Chapter 23 – The Temple of Dawn
A gentle breeze swept across the Sanctuary Plains.
The golden butterflies left behind by the mysterious little girl slowly vanished into the air, leaving only silence behind.
No one spoke.
Azrael remained staring at the floating temple in the distance.
His thoughts were in turmoil.
"My son..."
"Your mother never abandoned you."
Those words echoed repeatedly in his mind.
Seraphina gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"What did you see?"
Azrael looked at her.
"I..."
He hesitated for a moment.
"I met someone."
"He called me his son."
Everyone froze.
Marcus was the first to speak.
"...Wait."
"What?"
Ryan blinked.
"You met your father?"
"I don’t know."
"I couldn’t see everything."
"The memory broke apart before he could explain."
Seraphina lowered her gaze.
"So..."
"We really do have parents somewhere."
Azrael smiled faintly.
"I think so."
"And I think..."
"They’ve been trying to protect us."
For some reason...
Hearing those words filled Seraphina with warmth instead of sadness.
She had always wondered why they had been abandoned.
Now...
For the first time...
She believed there might be another answer.
Elena quietly watched the twins.
She didn’t interrupt.
She knew this wasn’t the right time.
The expedition continued toward the floating temple.
As they walked deeper into the Sanctuary Plains, the peaceful scenery slowly began to change.
The grass became taller.
Ancient stone statues appeared on both sides of the road.
Every statue depicted an angel.
Some carried swords.
Others books.
Some staffs.
One statue, however, stood apart from the rest.
Unlike the others...
It had one white wing...
And one black wing.
Its face had long since eroded away.
Only a single inscription remained beneath it.
Balance is not born from power.
It is born from choice.
Azrael stopped walking.
"Balance..."
Raphael had used that word before.
Oblivion was never meant to destroy everything.
Genesis was never meant to create without limit.
One without the other would eventually bring ruin.
The twins exchanged a silent glance.
Neither needed to say anything.
They understood.
Nearly an hour later...
The road finally ended.
Before them stood an enormous staircase leading toward the floating island.
Thousands of steps stretched upward into the clouds.
At the bottom stood another stone gate.
This one was smaller.
Above it glowed ancient golden letters.
Temple of Dawn
As Azrael approached...
The gate opened by itself.
The deep voice returned.
"Welcome..."
"Heirs of Genesis and Oblivion."
"The First Trial awaits."
The System appeared.
Dungeon Trial
Temple of Dawn
Stage One
Hall of Reflection
Objective:
Face Yourself.
Failure:
Expulsion from the dungeon.
Marcus scratched his head.
"That sounds... suspicious."
Sophia nodded.
"I don’t like anything with ’reflection’ in the name."
Ryan forced a laugh.
"Maybe it’s just a mirror."
The moment he finished speaking...
The floor beneath everyone glowed.
Golden light engulfed the expedition.
Azrael opened his eyes.
He was alone.
The temple had disappeared.
Instead...
He found himself standing inside what looked like his childhood home.
Everything was exactly the same.
The old sofa.
The tiny television.
The family photographs hanging on the wall.
His heartbeat quickened.
"This..."
"...can’t be real."
The kitchen door opened.
A familiar woman walked out carrying a tray of food.
She smiled warmly.
"Breakfast is ready."
Azrael froze.
"...Mom?"
Emily Ashbourne.
She looked exactly as she had before the apocalypse.
Healthy.
Happy.
Alive.
She laughed softly.
"Why are you just standing there?"
"Hurry."
"Your sister is already eating."
Azrael slowly walked toward the dining room.
There...
Sat Seraphina.
Or rather...
A younger version of her.
She happily waved.
"You’re late again!"
For one brief moment...
He wanted to believe it.
To forget everything.
To stay here forever.
Then...
The System quietly appeared in the corner of his vision.
Warning
Mental Trial.
Do not lose yourself.
Azrael closed his eyes.
When he opened them again...
He noticed something strange.
The family photograph on the wall.
There were four people.
Him.
Seraphina.
David.
Emily.
But...
The fourth person’s face was blurred.
No matter how hard he looked...
He couldn’t recognize them.
Emily noticed his gaze.
Her smile slowly faded.
"You’re looking for someone."
Azrael nodded.
"...Who are they?"
Emily remained silent.
Instead...
She walked toward him.
She gently placed a hand on his cheek.
"My son..."
"No matter who gave birth to you..."
"You will always be my child."
Tears filled Azrael’s eyes.
"I know."
"You and Dad..."
"...are my real parents."
Emily smiled proudly.
"You’ve grown into a good man."
The room suddenly began breaking apart.
Golden cracks spread across the walls.
Emily slowly stepped backward.
"It seems..."
"...our time is over."
Azrael reached toward her.
"Wait!"
"I still have so many things I wanted to say."
Emily shook her head gently.
"You don’t need to."
"We’ve always known."
"Your father would tell you..."
"...to protect your sister."
"And I’d tell you..."
"...don’t carry everything by yourself."
She smiled one last time.
"We’re proud of you."
The world shattered into golden light.
Meanwhile...
Seraphina stood inside another illusion.
She sat in the hospital room where David had stayed after suffering a heart attack years before the apocalypse.
He smiled weakly from the bed.
"You’ve been crying again."
She shook her head.
"I’m fine."
He chuckled.
"You were never a good liar."
He slowly reached into his pocket.
Pulling out an old silver pendant.
"I wanted to give you this..."
"But I never found the right time."
Seraphina frowned.
"...What is it?"
"It’s how we found you."
Her breathing stopped.
"What?"
David looked toward the window.
"The night you and your brother came into our lives..."
"...this pendant was wrapped in your blanket."
"It always felt..."
"...too precious to belong to ordinary children."
He placed it in her hands.
"I kept it safe."
"I thought..."
"...one day..."
"...you might need it."
The hospital room began collapsing.
"No!"
Seraphina reached for him.
David smiled warmly.
"I know you’ll find the truth."
"But promise me something."
She nodded desperately.
"Anything."
"No matter what you discover..."
"...never forget where home is."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I promise."
David’s figure dissolved into countless particles of light.
The silver pendant remained in her hands.
Outside the illusion...
Golden light surrounded Seraphina.
When the light faded...
The pendant was still there.
Not an illusion.
A real object.
The System immediately identified it.
Unknown Artifact
Name:
Pendant of Astra
Status:
Sealed
Owner:
Seraphina
Information Locked.
At that exact moment...
Far away in the First Heaven...
Auriel suddenly turned toward the Celestial Mirror.
Her eyes widened.
"The pendant..."
Raphael looked equally surprised.
"It survived."
Auriel gently touched the mirror.
"Emily..."
"You kept your promise."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Thank you..."
"...for protecting the only thing I could leave behind."
Back inside the Temple of Dawn, Azrael and Seraphina emerged from their separate trials at the same time.
The first thing they did...
Was hug each other.
Neither said a word.
Neither needed to.
They had both seen the people who had raised them.
And they both understood something now.
Family...
Was not determined by blood alone.
The System chimed.
Stage One Cleared

Golden light descended upon the expedition.
Azrael and Seraphina rose from Level 7 to Level 9, while the rest of the team also gained significant experience.
Before anyone could celebrate...
The enormous doors at the end of the hall slowly opened.
Beyond them...
A grand sanctuary bathed in golden light came into view.
At its center stood a single stone pedestal.
Resting upon it...
Was a magnificent white feather nearly as long as a sword.
It radiated an overwhelming aura.
The moment the twins looked at it...
The feather pulsed.
As if it had been waiting for them.
And somewhere beyond the sanctuary...
A deep voice whispered through the ancient halls.
"The first key..."
"...has finally found its rightful heirs."
