports began to come to the hospital of their own accord to visit him.
Hundreds of people came every day. Although they couldn’t enter his room to see him, they all expressed their gratitude in various ways, hoping he would wake up and recover soon.
These ordinary people had not forgotten Wu Sheng’s contributions, to say nothing of his own organization.
They hadn’t forgotten Wu Sheng. They hadn’t forgotten anyone.
On Wednesday, the hospital room received its most special thanks yet.
The chairman of the corporation, various directors, and other leaders and colleagues came with flowers to see Wu Sheng, solemnly thanking him at his bedside.
Wa Wa Lian, Zhou Ming, and the others watched the scene, their eyes turning red as they looked at Wu Sheng on the bed.
Su Li and Wu Qihua stood outside the hospital room, watching it all. Their eyes were red, but filled with pride.
’Wu Sheng, you have to wake up. Wake up and see your colleagues, see everyone who is so worried sick about you.’
After seeing Wu Sheng, the chairman kindly shook Wu Qihua’s hand and told her not to worry.
Wu Qihua pulled over Su Li, who was standing behind her with no intention of showing herself, and solemnly introduced her to everyone.
"This is Wu Sheng’s fiancée."
For Wu Qihua to introduce Su Li with such gravity meant she had already accepted her as the Wu Family’s daughter-in-law.
Su Li took a deep breath, smiled, and swallowed the lump in her throat. She stood half a step behind Wu Qihua, thanking every person who had come to see Wu Sheng.
After seeing Wu Sheng, all the visiting colleagues came one by one to console Wu Qihua and Su Li. In return, Wu Qihua and Su Li bowed deeply.
Wa Wa Lian Zhou Ming was the last to say goodbye. "Auntie, Sister-in-law, I’ll come see the Chief again in a couple of days."
"Yes. We’ll let you know the moment Wu Sheng wakes up."
Wu Qihua looked at Wa Wa Lian with an affectionate gaze.
Wa Wa Lian glanced back at Wu Sheng and nodded emphatically. "Okay. The Chief has been sleeping for so many days, it’s about time for him to wake up."
He was filled with expectation and hope. He believed that Wu Sheng would wake up soon and continue toward his future of hope and infinite possibilities.
No matter how Wu Sheng’s job title changed, he would still be the youngest and most promising.
’There are positions some people can never reach in their entire lives, but I believe the Chief will get there.’
As Wu Qihua and Su Li spoke with Wa Wa Lian, they didn’t notice Bai Xinyue and Ye Xilan watching them from a distance, their gazes ghostly and filled with jealous hatred.
Bai Xinyue and Ye Xilan had heard a little bit of news in advance.
Although Ye Xilan was happy about it and wanted to be there, she knew it was impossible, so she remained relatively calm.
But Bai Xinyue was not the same. She wasn’t one to do nothing.
’After all the preparations I made, how could I let this opportunity pass?’
She had gotten herself ready early, planning to make an opportune appearance. She wanted the chairman and everyone else to see her, remember her great contribution, and successfully associate her name with Wu Sheng’s.
She had everything prepared and was just about to show herself when, to her dismay, Wu Qihua pulled Su Li forward and solemnly introduced her as Wu Sheng’s fiancée.
Bai Xinyue froze, pulling back the foot she had already started to step forward with.
With Su Li there as the fiancée, it would be inappropriate for her to go out.
Watching the backs of Wu Qihua and Su Li, Bai Xinyue nearly ground her teeth to dust.
’I should have been the one doing all of that!’
Bai Xinyue was filled with hatred, and so was Ye Xilan, who was with her.
Of course, the position *she* wanted to be in was Wu Qihua’s.
It might have been better if she hadn’t come. After seeing it, the envy, jealousy, and hatred in her heart were simply unstoppable.
And with Su Li standing next to Wu Qihua, it was even more frustrating.
"Some fiancée she is! How is someone like that worthy!"
Ye Xilan said hatefully. Bai Xinyue’s clenched fists tightened, and she finally turned and walked away.
An uncontrollable hostility burned in her eyes.
Time flew, and it was soon time for Wu Sheng’s stitches to be removed.
The surgery had been long, but removing the stitches was quick.
"Alright. Be careful not to put any pressure on the wound."
The doctor left after giving his instructions. Wu Qihua had to go to work, so she left as well.
Only Wu Sheng and Su Li were left in the room.
Su Li sat by the bed, stroking Wu Sheng’s hand as she let out a breath.
"Wu Sheng, the stitches are out now. You’ve been asleep for so many days, you’ve more than made up for all the sleep you lost. It’s time to wake up."
She picked up his hand and massaged it. "You’re the most ticklish person I know. If you don’t wake up, I’m going to start tickling you."
She lightly tickled his palm a few times. When Wu Sheng didn’t break into laughter like he always did, the light in her eyes dimmed for a moment.
"Wu Sheng, please wake up. I’m scared... I can’t sleep at night. I don’t dare to. The moment I fall asleep, I dream of you."
"I’m so tired... and I’m in pain. My stomach hurts... Didn’t you tell me to let you know whenever I was hurting? I’m telling you now. So if you’re a man of your word, you’ll wake up."
Only when she was alone with Wu Sheng did Su Li dare to speak her heart.
But Wu Sheng remained unresponsive...
Her gaze dimmed, but Su Li forced herself to get up. She picked up the thermos to get some water, but before she reached the door, there was a knock.
Then, Bai Xinyue and her "good friend" appeared before Su Li again.
This "good friend" was Guan Dekuan, the very one who had previously called Su Li shameless and said she’d grown up drinking from the river.
Su Li’s brow furrowed. When Guan Dekuan saw Su Li, her brow furrowed as well.
"So it’s you. No wonder Xinyue was hesitating to come see Mr. Wu," Guan Dekuan said, stomping her foot.
"You think you can be shameless just because Xinyue is good-natured, don’t you? Xinyue and Mr. Wu are a match made in heaven! If I were you, I would’ve left long ago to let them be together. How can you be so thick-skinned as to just hang around..."
"Get out." Su Li closed her eyes, pointed to the door, and ordered her to leave, unable to stand the woman’s grating voice.
"Who do you think you are, telling me to get out? If anyone’s getting out, it’s a shameless person like you!" Guan Dekuan was furious. She put her hands on her hips, stepped forward, and pointed at Su Li as she screeched, "Get out! You get the hell out!"
"Who did you just tell to get out?" The words had barely left her mouth when a voice shot back a question.
"Su Li, of course!" Guan Dekuan answered instantly. After she did, she suddenly realized something was wrong. "Who’s talking?"
Su Li whipped around.
