Chapter 1201 - 594: Hidden Depths? An Unexpected Gain (Part 2)
He could tell Miss Lin was in a bit of a "to hell with it" mood.
Luo Fei merely snorted in disdain.
"There’s no need for that. Unless someone takes the initiative to file a report, or hires a lawyer to press charges on their behalf. Otherwise, we the police won’t say anything."
Luo Fei’s tone was faint and cool.
That made Miss Lin feel all the more offended.
It was as if Luo Fei were deliberately ignoring her.
That made her physically more uncomfortable than flat-out calling her a fraudster.
"Officer, actually I didn’t dare spend a large portion of Xiong Damao’s money. I just put it into savings."
"If possible, I’d like to return this money to that elderly couple and lessen their suffering a bit."
As Miss Lin spoke, her tone was a little nervous, clearly hesitant.
Luo Fei couldn’t help being curious.
"Then why are you only saying this now? Why didn’t you bring it up earlier?"
He could see Luo Fei was somewhat puzzled.
Miss Lin merely gave an ambiguous response.
"Mr. Luo, this is only human, isn’t it?"
"After all, Zhu Xiaolin never told his parents I existed. If I suddenly showed up with a large sum of money saying it was their son’s hard‑earned savings that I barely touched..."
"What would they think of me? They might even take me for a murderer."
Miss Lin might be irresponsible, but when it came to self‑preservation, she was sharp enough.
So Luo Fei nodded and said,
"I understand, Miss Lin. In that case, I’ll go along with your wishes. I’ll convey your intentions and ask the couple whether they plan to continue holding you accountable."
But upon hearing Luo Fei’s reply,
Miss Lin was struck dumb.
"Wait, Mr. Luo, hang on."
"I already agreed to cooperate with the police investigation and turned over the money. Shouldn’t you say a few good words for me in front of them?"
Miss Lin said this with a sheepish chuckle, her tone softening, almost completely shedding her earlier arrogant attitude.
Seeing that Miss Lin was a bit embarrassed,
and that there was some bafflement in her tone,
Luo Fei told her,
"Miss Lin, the police aren’t omnipotent. What we can do is very limited."
"At most, we can talk to the couple more, try to persuade them not to pursue your responsibility, but that’s all. In the end, the decision is up to the victims."
As Luo Fei spoke, his tone stayed quiet and even.
This made Miss Lin open her mouth,
but for a long moment she couldn’t get a word out.
In the end, in order to ensure her own safety and avoid being regarded as a criminal,
she chose to remain silent.
At this point, Luo Fei also spoke up in that mild tone, taking the initiative to ask,
"By the way, Miss Lin, apart from Zhu Xiaolin, do you have any other suitors? Do you think any of them might possibly, in order to be with you, do something extreme, even to the point of hurting others?"
Hearing Luo Fei ask this,
Lin Qingqing gave a noncommittal answer.
"Mr. Luo, speaking of it, I do have other suitors. But they all know about Zhu Xiaolin, and they know how obsessive he is. So... I doubt they’d dare lightly cross him."
When Lin Qingqing said this,
Luo Fei exchanged a look with Su Jianfan.
Clearly, the two of them hadn’t expected
this case to grow more and more convoluted.
That left them both a bit troubled.
"Miss Lin, whatever the case, thank you for being willing to provide us with leads."
"We’ll investigate actively and strive to solve the case as soon as possible."
Just as the two were about to leave,
Miss Lin suddenly seemed to think of something
and called them back.
"Hey, wait a second, Mr. Luo."
"Yes?"
He could see she was hesitating, clearly wanting to tell him something,
but not quite sure whether she should say it outright.
Luo Fei was genuinely starting to lose patience.
Miss Lin had to take a deep breath
and said carefully,
"Mr. Luo, it’s like this."
"There’s someone who isn’t exactly a suitor, but I can feel he has feelings for me—he just won’t admit it. I’ve never accepted his advances, so he gradually cooled off. I don’t know if that counts as a lead or not?"
As Miss Lin spoke, she pulled up some chat logs on her phone for Luo Fei to see.
What he saw was
a string of messages from an anonymous netizen.
Luo Fei noted the user’s screen name and IP address.
The man hadn’t said much to Miss Lin,
just occasionally checked in on her,
asking about her work and such.
"Mr. Luo, at first I thought this guy was just some little online fan of mine, because I sometimes do livestreams singing, just as a side gig."
"But later I started to feel something was off. I asked him if he liked me, if he had feelings for me and so on. But he never replied."
Hearing this,
Luo Fei and Su Jianfan traded a glance.
Clearly this person was suspicious. He might well be someone who liked Miss Lin and had dug into her relationship with Zhu Xiaolin.
Outwardly he kept a calm front,
but in reality he’d already made his move in secret, eliminating his rival in love.
When she heard this line of reasoning,
Miss Lin shuddered all over,
almost unable to believe her ears.
"That can’t be, can it? I’ve never even met this person. He’s only tipped me a few times during my streams."
Miss Lin spoke, again hesitant.
Clearly,
she had never imagined such a thing could happen.
She’d only wanted to earn some extra income through livestreaming, yet it had led to a tragedy.
But Luo Fei spoke with firm conviction.
"Miss Lin, I don’t think this man is innocent. But as for the specifics, we’ll have to wait until the investigation is complete before drawing conclusions. So until then, I’d ask you to stay calm."
Luo Fei’s words only deepened Lin Qingqing’s sense of guilt.
She even felt as if it were all her fault, as if she had caused Zhu Xiaolin’s death.
That made her feel even more remorseful inside,
and all the more abashed.
"I’m really sorry, Officer. If I’d known something like this would happen, I would never have gotten involved with Zhu Xiaolin."
Lin Qingqing’s words
made Luo Fei and Su Jianfan share another look.
Without a doubt, they felt Lin Qingqing was engaging in a bit of hindsight.
But as law enforcement, they only had to handle the case.
The rest wasn’t their concern.
They weren’t obliged to correct an adult’s values or morals.
"Mr. Luo, you’ll never guess where this signal was sent from."
After a while,
Su Jianfan couldn’t help exclaiming.
Luo Fei was slightly surprised.
"Oh? Su Jianfan?"
"What did you find?"
Luo Fei was somewhat taken aback.
Su Jianfan left it hanging for a moment.
"Mr. Luo, I checked this IP address—turns out it’s from Zhao Ligang’s home. And the timestamp is from before his death. Do you think it’s possible that Zhao Ligang was secretly chatting online with Lin Qingqing, wanting to pursue her, but when he saw that she and Zhu Xiaolin seemed to be hitting it off, he decided to borrow a knife to kill and frame someone else?"
But hearing this,
Luo Fei suddenly saw the light.
"Su Jianfan, even if Zhao Ligang was a womanizer, he wasn’t at home at the time. So the person messaging Miss Lin couldn’t be him."
Su Jianfan froze.
"If it wasn’t him, then who was it?"
Before he could finish asking,
the answer dawned on him.
"Mr. Luo, you don’t mean... that man, do you?"
Su Jianfan’s question
earned a noncommittal reaction from Luo Fei.
"Exactly. You got it right."
Hearing Luo Fei’s analysis,
Su Jianfan hesitated.
"But Mr. Luo, given the situation now, how are we going to get Mr. Lü to open up and admit what he did?"
"Don’t worry, I have a way."
Luo Fei spoke, his tone laden with meaning.
This left Su Jianfan rather surprised.
Then Luo Fei laid out his entire meticulous plan.
