Chapter 815 - 784: Bai Lan the Author
After re-entering South Korean writer Bai Lan, this time Bai Lan’s information appeared. The information provided by Liu Haiyu was pretty much the same, and Xu Chunliang strongly suspected he got it from Baidu.
Xu Chunliang didn’t find many suspicious points. By rights, a popular female writer shouldn’t have any designs on him, but her popularity seemed to be limited to the Peninsula.
The next morning, when Xu Chunliang was getting ready to drive to class, he found that all four tires were flat. Xu Chunliang was so frustrated; the tires were slashed. Who did he offend?
Xu Chunliang could only choose to take a cab. At this time, Bai Lan appeared, smiling at Xu Chunliang: "Morning, what a coincidence! You weren’t waiting for me here, were you?"
Xu Chunliang pointed at his car: "Tires were slashed."
Bai Lan glanced at it sympathetically, offering to give him a ride. Xu Chunliang wanted to decline, but Bai Lan insisted she wanted to express her gratitude.
Xu Chunliang couldn’t refuse, so he got into her car. Bai Lan asked for the location, then laughed: "I didn’t expect you to be a top student of Shuimu."
Xu Chunliang couldn’t tell her that he had no connection with Shuimu, and Mo Han had arranged for him to enroll in the Europe Business School, which is actually a fast-track degree program.
While driving, Bai Lan said: "Are you from Capital City?"
Xu Chunliang shook his head: "I’m from Pinghai East Province. I’m just here on a business trip."
Bai Lan remarked: "Dongzhou?"
Xu Chunliang thought it was normal for a foreigner not to have heard of Dongzhou.
Bai Lan said: "Is it the Dongzhou known as Eastern Athens?"
Xu Chunliang said: "You know quite a bit."
Bai Lan smiled: "For my writing, I took some time to study the history and geography of China. Although I’m not proficient, I understand a bit."
Xu Chunliang said: "Are you a writer?"
Bai Lan said: "I’ve written a few novels. I’m here in the capital for a signing event. By the way, can you help me with a small favor?"
Xu Chunliang said: "Writing isn’t my strong suit."
Bai Lan said: "It’s like this, I have a book signing event at the Book Building tomorrow afternoon. Can you come and support?"
Seeing Xu Chunliang hesitate, Bai Lan said: "If you really can’t find the time, it’s okay. It’s mainly my first signing event in Capital City, and I’m worried it might be embarrassing if no one shows up."
Xu Chunliang understood. This was about asking him to show support. Bai Lan was actively trying to establish a relationship with him. In social interactions, one common way to quickly grow closer with others is asking for favors.
Bai Lan’s concern was easy to solve. As long as the organizers offer some payment, there will be no shortage of people queueing up. In our vast country, there’s never a shortage of people; they can follow the supermarket’s free egg giveaway method.
Since Bai Lan made things clear, Xu Chunliang couldn’t refuse and smiled: "Sure, I’ll be there."
Bai Lan said: "I’ll add you on WeChat and send you the signing event location later."
She parked at the school gate, and after Xu Chunliang thanked her, he got out of the car. Just a few steps away, Bai Lan called him again: "Mr. Xu, please wait."
Xu Chunliang stopped. Bai Lan got out, opened the trunk, took out two books, and handed them to him: "These are my works. I hope you find them instructive."
Xu Chunliang nodded: "Sure, I’ll make sure to read your masterpieces."
Bai Lan waved to him and turned away.
Xu Chunliang watched as her car drove away, then looked down at the two books. One was the first volume of the comic "Lady Doctor," and the other was the novel "Korea Rhododendron." When Xu Chunliang looked up, he saw Xiaobai smiling at him from not far away. She had actually been observing Xu Chunliang for quite some time but refrained from approaching due to Bai Lan’s presence.
Xu Chunliang said: "Xiaobai, when did you get here? I didn’t notice."
Gao Xiaobai said: "Your attention was entirely on that beauty, no wonder you didn’t notice the bystanders."
Xu Chunliang laughed, and Gao Xiaobai laughed too: "Xu Chunliang, who is that beauty? She’s quite pretty, like a movie star. I feel like I’ve seen her somewhere."
Xu Chunliang said: "Just a newly acquainted friend."
"Newly acquainted and she’s already giving you a ride to school?"
Xu Chunliang said: "My car broke down, and she kindly gave me a lift."
Gao Xiaobai said: "You must resist temptation; I think that beauty is not simple." Women often perceive things more clearly; they are accustomed to seeing through appearances to the essence.
Xu Chunliang smiled: "Thanks for the reminder."
Gao Xiaobai glanced at the book in his hand: "Wow, you like comics too."
Xu Chunliang said: "She gave these to me; she’s a writer."
Gao Xiaobai took a book from him and glanced through it, surprised: "Bai Lan? It’s Bai Lan?"
Xu Chunliang nodded. Judging by Gao Xiaobai’s reaction, she seemed familiar with Bai Lan’s name.
The book in Gao Xiaobai’s hand was the comic "Lady Doctor." She took the other book from Xu Chunliang and became excited: "Korea Rhododendron, I especially liked reading this book. I read the electronic version online two years ago. I didn’t expect it to be introduced and published. Xu Chunliang, why didn’t you tell me earlier that you knew Bai Lan? Oh, I thought she looked familiar. I should have asked her for a photo together."
Xu Chunliang said, "That’s simple. She’s having a book signing tomorrow afternoon, why don’t you come with me to show some support?"
Gao Xiaobai nodded repeatedly, "That’s great, she’s quite a talented author."
Xu Chunliang asked, "Is she very famous?"
Gao Xiaobai replied, "She’s really popular on the Peninsula, especially her comic ’Lady Doctor’ which is currently in the top three of their domestic comic sales chart. It’s really hard to get, but I personally prefer ’Korean Rose’, that book has been quite enlightening for me."
Xu Chunliang asked, "What’s it about?"
Gao Xiaobai said, "The Korean Rose is North Korea’s national flower, also known as Mugunghwa, Rhododendron, symbolizing steadfastness, resilience, and the fearless spirit of the nation. North Koreans hold a deep affection for it, choosing it as their national flower to express reverence. This novel tells the story of a North Korean girl’s struggle. The book in your hands should answer your questions once you read it; I’m sure you’ll like it."
Out of curiosity, during today’s training class, Xu Chunliang specifically studied the book ’Korean Rose’. The story’s backdrop is North Korea, providing a young girl’s perspective on societal conditions, revealing many little-known secrets, and recounting the trials of a couple who suffered persecution and how their two daughters survived adversity.
The writing of this book is quite good, and the story is very intricate, but the overall tone is rather somber. If Xu Chunliang hadn’t met the author Bai Lan, he would have thought some bitter North Korean aunt had written this piece.
It was the first time Chen Qianfan saw Xu Chunliang read a book so intently. With nothing better to do, he picked up another book, ’Lady Doctor’, and got unexpectedly hooked.
When class ended, Xu Chunliang was ready to step outside for some fresh air and found Chen Qianfan still immersed in the comic.
He patted Chen Qianfan on the shoulder and said, "Old Chen, is that book good?"
Chen Qianfan took a deep breath and said, "It’s great, you should read it properly. It’s about a female doctor from the Peninsula who crosses into ancient times and shows her Divine Power."
Xu Chunliang said, "Isn’t this kind of story already everywhere?"
Chen Qianfan said, "It’s good and professional. The author is also a beauty, look." He pointed at the photo on the front page for Xu Chunliang to see.
Xu Chunliang responded indifferently, "I know her."
Chen Qianfan stared wide-eyed at Xu Chunliang, thinking, is he bluffing?
Xu Chunliang said, "These two books were gifted to me by her."
Gulp! Chen Qianfan swallowed a mouthful of saliva.
Seeing his reaction, Xu Chunliang instantly had an idea and informed him about Bai Lan’s book signing event at the Book Mansion tomorrow, encouraging Chen Qianfan to rally a few employees to the scene for support. Chen Qianfan readily agreed.
After school, Chen Qianfan drove Xu Chunliang to the hotel, where Pu Jian had arrived in advance. Xu Chunliang asked him to contact the hotel’s security department to retrieve the parking lot’s surveillance footage, which showed a little black kid slashed all four tires of the car.
Pu Jian showed Xu Chunliang the video he captured, and Chen Qianfan also joined in to watch the commotion. Watching the kid pull out a knife and slash the tires swiftly and cleanly, Pu Jian couldn’t help but sigh and ask, "I wonder when you offended your African friends?"
Chen Qianfan said, "Do you know this kid?"
Xu Chunliang shook his head.
Pu Jian said, "Think carefully, have you been involved with any black girls in the past?"
Xu Chunliang answered, "My taste isn’t that heavy."
Chen Qianfan said, "Pu Jian, do you suspect this kid is related to Chunliang?"
Pu Jian said, "Maybe he’s his illegitimate child."
Xu Chunliang laughed and cursed, "You talk bullshit, take a big look, where does this kid look like me?"
Pu Jian said, "Their genes are powerful; mixed children come out with this color code."
Chen Qianfan nodded along, "This kid looks about ten years old; why would he target your car specifically?" Then he realized something and he and Xu Chunliang looked at Pu Jian simultaneously.
Xu Chunliang said, "Pu Jian, could it be revenge against you?"
Chen Qianfan said, "Exactly, people recognize cars not people, Pu Jian, just confess."
Pu Jian scratched his head, "Now that you say it, I used to date a black girl, but she wasn’t pregnant."
Chen Qianfan said, "That’s because you didn’t drink the Five-Whip Rejuvenating Wine."
"Old Chen, you’re not being kind!"
Chen Qianfan laughed, "I’m just trying to glorify our country! With your stamina, you’d be rattled by an electric motor."
"Look down on me? I’m not bragging, I..."
Pu Jian’s words suddenly stopped because he saw a thirteen or fourteen-year-old black kid watching from not far away. Seeing Pu Jian notice him, he got scared and turned to run.
Pu Jian shouted, "Hey, you stop right there!"
Pu Jian started the chase, and Xu Chunliang and Chen Qianfan followed him.
Although the little black kid was underage, he ran pretty fast. Pu Jian was the first to give chase but after running a hundred meters, he was out of breath, first overtaken by Xu Chunliang and then Chen Qianfan.
