Chapter 451: They Are a Match Made in Heaven
Su Li heard every word.
She wasn’t deaf. How could she not hear them?
And she certainly couldn’t ignore Bai Xinyue, who came to "report in" and visit Wu Sheng three or four times a day.
Su Li paid them no mind. She just watched over Wu Sheng, waiting for him to wake up.
As long as Wu Sheng woke up, what did it matter if what Bai Xinyue said was true? So what if she’d gone blind in one eye to save him and was now trying to morally blackmail them, to make Wu Sheng leave Su Li for her?
As long as Wu Sheng woke up, Su Li was willing to face any of it.
As long as Wu Sheng woke up, nothing was a problem.
The only condition was that Wu Sheng had to wake up.
If Wu Sheng didn’t wake, she couldn’t be bothered to deal with any of the rumors, as long as no one caused a scene in front of her.
After he was transferred to a regular ward, all the colleagues who had been on the mission with Wu Sheng returned.
The first thing they did after getting back, washing up, and getting cleaned up was come to see Wu Sheng.
They didn’t say much. One by one, they took turns approaching Wu Sheng’s bed, looked at him for a long moment, and then left.
Silence spoke louder than words. It wasn’t about talking; it was about the sincerity of their presence.
After seeing Wu Sheng, they also went to see Little Hei, the child Wu Sheng had risked his life to save.
But no one went to see Bai Xinyue.
No matter how beautifully Bai Xinyue spun her story with Wu Sheng for outsiders and her friends, the men who had just returned from the brink of death weren’t buying it. They had eaten Su Li’s steamed buns, thanked their "sister-in-law," and witnessed for themselves how Wu Sheng treated Bai Xinyue. To them, she was a non-factor.
Forget being grateful to Bai Xinyue; it was polite enough of them not to storm in and beat her up.
They had repeatedly stressed that no one was allowed to go up the mountain. No one had disobeyed; everyone had followed the orders.
So why was it that this pampered young lady, Bai Xinyue, had decided not to listen? She had even dragged a child up with her.
It was because they went up the mountain that both Little Hei and Wu Sheng’s lives were now hanging by a thread.
In their eyes, even if Bai Xinyue had gone blind in both eyes, not just one, it wouldn’t be enough to quell their anger.
But no matter what they thought privately, they didn’t show any of it publicly.
However, now that they were back, they weren’t back for nothing.
The group stayed for half an hour. No matter how much they wanted to stay, they all left and returned to their posts.
While Wu Sheng fought for his life in the hospital, they had to do their jobs even better than when he was around. They had to do what needed to be done.
Before he left, Wa Wa Lian spoke with Su Li for a moment.
His first words were, "I’m sorry, ma’am. I should have stayed by the chief’s side. I didn’t do my job."
Wa Wa Lian hadn’t been chubby to begin with, but now he was even thinner.
"Don’t blame yourself. You know Wu Sheng wouldn’t want this. If you keep talking like this and lose any more weight, Wu Sheng will chew you out when he wakes up."
Su Li said, trying to console him.
Hearing this, Wa Wa Lian let out a breath. "You’re right, ma’am. The chief wouldn’t just chew me out, he’d probably kick me a couple of times too."
His expression turned serious. "Ma’am, don’t you worry. Just take care of the chief. We’ll handle everything else."
Su Li nodded. "Okay."
Wa Wa Lian took one last, long look at Wu Sheng, then turned and left.
At the door, he came face-to-face with Bai Xinyue, who was there to see Wu Sheng. A fierce, murderous glint instantly flashed in his eyes.
When Bai Xinyue saw his expression, her face changed.
She was about to say something, but Wa Wa Lian had already looked away and walked off.
Bai Xinyue didn’t look too pleased when she entered the room. Su Li ignored her completely, acting as if she didn’t exist.
Before Bai Xinyue could say a word, the friend who was helping her walk couldn’t stand it anymore.
She shot Su Li a contemptuous look. "How shameless."
Su Li slowly lifted her gaze, gave the woman a cool glance, and said nothing.
"Tsk tsk... I’ve seen shameless people before, but never like this. Still hanging around here, refusing to leave. Hey, your name is Su Li, right?"
The friend was really just trying to suck up to Bai Xinyue and wanted to teach Su Li a lesson on her behalf.
"Let me tell you something. Miss Bai and Mr. Wu are a match made in heaven. Miss Bai went blind in one eye to save Mr. Wu. Can’t you see that? If you had any decency, wouldn’t you leave on your own?"
Hearing this, Su Li glanced at Wu Sheng and finally spoke.
"You’re too loud. You’re disturbing him."
"And another thing. Your authority seems to have a very wide reach."
At first, the young woman didn’t understand what she meant. When it finally clicked, she was furious.
"What is wrong with you? What did I say that was wrong...?"
Her voice suddenly grew louder, and Bai Xinyue, who had been silent until now, immediately stopped her. "Alright, that’s enough."
The young woman looked indignant, but she obediently shut her mouth.
Bai Xinyue gave Su Li a deep look, then turned and left.
Su Li watched them go and let out a long breath.
She looked at Wu Sheng on the hospital bed. Just as she was about to say something, her brow furrowed, and her hand slowly moved to her stomach.
Wu Qihua, who had gone to get water, came back in and saw her movement. "What’s wrong? Is your stomach hurting?"
"It’s nothing," Su Li answered with a forced smile.
"If it hurts, you have to say so. Go see a doctor," Wu Qihua urged.
Su Li nodded.
If you were to ask Su Li what pain she feared most, it would probably be stomach pain.
Having survived stomach cancer, a stomachache was the one thing she dreaded. She had always been meticulous about taking care of her stomach, but now, the familiar pain was back.
’It’s probably from forcing myself to eat these past two days...’
Su Li stepped out of the ward, walked a few steps, and sat down, waiting for the stomach pain to subside.
She was hugging her stomach, and had only been sitting for a moment when she ran into Tang Yuanxiao and Little Tang Mo.
Two days ago, Tang Yuanxiao had picked up Little Tang Mo. Knowing he couldn’t hide the reason for the visit, Tang Yuanxiao didn’t try, and ended up telling Little Tang Mo everything.
Little Tang Mo had wanted to run to the hospital immediately, but Tang Yuanxiao had held him back forcefully.
After talking him down and getting him to eat something, Tang Yuanxiao finally brought Little Tang Mo over.
Once Little Tang Mo had calmed down, he was no longer in a rush. He went home to pack some of Su Li’s things to bring to her.
He knew Su Li definitely didn’t have time to go home and wouldn’t be going home.
He had even asked Tang Yuanxiao to help bring the folding bed from their house.
Since it was a weekday, Little Tang Mo had been very obedient, going to his classes and only coming to see Wu Sheng after school was out.
Today was the weekend, so Little Tang Mo didn’t have school and Tang Yuanxiao didn’t have class. The two of them had made dumplings together.
They brought the dumplings for Su Li and Wu Qihua, so they could have a hot, home-cooked meal.
"Mom." Little Tang Mo hurried over when he saw Su Li. "Mom, why are you sitting here? Are you not feeling well?"
He could see that her complexion was a bit off.
Tang Yuanxiao took a closer look at Su Li’s face and also felt something was wrong. "Yeah, are you feeling unwell somewhere?"
Just as Su Li was about to answer, another voice cut in, answering for her.
"Feeling unwell? Of course she is. Sick at heart, I’d say."
Ye Xilan scoffed, her arms crossed over her chest. She took a few steps forward, looking from Tang Yuanxiao to Little Tang Mo with a complicated expression on her face.
