Game Market 1983

EP. 14: American Dolphins (5)

“You don't have to go inside the school. ”

“What do you mean? ”

“I've already found the person I want. ”

Yes, I wasn't really looking for a game developer

The game utilizing polygons that we commonly recognize was the NEGA's Virtual Fighter, which appeared in 1994. Obviously it gave us visual shock, but in fact, there was also a game of polygons in '88.

It was a racing game, "Hard Driving Bean," published by Atari, who was almost out of breath in the United States, and "Winning Run," produced by Vancosa, Japan.

The polygonal racing game at this time was surprising to see, but the game was lousy. The graphics expressed by dot looked much better, and the fatal drawbacks were that the car felt like it was floating in the air rather than running on the ground.

Moreover, 3D graphics that had not been monotonous since there was no technology to texture polygons had eventually disappeared from gamers' memories at the speed of light. At least not until the arrival of the NEGA's Virtual Fighter.

“Mr. Ellis, I'm eating first. Let me talk to the students over there for a second. ”

“Hey, boss? Sir!?"

When I got up from my seat, I brought a chair to the table of the students talking across the street.

“Who are you?”

“Sorry for the meal. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but I got interested because you were telling a very interesting story. ”

“You overheard us? ”

A man called John looked at me with an unpleasant look. I guess I didn't like their conversation.

I took a business card out of my wallet and put it on the table. Then John, who picked up his business card, tilted his head and asked me.

“Isn't mintendo a company that builds gaming machines? ”

“That's right."

“We weren't talking about the game. I was talking about the geometric drawings for architectural engineering.”

“I heard that, too. What I'm interested in is the device you mentioned called the GPU. ”

“You know, it's not even an official name yet. I was just talking about the centrifuge, and then I got unconscious. ”

“I don't care what your name is. The question is, can we make it or not? You couldn't actually build a geometric diagram. ”

When I stabbed the opponent's sore spot lightly, I immediately reacted.

“It's not because my implementation is wrong, it's because my computer is underperforming. ”

“The way you talk about it, it's hard to implement at the moment on a supercomputer. Introducing the z-axis in a world that was implemented only with x and y on a typical screen is a good way. You say you don't have anything to do with the game, but you can build a house based on the geometry that you create, and the game character can move around in it like a human being. Rather, you can create a whole new game that's never been the same. ”

“The game you play in the blueprints..? ”

John bites his fingernails for a moment and thinks: And after a while. He shakes his head violently and rebukes.

“No way. And then you have to make the MAP itself enormously big, and you have to make a game out of just four polygons. ”

“That's why we need more. The device you mentioned, the GPU. I didn't want to make you a game. What I need is a device to help me process the graphics. ”

“So you're saying you want me to build it now? ”

Of course not. You have to make it by the one who said the thirsty man sold the well.

In 2015, a single graphics card that could be implemented from 2D to 3D was common, but in the early days of 3D graphics, it was created as an accelerator that separately mounted terminals on VGA cards to assist in computing only on 3D graphics.

What I'm asking John Curtis now is a request for an auxiliary device similar to the 3Dfx made by VooDoo.

Moving from the restaurant, we found the famous club club group ‘hack’ at MIT University.

Elise, who followed me into the university, asked me in an uneasy voice.

“Sir? Are we okay? I feel like I'm in a big place.”

“It's a huge place. This place is like a playground for geniuses. ”

“Playground? It is.”

“It's a little different than the usual playground, but...”

Following guidance from John and Michael, we arrived in a dark interior illuminated only by a blue monitor. There were a few bunk beds on the side of the wall, and I noticed that someone was sleeping sometimes.

“Hey, guys, wake up. ”

John walks into the club room and turns on the lamp and starts hearing groaning.

“Hey, John. What the fuck are you doing with the lights on at this hour? Yesterday at dawn, I couldn't sleep for hours. ”

“It's not about the part-time job. Get up. ”

At John's words, a few sleeping comforts begin to rise from their sleeping bags.

They were all so big because of the Westerners, but in my eyes, they looked as cute as the little fairies waking up.

If there is a Dwarf, an artisan craftsman who makes tools in the fantasy world, the Dwarves in the real world might enter this.

“John, what's going on? ”

The man who woke up and couldn't even open his eyes properly was growing a hot beard that wasn't suitable for his age.

"One bearded stone."

“What the hell, John? You said you were going to eat. Didn't you buy mine? ”

‘Two small stones with protruding front teeth. ’

“Who's next to you? ”

‘There are three skeleton stones that seem to be soft and faint even if touched with your finger. ’

There were five puppets staring at us, up to John and Michael who guided us. At that moment, Elise, who was hiding behind me, gives me a small nod.

“Hi, I'm Elise with the U.S. office in Minten. Please take good care of him.”

“A woman!!! Oh, my God!! ”

“Why? Why is there a woman in our club room!? ”

“Who are you!? Whose girlfriend!! Nobody move!! The killer is moving!! Fuck!! Traitor!! ”

The three stoneworkers who woke up were having a different reaction to Elise's appearance. Since they were a little embarrassed, John and Michael scratched the back of their heads and introduced me to their friends.

“Tom, Hank, Rob, from that skinny guy at the end. There are a few others who usually spend their vacation savings on computer parts, so they only come to school at night. ”

“Hmm? Who's the Asian guy next to you? ”

What? They only saw Elise and I didn't care? Well, it's not a very nice thing to be attracted to men, but...

I wish I had brought Chend when I came to America. If I had come with him, it would have worked out very well...

For a moment, John and Michael briefly conveyed the conversation we had in the restaurant to their friends. After some conversation, Luffy Robb opens his mouth to learn a little.

“John. So you're saying we should build an accelerator to help with CPU graphics computation? ”

“Yes, if we could design a memory for the graphics operation separately without touching the main memory, wouldn't that be enough? ”

“Well, if it's not a factory production, we could make a couple. But there's a problem. ”

Rob's tired expression opens his mouth, touching his hot beard.

“There's no such thing as free. Don't you think we should be rewarded for what we do? ”

Then John shrugged his shoulders and took a step back and looked at me.

“Rob's right. Your proposal for funding research is sweet, but they're not going to move without any profit. ”

Hmm... Is it my turn now? I stepped up to a man named Rob and asked him.

“I also know that the work you do is very difficult and will take a lot of time because I work in the gaming industry. That's why your monthly salary will include your monthly salary. Tell me, how much do you want? ”

Then Rob smiled and laughed at my words.

“You sound like you can give me as much as you want. You don't look that old. ”

Huh? It's coming out loud. However, I could not show myself swayed here, so I replied with a smile.

“Well, if it's not high enough, I'll give you some credit. ”

If you take a ridiculous amount of money and show it to Chandra, we can work something out... Rob rolls his head hard bending his fingers and opens his mouth with a gruesome smile.

“First of all, we need to invest our own time. Usually I work at night after class because I'm hungry, and I have to give up the cost of supplies, the cost of supplies, the cost of supplies, and the part-time dependency.”

That's meticulous. That's why I'm asking for so much money...

Rob smiles remorsefully after a few moments of excitement.

“At least $500 more per capita.”

“OK ~ Deal!!! ”

I chanted the deal before Rob finished speaking. I thought I was asking for $100,000 for something else. You little punk... This is much cheaper than I was going to offer you.

“Mr. Ellis, did you bring the contract? ”

“Of course, sir. ”

“Start by filling out a contract and receive an account. I'll wire it to them next month, along with their salaries, so please take good care of them. ”

“Yes, sir. ”

I'll have to check Chendra's visa next month when I return to Japan. I was busy moving the pen and smiling gladly at the soccer players who were signing the contract.
