Game Market 1983

< EP. 46: A lot of time has passed. (3) >

“How are you feeling? ”

“Well, strangely light. ”

Tsubaki, who held two fists with a bright smile, felt more beautiful than ever.

An hour later, the first Tokyo Games Show was just two days away from closing.

Although Mintendo did not participate, the Tokyo Games Show was successful in establishing itself as a meaningful event for users and industry, as all content was concentrated on the game under the name "Game Show."

A total of 88 gaming booths were set up, but about half of them were amateur clubs of high school and university students, including some of the work I coached at the Japanese Institute of Electronics that was quite popular.

500 titles that had been prepared in small quantities without much expectation were sold out so quickly that they had to be booked separately...

Their game is called Queen of Hearts.

It reminded me of the Top of Fighters series created by SMK. It was actually a parody fighting game using beauty characters.

“Unh!! Cute!!"

“Is that... Hasegawa Miyuki in the street without me? ”

The crowds who passed by her as if she was wielding a pink purse, a proprietary weapon, watched the playback video and blew up the barrel.

“Huh? Besides, they're Kaori from God's gift, right? ”

She swings the violin's bow like a sword, and as she puts her distance between her opponents, she turns the violin on and shoots a note.

“Unh!! What is this, some kind of crazy character concept? Did the developer get mulberries...”

Moreover, not only the heroes who appeared in the Pentagon, but also the heroes who appeared in Fox Soft's ‘Biceps Memorial’ were struggling to survive the battle without opening their wallets.

“Is this for sale? ”

On the first day of the game show, Suzuko nodded and replied to a user's question while looking at the monitor.

“Yes, but Queen of Hearts is a game made for Windows 95, do you have it? ”

“Yes, there is!! How much?”

“Thank you for purchasing our graduate work title. Title amount is 2000 yen. ”

“Ugh... so cheap. Give me two. ”

“Sorry, we only sell one piece of graduate work per person. ”

“Ah... one I was going to collect as a seal, unfortunately. ”

Shortly after, the 250 titles that I was aiming to sell on the first day were sold in about 20 minutes, unexpected excitement brought students to the Pentagon booth to find me.

“Teacher. Que... Queen of Hearts!! Our Queen of Hearts!!! ”

Just after the dragon emblem conference, I came down and stole the sweat with my handkerchief, and I opened my mouth to my disciples with an unconcerned voice.

“Is it sold out? ”

“Yes? Oh, yes! It sold out less than 30 minutes ago. ”

Among the games played by the amateur team at the Tokyo Games Show, there were also many shooters because they were easier to create than other genres.

If you set the trajectory of a certain shell depending on the enemy that appears, the rest of you will only need to set the movement of the protagonist gas. Perhaps it was not the easiest genre to create an entry in a short period of time.

However, Queen of Hart, a Japanese Institute of Electronics, has broken the framework of amateur work and launched a Feud Action Game.

Of course, it was not easy to create a fight game with students.

Even with low resolution dot graphics, the player needed reasonably good motion graphics, and it was a difficult task that required three to four frame rates per technology.

But there was more to it than that to make students feel uncomfortable...

“Sir, how do I set up an A.I. for an enemy character? ”

Often when playing combat games, an enemy character that your computer deals with has a variety of reactions depending on your behavior.

As a simple example, if you compare it to the Street Fire series, will you block the hurricane you shot, will you avoid it, will you retaliate against it, or will you stand back...

One of these possibilities was that the A.I. was very difficult to adapt to the students' level in response to the unusual behavior of players who were approaching them in time.

In this era of development, however, using test play to build databases is an unimaginable time...

Anyway, I taught my students how to set up a simple AI that I often used in early game fights.

It was using timers and stamina gauges.

“A timer?”

The first time I heard my explanation, the students turned their heads to see if they didn't understand well.

In fact, the behavior pattern of the initial fighting game was adjusted by this timer, which determines which timing the character will play aggressively or take defensive variability.

As soon as you look back at all the fighting games, there will be very few characters running like crazy towards the player as soon as the battle begins. This is usually because developers have pre-set their defensive postures to keep their distance from the player for 10 seconds after the battle begins.

Before accumulating a database of play patterns during development, it was common for developers to change patterns based on their daily timer and remaining HP gauges…

Thanks to this, Queen of Hearts, created by professional academy students, had a decent form of fighting game even for a short time.

Not to mention a street without me and a gift from God. Last but not least, there were eight bonus characters in Fujisaki Shiori who appeared in the Brain Memorial, so Queen of Hart's popularity was probably already planned.

Of course, in addition to the Pentagon character, the character Fujisaki Siori of Fox Soft is engaged in a battle, and he's also suggesting that he may or may not have fallen for copyright.

First of all, Queen of Hart was an amateur work by students and the game development of professional institutes, and she did not throw up every day because she did not damage Fox Soft's image.

I complimented my disciples with a smiley smile when I heard that Fox Soft's officials also laughed and passed on, because it was a game for Windows only, not specifically aiming at either console.

The second day of the game show. Pm

The disciples' Queen of Hearts won the best amateur game award at the first Tokyo Games School.

I was delighted to see the students who were running around with trophies in their hands, but I was only able to return to the Pentagon after a group photo shoot with my students in a professional institute booth.

“Phew... I'm so busy...”

Tsubaki, dressed in a gorgeous burrito costume, laughed at my suit that was crumpled around by the students.

“You're popular with students. ”

“I was actually a decent teacher. ”

A voice was heard from all over the president announcing the closing of the Tokyo Games Show.

Then outside the waiting room, I heard the voices of the mourned users.

“Oh, is it over...? ”

“You could do this all week...”

“I know. When do we wait till next summer? ”

“I feel like two days is too short since I left yesterday for the Dragon Emblem...”

“The dragon emblem was amazing, but did you see the new video on Capco? ”

“Oh, that zombie thing? The opening was amazing…”

“Right? I didn't think I'd faint from that crouching scene, but I thought I'd fainted when I saw that half of his face...”

“I don't think the game graphics are going to get any better. How can you make such a terrible scene happen? ”

I secretly smiled at the sound of the user's conversation with good game experience.

“Everyone must have enjoyed it. How many times did I only hear the elastic sound of people while I was in the waiting room...”

I nodded and said to Tsubaki, smiling at me.

“That voice will soon turn into cheer, right? ”

“I'll give it a try. But first, I have to tell Joon-Hyuk. ”

“Hmm? To me? ”

“I want to tell people about my illness on the live stage today. ”

“What? Why? You said it was getting better. ”

“Even if it gets better, it'll be a long year next year. Maybe today is my first and last day in front of the fans. I don't want to leave without saying goodbye to people who loved my song. ”

In the eyes of Tsubaki looking at me, there was determination.

Tsubaki seemed to already know that nothing I said was just a good persuasion to her.

So in the end, I smiled with a small sigh.

“Yes. Okay...”

-The performance of Virtual Idol, celebrating the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Games Show, will be held in Odaiba Beach Park. Visitors, please check your pamphlets and move on to the scheduled time of the show. -

“Oh, we're just getting started. ”

“Yeah, the first stage started with Erica? ”

“That's right. We should be ready by now. ”

“Let's go, then. ”

A glamorous video of the next generation of consoles with RidgeRacer's openings.

And after Valentine's Day, Capco's series of ‘Resident Monsters', which sparked incredible interest in the event, appeared with the dragon emblem that caused chaos.

And finally, just before the announcement of the end of all events, a concert of Virtual Idol, prepared for an agreement with the Tokyo Gameshow Authority, Kishimoto, was about to begin.

“As expected, the end of the event is music!! ”

After the event ended, users who left the Tokyo Vicsite began to run towards the beach in news of the concert on Virtue Idol.

It was a pretty cold day because it was early December, but it didn't matter how cold the gamers were.

“Erica, Azzaa!!! ”

“Tsubaki!!! ”

“Cheryl!!! ”

... before boarding the bus to the event site with Tsubaki. Seeing people running busy shouting the names of their favorite characters, I recalled a scene from the movie ’28 days after’ that I had seen before the regression and shook my whole body.

“Huh? Sir!! ”

Turning to the familiar voice that came from behind, the disciples were rushing towards me.

“Hey, guys! How did you get here without clearing out the booth...”

Approaching them with open arms with a warm smile...

“Woo!! Mr. Tsubaki!! ”

Like a paddle-grade boxer, the students who dropped out of my arm immediately swarmed around Tsubaki.

“You're Mr. Tsubaki of Virtual Idol, right? ”

“Oh!! Reality!! Reality!! ”

... Suzuko approached me and smiled on behalf of the students who left the inner circle like rats.

“Good job, sir. ”

“Yes, you did well. ”

“Like the teacher said, I just got a bunch of business cards from various game companies asking me to come after graduation. ”

“Really? That's great. Everyone's relieved of their worries about the job, huh? ”

“But at the end of the discussion with everyone, we decided to do what you said. ”

“You decided to start a new third-party company that I'm applying for, right? ”

“Yes! I already have a name! ”

“Already? What did you say? ”

“LEVEL.3. ”

“ · · · · · ·. ”

“Isn't it adorable for the title of the game company? ”

“You probably know about 30 levels of what you need to do in an Alpysie game. When are you gonna grow up? ”

“You can continue to help me.”

I swoop down and pull my arm, throwing a bloody smile at Suzuko.

“Sir, can we go to this bus concert too!? ”

“If you don't want to, why don't you? Do whatever you want. ”

“Wow!! ”

After a while, I stepped down with the students to the concert chairman, sending Tsubaki up to the waiting room and looked at the stage.

The main title of Virtue Idol was floated in a huge screen installed under the night sky.

Wherever they got it from, the users' hands were filled with colorful fluorescent bars, and after a short while the bell to announce the start of the concert began to shake dizzily.

The concert started from Erica's stage and was played in the order in which Idol's single record was released, but the concert went very smoothly because everyone had experienced the concert battles before.

After going through Cheryl's overwhelming stage and Azsa's adorable stage, she finally came to Tsubaki's turn, and she calmed down.

“Ah... you're finally seeing the real thing...”

Unlike the last live battle when they were forced to greet her on the screen, this time they were looking forward to hearing her voice directly.

But that's also a...

With Mike quietly in his mouth, Tsubaki opens his mouth in a distinctive calm voice.

“Here today... one of our four will be absent. ”

The atmosphere of the concert that I had always been drawn to sank all at once.

It will be the day that I have already foretold the event of the Tokyo Games Show.

Taking all the data to date, it seems that the mistakes were more frequent than other asteroids, and Kono Azsa's failure to be a topic was powerful, but her stage that she had just shown was still the best.

Those who cheered and cheered for Azsa looked disappointed at Tsubaki's words.

However, the next thing she said, she was appalled by the faces of the people gathered at the presidency.

“And that's me. ”
