Chapter 459: Questioning
Wu Sheng was silent the entire way back after seeing Little Hei, his eyes dark and heavy.
"He’ll wake up, and he’ll get better. Didn’t the doctor say his recovery is going well? The bruising in his head is also dissipating. Don’t worry."
Su Li supported Wu Sheng by the arm and spoke softly.
Wu Sheng looked at Su Li and nodded. "Mm."
He walked very slowly. After a moment, he suddenly asked, "Do you know which room Bai Xinyue is in?"
Su Li froze for a second. ’Why is he suddenly asking about Bai Xinyue?’
"I think she’s on the floor below. Why?"
Wu Sheng didn’t answer right away.
When Su Li had told him what happened, she kept it brief and didn’t go into detail about what Bai Xinyue had been doing recently. However, after Su Li left, Wu Qihua had told him everything.
When he heard that Bai Xinyue was parading around the claim that she’d gone blind saving him, saying that they were the ones who were a match made in heaven, and even telling Su Li to leave so they could be together, Wu Sheng’s eyes filled with a cold rage.
The moment he woke up, he had heard someone screaming for Su Li to get out, so he had a general idea of the situation. But he never imagined it would be this disgusting.
He seriously felt like he was going to puke.
It didn’t take much digging to find out everything Su Li had been through recently.
Wu Sheng also found out how Ye Xilan had been running around causing trouble, championing Bai Xinyue’s cause and making things difficult for Su Li.
Wu Sheng was truly impressed by Ye Xilan; he simply couldn’t comprehend her thought process or how she could be so idiotic.
And then there was Bai Xinyue. He clearly felt nothing but disgust for her—they were mere acquaintances—yet she acted as if they were profoundly devoted, even trying to tie her blindness to him.
How could Wu Sheng possibly swallow this insult? After seeing Little Hei, he could no longer hold it in.
As Wu Sheng thought this, he paused before replying.
"I’m sick of hearing that bullshit about her going blind to save me. I want to go ask her exactly how she ’saved’ me and tell her to shut up."
Su Li nodded. "Oh, I see."
Thinking of all the times she’d been disgusted by them recently, Su Li was at a loss for words.
She knew Bai Xinyue was calculating, but she never thought she would dare to twist the truth so blatantly. With that level of scheming, she could have held her own in a palace drama.
"Let’s go. We’ll go have a word with her."
Since Wu Sheng had spoken, Su Li had no objections.
Su Li helped Wu Sheng slowly make his way downstairs. Once they reached the floor where Bai Xinyue was staying, they asked a nurse for her room number.
Bai Xinyue was just about to leave her room when she suddenly heard Wu Sheng’s voice. Remembering the incident at noon, she froze for an instant.
But the next second, she relaxed.
’No matter what, if Wu Sheng is coming to see me, I can’t let him make the trip for nothing.’
A dark gleam flashed in Bai Xinyue’s eyes, and she immediately stripped off her thick outer clothes...
Out in the hallway, once they had Bai Xinyue’s room number, Wu Sheng and Su Li headed over.
When they reached the door, they knocked. Hearing a "come in" from inside, Su Li opened the door.
When the scene inside the room came into view, the corner of Su Li’s mouth couldn’t help but twitch.
Bai Xinyue was wearing a thin, white set of pajamas, standing by the hospital bed and gazing out the window, striking a classic 45-degree-angle pose of melancholy.
Her dark hair was draped over her shoulders, and combined with her flimsy pajamas, she was truly a picture of pitiable beauty.
Hearing the door open, she slowly turned around. Her pale face, along with the gauze wrapped around her eyes, made her look even more pitiful and helpless.
One look was all it took for Su Li to know that Bai Xinyue had prepared for this.
Seeing how thoroughly Bai Xinyue had prepared, Su Li felt like she was intruding on a private performance.
’She can really stand the cold...’ The inappropriate thought flashed through Su Li’s mind.
While she hesitated, Wu Sheng stepped into the room first.
Su Li was about to follow when someone grabbed her hand.
Su Li turned to see a woman in her thirties. It seemed to be Bai Xinyue’s caregiver; now that Bai Xinyue was hospitalized, the woman had come from home to the hospital to continue looking after her.
In that brief delay, Bai Xinyue spoke first.
"Wu Sheng." The way Bai Xinyue called his name was clear and cold, yet laced with a hint of resentment. It was nothing short of melodramatic.
Just as Su Li expected, Bai Xinyue had indeed prepared, all to display her own frail and pitiful state. Unfortunately for her, she had no idea that Wu Sheng wasn’t receiving the signal at all.
"I came here today to ask you one thing: how exactly did you save me?"
Wu Sheng entered the room but stopped just inside the doorway. He got straight to the point.
Bai Xinyue’s face paled. "Did you hear what everyone’s been saying? Wu Sheng, I already told them to stop talking about it so it wouldn’t put you in a difficult position. I never wanted to use this to force you to accept me..."
Bai Xinyue was playing the part of the understanding and aggrieved martyr to a T.
But Wu Sheng just sneered. "I asked you how you saved me. Answer the question I asked. Don’t go off on tangents."
Before Bai Xinyue could even answer, Wu Sheng let out another scornful laugh.
"You? Save me? If you had really saved me, you would have died in that mudslide long ago. How could you possibly be standing here perfectly fine, with just one blind eye?"
Yes, Wu Sheng had been injured suddenly and passed out quickly, but his head wasn’t scrambled.
The situation was urgent, and there was no time to react to anything, but his last impression was of Bai Xinyue just screaming, "Don’t!"
"Bai Xinyue, do you even know what it means to save someone?"
Once Wu Sheng started talking, he had no intention of stopping.
"What I did for Little Hei, *that’s* saving someone. You think shouting ’Don’t!’ counts as saving someone? Don’t be ridiculous."
Bai Xinyue’s face was deathly pale. She never expected Wu Sheng to be so sharp, his words so venomous.
Tears streamed down her face before she could even speak. "You... Wu Sheng..."
Wiping her tears, Bai Xinyue took a deep breath and replied.
"Yes, I wasn’t strong enough to save someone the way you did. But you can’t deny the fact that I *wanted* to save you! It was when I reached out to pull you that my eye..."
Bai Xinyue was so choked with sobs she couldn’t finish her sentence. It was a truly miserable sight.
"So that’s what you call getting injured to save me?" Wu Sheng’s intuition screamed that it was a lie. Something felt very wrong.
"I remember hearing a bloodcurdling scream right as I fell. Wasn’t that when your eye got hurt?"
He had been busy saving Little Hei and had no time to focus on Bai Xinyue, but he hadn’t forgotten her shrill, painful scream.
Bai Xinyue’s heart sank. Tears covered her face, and she looked as if she could barely stand.
"Wu Sheng, you... How could you think of me like that? It’s my fault. I loved the wrong person. I loved the wrong person..."
Bai Xinyue was once again sobbing uncontrollably.
Wu Sheng’s face was as dark as thunder. "Let’s stick to the facts. What’s the point of bringing up all this other nonsense? If you have a clear conscience, then stop changing the subject."
Hearing this, the caregiver outside—the one holding Su Li back to keep her from disturbing Wu Sheng and Bai Xinyue—couldn’t listen anymore.
"I can’t listen to this anymore! Wu Sheng, how can you be so cruel? Our Miss has given you her whole heart! She went blind in one eye for you, and you still talk to her like this? You’re just trying to get rid of her. It’s one thing not to acknowledge it, but to slander our Miss like this? You’re not human!"
The caregiver rushed in, helped Bai Xinyue up, and roared at Wu Sheng, absolutely furious.
