Chapter 88 - 78: Major Reward for the Research Paper
"Come in!"
A sultry female voice, dripping with charm, echoed from within the office.
The first time Roy had heard that voice, it felt like a hundred tiny claws were scratching at his heart.
But hearing it now, his scalp tingled and a chill shot up his spine. He fought the urge to turn and run as far away as possible.
Roy took a deep breath, suppressed those distracting thoughts, and stepped inside.
A bewitchingly beautiful Female Wizard sat lazily behind a large desk.
She glanced at the male Apprentice with her glistening, beautiful eyes before her gaze fell back to the old notebook open on her desk.
As usual, Nai Luo’s attire was exceptionally seductive.
She wore a dark Wizard Robe with an audacious cut, revealing a stunning landscape across her chest where the captivating valley was clearly visible.
Her skin had the luster of the finest white jade, so delicate that it made one yearn to reach out and touch it. It was hard not to stare.
Roy fought to control his gaze.
He didn’t dare look at the Female Wizard’s face, let alone the magnificent expanse of pale skin. Instead, he fixed his eyes on the cat resting quietly at the corner of the desk, shimmering with a brilliant golden light.
Every single strand of its fur was pure gold, glowing under the Magic Energy Lamp like a gentle, dazzling flame that wasn’t harsh on the eyes.
This was a Golden Cat.
Everyone in the society knew it was the Spiritual Pet the Female Wizard had raised for many years.
The most magical thing about the Golden Cat was that it shed a small amount of fur every day, and the moment these hairs fell off, they would turn into pure gold.
Real gold!
For a mortal, this would be enough to drive them mad.
But to a Wizard, gold was just a material with limited use.
Roy recited his prepared lines as quickly as possible, "Your Excellency, I just received a paper transferred by the Witch Spirit."
Nai Luo had been looking absent-minded, but the Apprentice’s next sentence immediately captured her full attention.
"The paper’s author is—The River Flows Eastward."
Nai Luo’s gaze lifted from her notebook and locked onto Roy’s face. "I recognize that name."
Roy continued, "In the paper, the author proposes a brand-new Divination Theory, specifically for solving high-difficulty isolated systems of equations..."
He hadn’t even finished speaking when the Female Wizard cut him off. "Hah! This First Level Apprentice certainly talks a big game."
Roy disagreed with that statement.
His intuition for Divination, honed by long-term paper review, told him this paper was thoroughly rigorous.
Although there were many derivations he couldn’t quite follow, he could sense an indescribable "beauty of Divination."
So Roy boldly "talked back," saying, "There are many parts of the paper where I sensed a beauty in its Divination. But my own level of Divination is insufficient to review a paper of this caliber, so I could only bring it before Your Excellency."
Nai Luo scoffed, "You’re just a lowly Second Level Apprentice who hasn’t even dabbled in Central Circle Divination. What would you know about the beauty of Divination?"
The so-called "Central Circle Divination" was a common classification method for Secret Divination and Divination.
Divination related to the first through third Spirit Rings was generally called "Low-Ring Divination"; from the fourth to the sixth Spirit Ring was "Central Circle Divination"; and anything above the sixth Spirit Ring was "High-Ring Divination."
This was only a rough categorization, as much of the knowledge from Low-Ring Divination also had broad applications within the High-Ring Divination domain.
Roy lowered his head, not daring to argue with the Female Wizard any further.
Nai Luo maintained her lazy demeanor. "Let me see the paper."
At the same time, the Female Wizard instantly cast a Level Zero Witchcraft: [Magic Hand].
The paper instantly left Roy’s hand and appeared before the Female Wizard in the next moment. At a glance, it looked as if it had teleported.
In reality, that wasn’t the case. The speed of its movement was simply too fast, exceeding the visual limit of an Apprentice.
The Female Wizard flicked a finger, and the paper hovered before her, the first page unfolding automatically.
Roy stood obediently in place, continuing to focus his full attention on the Golden Cat.
A minute passed in silence.
Roy caught a glimpse from the corner of his eye as the alluring Female Wizard suddenly adjusted her posture. Her back left the chair, her body sitting completely upright, which seemed to make the pale curve of her chest even more pronounced.
He didn’t dare to keep watching, not even from the corner of his eye, and quickly lowered his gaze.
But Roy understood. That small detail spoke volumes.
"There’s some substance to this!"
The Female Wizard suddenly muttered to herself.
Hearing this, a wave of relief washed over Roy.
He happily thought to himself, ’I knew it. A paper written by The River Flows Eastward would definitely be solid.’
He didn’t linger. After giving a slight, silent bow, he quietly exited the office.
Roy’s steps were exceptionally light as he walked toward the duty room.
「More than half an hour later.」
The clock’s perpetually moving hands finally crossed the day’s Boundary Line.
A flash of gold suddenly leaped onto Roy’s desk, startling him out of his Divination calculations.
Roy looked up and saw that the Golden Cat had arrived.
It sat on the desk, its amber eyes watching him quietly, its golden fur glowing with a warm luster under the Magic Energy Lamp.
The Golden Cat lingered for a moment, left a slip of paper, and then silently hopped off the desk.
Its golden figure flashed at the doorway and vanished into the darkness of the corridor.
Roy glanced at the note, and a smile instantly touched the corners of his lips.
