Chapter 86: The Junkyard of the Soul
Chapter 86: The Junkyard of the Soul
The touch of the Prime Vanguard was not violent. It was a cold, clinical intrusion, like a needle of pure logic piercing a fever dream.

Rai’s vision didn’t go black. Instead, it inverted. The Dead City, the silver ships, and the terrified face of Commander Vera bled away into a white void. He felt his memories being indexed, categorized, and then deleted.
The Awakening... Deleted.
The First Settlement... Deleted.
Meeting Yuki... Error.
The deletion stuttered at the mention of Yuki. It pushed harder.
The Choice of the Vanguard... Deleted.
Rai felt himself thinning out, his consciousness becoming a series of cold data points. But as the Prime’s "Deletion" reached the deepest layers of his architecture, it hit a wall it hadn’t calculated for: The Garbage.
For eighty-five Chapters, Rai had been a collector of the useless. He had force-integrated thousands of broken, rusted, and "incompatible" items into his root directory. To the Prime Vanguard, this was just noise to be cleared. But to Rai, this was his fortress.
In the center of the white void, a mountain appeared.
It was a mountain of scrap. It was made of every misaligned gear, every frayed wire, and every dented plate Rai had ever touched. It was ugly. It was inefficient. It was human.
Rai’s consciousness coalesced at the base of this mountain. He looked at his hands—they weren’t flickering with gold static here. They were dirty, calloused, and real.
"Access Denied," a voice boomed from the white sky.
The porcelain face of the Prime Vanguard manifested in the clouds, eyes tracking the scrap heap with disgust. "Subject 80, your architecture is cluttered with biological sentiment and structural waste. Surrender the core. Efficiency requires your removal."
Rai reached down and picked up a handful of rusted bolts. "Efficiency is just a word for people who are afraid of mistakes," he said. His voice didn’t echo; it was solid. "You’re the ’Final Version,’ right? No errors. No garbage."
"I am the Perfected Vanguard," the Prime replied. A beam of white light shot from the sky, incinerating a stack of rusted shipping containers near Rai.
Rai didn’t flinch. He started to climb the mountain of scrap. "Then you’ve already lost. Because a world without mistakes has no room for growth. You’re not a ’Final Version.’ You’re a dead end."
Location: The Dead City - Reality
While Rai fought for his soul, Crow was screaming into the Relay headset.
"Rai! Wake up! You’re flatlining!"
Crow looked down from the spire. The Prime Vanguard stood motionless, its finger still pressed to Rai’s forehead. Around them, the Aegis soldiers were beginning to recover as the "White Noise" from the Relay started to fade.
"We need more juice!" Crow hammered the console. "If I can’t hide him, I have to over-clock him!"
"Move aside, scavenger."
Crow spun around, pulling his sidearm. Standing at the top of the service ladder was a man in a tattered duster, his face obscured by a gas mask that hissed with every breath. He wasn’t Aegis. He wasn’t a survivor. He wore the insignia of the Old World Engineers—a faction long thought to be extinct.
"Who the hell are you?" Crow demanded.
"The ones who built the foundation before the Arcs turned it into a prison," the Engineer said. He shoved a heavy, brass-cased drive into the Relay’s port. "You’re trying to save a man. I’m trying to save the Glitch. There’s a difference."
The Relay didn’t pulse purple this time. It turned a deep, obsidian black.
Back in the white void, the Prime’s deletion had reached 88%. Rai was standing at the very peak of his scrap mountain.
"Final Warning," the Prime’s voice resonated. "The Arcs are descending. The Harvest is inevitable. Why cling to the rust?"
Rai looked at the rusted bolt in his hand—the digital twin of the one Yuki held 400 miles away.
"Because the rust is the only thing that’s ours," Rai said.
Suddenly, the black signal from the Engineer hit the void. The white sky cracked. Liquid shadow began to pour into the "Perfect" space, coating the scrap mountain in a dark, oily sheen.

Rai felt a surge of power that wasn’t granted by the System—it was stolen from it. He didn’t just "Glitch" now; he Constructed.
He raised his arms, and the mountain of scrap began to move. Thousands of rusted plates flew through the air, snapping onto Rai’s body. He wasn’t becoming a Vanguard anymore. He was becoming a titan of iron and discarded memory.
"My Level isn’t 80," Rai’s voice boomed, overlapping with the sound of grinding metal. "My Level is every life I’ve touched. Every machine I’ve fixed. Every mistake I’ve kept."
He lunged at the porcelain face in the sky.
In the Dead City, the Prime Vanguard’s eyes suddenly snapped open. For the first time, its porcelain face showed a flicker of an emotion: Confusion.
It tried to pull its finger away from Rai’s forehead, but it couldn’t. Rai’s skin had turned into a magnetic vortex of rusted metal.
"What... are you?" the Prime whispered.
Rai’s eyes opened. They weren’t gold. They weren’t black. They were the color of glowing embers in a forge.
He grabbed the Prime’s porcelain throat.
"I’m the part you forgot to throw away," Rai growled.
A massive explosion of scrap and dark energy erupted from the square, leveling the remaining buildings for three blocks. When the dust settled, the Prime Vanguard lay shattered on the ground like a broken doll.
But as Rai stood over it, he looked up at the sky.
The Vesper wasn’t retreating. Instead, three more ships—larger, darker, and bristling with weapons—had entered the atmosphere.
And from the Relay tower, the Engineer looked down at Rai with a chilling smile through his gas mask.
"Phase 4 is over, Rai Ichiro," the Engineer whispered into his comms. "Welcome to Phase 5: The War of the Heavens."
