Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System

Chapter 69 — The Living Forest

Sponsored

The forest moved.

Not slowly.

Not naturally.

The enormous trees twisted as if they were waking from a centuries-long sleep. Their branches scraped against one another, creating a sound that reminded Azrael of distant thunder.

Roots tore through the earth.

Some were as thin as ropes.

Others were thick enough to crush buildings.

Azrael tightened his grip around Astraeus.

"Stay close."

Seraphina nodded.

Caelan lowered his stance.

"Which way?"

Azrael activated Origin Perception.

The world immediately changed.

The forest no longer looked like a collection of trees.

It looked like one enormous organism.

Every root was connected.

Every tree shared the same energy.

Every movement came from a single consciousness.

And somewhere beneath them...

Seven faint life signatures remained.

"I found them."

Seraphina looked at him.

"Where?"

"Underground."

Azrael pointed toward the eastern side of the forest.

"About three hundred meters that way."

Caelan looked at the countless roots blocking their path.

"Then we cut through."

Azrael shook his head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because the forest wants us to."

Caelan frowned.

Azrael pointed toward the ground.

"The roots aren’t attacking randomly."

Seraphina looked closer.

"They’re herding us."

"Exactly."

The forest suddenly became silent.

Azrael smiled.

"Which means the direction they want us to go..."

"...is probably the direction we shouldn’t."

A branch suddenly swung toward them.

BOOM!

Azrael blocked it with Astraeus.

The impact pushed him several meters backward.

Seraphina moved immediately.

Her golden blade flashed.

SLASH!

The branch split apart.

Instead of falling, however, both halves transformed into enormous serpentine roots.

One attacked Seraphina.

The other rushed toward Caelan.

Caelan spun his spear.

CLANG!

The root wrapped around the weapon.

His expression changed.

"It’s stronger than it looks!"

Azrael appeared beside him.

He struck the root with the flat of Astraeus rather than cutting it.

A pulse of resonance traveled through the weapon.

The root suddenly loosened.

Caelan pulled his spear free.

Azrael looked at the root.

Stone Resonance.

The technique was still weak.

But it had worked.

"Don’t destroy them."

Seraphina looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because they’re connected to the entire forest."

He stared at the wounded branch.

"If we keep cutting everything..."

"...we might make it angry."

Caelan gave him a strange look.

"It’s already trying to kill us."

Azrael smiled.

"Then let’s avoid making it angrier."

They moved deeper into the forest.

This time, Azrael led them away from the direction the roots were forcing them toward.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then Seraphina stopped.

"Wait."

Azrael turned.

"What?"

She pointed toward a tree.

"There."

A small mark had been carved into the bark.

Three diagonal lines.

Caelan walked closer.

"That’s an Academy rescue mark."

Azrael examined it.

"How old?"

"At least three days."

Seraphina looked around.

"The missing disciples came this way."

Azrael nodded.

"Then we’re getting closer."

They followed the marks.

One after another.

Some were carved into trees.

Others were scratched into rocks.

The farther they went, the more damaged the forest became.

Broken weapons appeared beneath the leaves.

Pieces of torn clothing.

Bloodstains.

Then—

They found a body.

Caelan immediately rushed forward.

"He’s alive!"

The young disciple was unconscious, his body covered in deep wounds.

Seraphina knelt beside him.

"His injuries are several days old."

She placed her hand above his chest.

Golden light spread through her fingers.

The disciple’s breathing stabilized.

Azrael looked around.

"Where are the others?"

The injured disciple’s eyes suddenly opened.

He grabbed Seraphina’s wrist.

"Don’t..."

His voice was barely audible.

"Don’t go deeper."

Seraphina leaned closer.

"Where are your companions?"

The disciple’s eyes filled with fear.

"They’re..."

He swallowed.

"Below."

"Below where?"

He pointed toward the trees.

"The forest..."

His breathing became uneven.

"...isn’t the monster."

Azrael’s expression changed.

"Then what is?"

The disciple looked directly at him.

"The thing beneath it."

His eyes rolled back.

Seraphina immediately checked his condition.

"He passed out again."

Caelan looked at Azrael.

"Something beneath the forest?"

Azrael remained silent.

He could feel it now.

A faint pulse.

Coming from beneath the ground.

Thump.

A pause.

Thump.

Another pause.

It sounded like a heartbeat.

Azrael’s expression became serious.

"The entire forest..."

"...is protecting something."

They continued.

This time, they moved much more carefully.

The rescue marks became more frequent.

Then they disappeared.

Azrael stopped.

"We’re close."

Caelan looked around.

"How close?"

Azrael pointed downward.

"Directly beneath us."

Seraphina stared at the ground.

"How do we get there?"

Azrael placed his hand against the soil.

Stone Resonance activated.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then his eyes widened.

"I can feel a passage."

Caelan stepped forward.

"Can you open it?"

"Maybe."

Azrael closed his eyes.

Instead of forcing energy into the ground, he listened.

The soil.

The roots.

The stone beneath them.

Everything had a rhythm.

He remembered the old master’s words.

Everything in existence has a resonance.

Azrael slowly adjusted his breathing.

His heartbeat became steady.

Then—

He tapped the ground.

Ding.

A circular pattern appeared beneath his feet.

The earth separated.

A staircase descended into darkness.

Seraphina stared.

"You found it."

Azrael smiled.

"No."

He looked into the dark passage.

"It allowed us to find it."

Caelan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Azrael didn’t answer.

Something about the forest had changed.

It wasn’t attacking them anymore.

It was watching.

Almost...

Waiting.

The three descended.

The deeper they went, the colder it became.

The roots surrounding the tunnel pulsed faintly with green light.

Strange symbols covered the walls.

Seraphina touched one.

"This writing..."

Azrael looked over.

"Do you recognize it?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Caelan examined another symbol.

"These aren’t from the Academy."

Azrael stared at them.

Something about the symbols felt familiar.

Not because he had seen them before.

Because his body recognized them.

His System appeared.

"Ancient Origin Script detected"

Translation incomplete.

Estimated connection: 18%.

Azrael’s eyes narrowed.

"Origin Script."

Seraphina looked at him.

"What does it say?"

"I don’t know."

He touched the wall.

The moment his fingers made contact—

BOOM!

The entire tunnel lit up.

Thousands of symbols appeared.

For a brief moment, Azrael saw an enormous tree.

Two figures stood beneath it.

One was surrounded by golden light.

The other was covered in darkness.

They stood side by side.

Then the vision vanished.

Azrael stepped backward.

Seraphina caught his arm.

"What did you see?"

He looked at her.

"You."

Her expression froze.

"And you."

Neither spoke.

Caelan looked between them.

"Are you saying the symbols showed both of you?"

Azrael nodded slowly.

Before anyone could say anything else—

A scream echoed from below.

"HELP!"

The three immediately rushed forward.

They reached the bottom of the tunnel.

A massive underground chamber opened before them.

Seven disciples were trapped inside a giant cage made of roots.

Some were unconscious.

Others were injured.

But all seven were alive.

Seraphina immediately moved forward.

"We found them!"

Azrael stopped her.

"Wait."

She turned.

"What?"

He pointed toward the center of the chamber.

Something enormous was growing there.

A giant black seed.

It was surrounded by roots.

And it was beating.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

The seven disciples weren’t trapped randomly.

The roots connected their bodies to the seed.

Caelan’s face changed.

"It’s absorbing their energy."

Azrael raised Astraeus.

"We need to get them out."

Suddenly, one of the injured disciples screamed.

The roots tightened.

The black seed began glowing.

A deep voice echoed through the chamber.

Not from the trees.

Not from the seed.

From everywhere.

"Why have you come?"

Azrael stepped forward.

"To retrieve our people."

Silence.

Then the voice answered.

"They entered seeking power."

"They disturbed my awakening."

"Now they belong to me."

Seraphina’s golden aura erupted.

"They belong to no one."

The chamber shook.

The black seed cracked.

A single eye opened within it.

Azrael’s System appeared.

"Extreme Threat Detected"

Unknown Entity: Dormant

Estimated Classification: Beyond current analysis

Warning: Do not allow entity to fully awaken.

Hidden Objective Updated.

Prevent the Awakening.

Reward: Unknown

Failure: Catastrophic

Azrael stared at the message.

Then he looked at Seraphina.

She already had her sword drawn.

Caelan raised his spear.

The seven disciples watched them desperately.

Azrael slowly smiled.

"Looks like the mission just changed."

The black eye opened wider.

The entire forest trembled.

And beneath the Astral Wilds...

Something ancient finally began to wake.
