Chapter 78 — The Silent Ruins
The group continued toward the ruins.
The closer they got, the quieter the valley became.
The sounds of battles behind them slowly disappeared.
Even the wind seemed weaker around the ancient structures.
Lyanna glanced at the largest building.
"These ruins are older than the others."
Caelan nodded.
"The construction is different too."
Orin looked at the massive stone entrance.
"How different?"
Caelan examined the carvings.
"I don’t know."
Azrael stepped closer.
The same circular symbol appeared above the entrance.
He stopped.
Seraphina noticed.
"It’s the same symbol."
Azrael nodded.
"The one from the first ruin."
Lyanna frowned.
"Then these ruins are connected."
"Probably."
Azrael placed his hand against the stone.
Nothing happened.
He removed it.
"Let’s go inside."
They entered carefully.
The interior was dark.
Unlike the first ruin, there were no murals or crystals illuminating the walls.
Only a long corridor stretched ahead.
Their footsteps echoed through the darkness.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Orin lowered his voice.
"I don’t like this place."
Lyanna smiled faintly.
"You said that about the last ruin."
"And I was right."
Caelan chuckled.
"Fair enough."
Seraphina created a small sphere of golden light.
The corridor became visible.
Several doors lined both sides.
Most were sealed.
One stood slightly open.
Azrael stopped.
"That one."
Lyanna examined it.
"No traps."
Caelan looked surprised.
"You can tell?"
"Not completely."
She pointed toward the floor.
"But there are no pressure marks."
Azrael nodded.
"Let’s check it."
They entered.
The room contained dozens of stone shelves.
Most were empty.
A few held broken objects.
Old weapons.
Fragments of armor.
Cracked containers.
And several books that had turned almost completely to dust.
Caelan carefully picked up one of the remaining books.
The moment he touched it—
WHOOSH!
The pages dissolved.
Caelan sighed.
"Six hundred thousand years of history..."
"And I destroyed it in one second."
Seraphina laughed.
"At least you tried."
Azrael walked toward the back of the room.
Something had caught his attention.
A small stone tablet rested beneath a layer of dust.
He picked it up.
The circular symbol was carved into its surface.
But this time, there was something beneath it.
A single sentence.
Azrael brushed away the dust.
The words became clearer.
"Power begins when understanding replaces possession."
He stared at the sentence.
It reminded him of the old master.
The pebble.
The sword.
Resonance.
Everything he had been taught beyond the Thirteenth Gate seemed connected.
Seraphina looked over his shoulder.
"What does it say?"
Azrael showed her.
She read it silently.
"Understanding replaces possession..."
Caelan frowned.
"That’s a strange philosophy."
Azrael shook his head.
"Not strange."
He remembered the old master’s words.
A weapon was only an extension of understanding.
The stone had never been the real lesson.
He placed the tablet back.
"Let’s continue."
They explored several more rooms.
Most contained nothing useful.
One held broken training weapons.
Another contained an empty library.
A third had a large circular formation engraved into the floor.
Caelan crouched beside it.
"This one is still active."
Azrael activated Origin Perception.
Energy slowly flowed beneath the formation.
"It connects somewhere."
"Where?"
Azrael looked toward the wall.
"Below us."
Orin frowned.
"So there’s another level."
Lyanna searched the room.
"There’s probably a hidden entrance."
They spent several minutes looking.
Eventually, Seraphina noticed something.
"Here."
She pointed toward a small indentation in the wall.
Azrael pressed it.
Click.
The floor moved.
A staircase appeared.
Orin stared downward.
"Of course."
Lyanna smiled.
"You wanted to explore."
"I didn’t say I wanted stairs."
They descended.
The staircase seemed to go much deeper than the ruins above suggested.
After several minutes, they reached another chamber.
This one was enormous.
A circular platform occupied the center.
Around it stood twelve stone statues.
Each statue held a different weapon.
Sword.
Spear.
Staff.
Bow.
Axe.
Dagger.
And several weapons Azrael had never seen before.
Caelan slowly walked around them.
"This looks like a training chamber."
Azrael nodded.
"Probably."
A faint light appeared.
Then a System notification appeared before everyone.
[Ancient Training Chamber discovered.]
Trial available.
Participants may attempt the Trial of Twelve Paths.
Requirement: One participant must enter the central platform.
Reward: Unknown.
Orin immediately looked at Azrael.
"You’re going to do it, aren’t you?"
Azrael smiled.
"Probably."
Seraphina sighed.
"Of course."
Caelan studied the statues.
"Be careful."
Azrael stepped toward the platform.
The moment his foot touched it—
BOOM!
The twelve statues lit up.
The room shook.
A mechanical voice echoed through the chamber.
"Trial beginning."
The sword statue moved.
Its weapon pointed directly at Azrael.
Then—
The first opponent stepped off its pedestal.
Azrael drew Astraeus.
The stone warrior raised its sword.
Neither moved.
For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.
Then the warrior attacked.
CLANG!
Astraeus blocked the strike.
Azrael immediately noticed something strange.
The warrior wasn’t using overwhelming strength.
It was testing him.
A second strike came.
Azrael blocked.
A third.
He stepped aside.
A fourth.
He parried.
His eyes narrowed.
"This isn’t a normal battle."
The warrior suddenly changed its stance.
Azrael recognized it.
A sword technique.
Not one he had learned.
But one that followed the same principles as the Nameless Sword Saint’s teachings.
Azrael’s expression became serious.
He wasn’t fighting a monster.
He was being taught.
The warrior attacked again.
Azrael responded.
Steel collided repeatedly.
CLANG!
CLANG!
CLANG!
Outside the platform, Seraphina watched carefully.
"He isn’t trying to defeat it."
Caelan nodded.
"He’s studying it."
Lyanna smiled.
"That’s very Azrael."
The battle continued.
Every exchange revealed another movement.
Another principle.
Another weakness.
Azrael slowly adapted.
Then the stone warrior suddenly stopped.
Its sword lowered.
The System appeared.
[First Path understood.]
Sword Resonance increased.
Trial Progress: 1/12
Azrael’s eyes widened slightly.
He understood.
The twelve statues weren’t twelve opponents.
They were twelve lessons.
He looked toward the remaining eleven statues.
Then smiled.
"Interesting."
Seraphina crossed her arms.
"How long are you planning to stay there?"
Azrael looked at the remaining paths.
"Until I understand them."
Caelan laughed.
"Then we’re probably going to be here for a while."
Azrael raised Astraeus.
The second statue stepped forward.
This time...
It carried a spear.
And Azrael knew the real challenge had only just begun.
