Chapter 50 – The Feather Beyond Heaven
The feather was warm.
Not with heat, but with a quiet vitality that pulsed like a heartbeat against Azrael’s palm.
It weighed almost nothing.
Yet the moment his fingers closed around it, the world around him seemed to grow distant.
The shattered arena faded into silence.
The spectators disappeared.
Even the Trial Tower’s overwhelming aura became little more than a whisper.
For a brief instant, there was only him...
...and the feather.
Then a memory that wasn’t his own flashed before his eyes.
A boundless sky.
Stars drifting like grains of sand.
An endless sea of golden clouds stretching farther than imagination could reach.
Countless winged beings knelt in reverence.
Not before a king.
Not before an emperor.
Before a tree.
It stood alone at the center of that endless sky.
Its trunk shone like crystallized starlight, while its branches reached across what looked like entire galaxies. Every leaf contained a world. Every fruit carried the birth and death of civilizations. Rivers of laws flowed through its roots, weaving existence together.
Azrael instinctively knew one thing.
This tree wasn’t in a realm.
Realms existed because of it.
A single feather drifted from one of its branches.
The same feather now resting in his hand.
Before he could understand the vision, it shattered like glass.
His senses returned to the arena.
The feather still lay in his palm.
Nothing had changed.
And yet...
Everything had.
The Trial Tower trembled.
Not violently.
Reverently.
Golden runes spread across the white stone beneath Azrael’s feet.
The surviving participants looked around in confusion.
"What now?"
Marcus muttered, gripping his sword.
Ryan narrowed his eyes.
"The trial isn’t over..."
Seraphina stared at her brother.
She couldn’t explain it, but something about his presence felt... different.
Not stronger.
Deeper.
Like looking into a night sky and suddenly realizing it had no end.
A soft chime echoed inside Azrael’s mind.
The Celestial Evolution System finally spoke.
Unique Item Acquired.
Origin Feather
Classification: Unknown
Rank: Unmeasurable
Status: Sealed
Analysis Failed.
For the first time since awakening the System...
It failed.
Every line of information dissolved into static.
A new message appeared.
Current Authority Insufficient.
Evolution Required.
Then even that message vanished.
Azrael frowned.
"So even the System can’t identify it."
"Not surprising."
Astraeus’ voice was unusually solemn.
"There are things older than Systems."
"Older than worlds."
"Older than the laws that govern existence."
Azrael glanced at the feather again.
"What exactly are you?"
The feather gave no answer.
Yet for the briefest moment...
It pulsed once.
Almost as though it had heard him.
The arena suddenly shook.
Cracks spread across the white stone.
Not from damage.
From transformation.
The Trial Tower’s ancient voice echoed through the battlefield.
"Observation Trial..."
"...completed."
"Final Evaluation..."
"...commencing."
Golden pillars of light descended around every remaining participant.
Some looked relieved.
Others grew tense.
Lucian sighed quietly.
"So it’s finally over."
"No."
Valeria replied.
"I don’t think this is the end."
High above the battlefield, the crimson sky split apart.
A staircase of pure light descended from the heavens.
At its summit stood twelve colossal gates.
Each gate was different.
One burned with silver flames.
Another was formed entirely from crystal.
One seemed woven from darkness itself.
The last...
The last could not be seen clearly.
Whenever anyone tried to focus on it, their vision blurred.
The Trial Tower spoke again.
"The Twelve Gates."
"The path followed by every Academy student."
"You may choose only one."
A murmur spread through the participants.
Marcus scratched his head.
"I thought we’d just pass the trial."
Ryan laughed.
"Apparently graduating from almost dying isn’t enough."
Even Azrael looked intrigued.
Choose a gate?
Before anyone could move, Headmaster Orion’s voice echoed through the sky.
"You are not choosing your future."
"You are choosing your first teacher."
"The Gates are alive."
"They observe."
"They judge."
"And they never make mistakes."
The words settled heavily over the battlefield.
Immediately, several participants became nervous.
Choosing the wrong teacher could shape their entire path.
One by one, students stepped forward.
A young swordsman approached the Third Gate.
The crystal gate opened.
He disappeared inside.
A mage approached the Seventh Gate.
It accepted her.
Another participant walked toward the Fifth Gate.
Nothing happened.
After several moments, the Tower teleported him before the Ninth Gate instead.
The participants quickly understood.
Their choices didn’t matter.
The Gates made the final decision.
Marcus marched confidently toward the massive bronze gate.
"I like this one."
The gate remained shut.
"...Seriously?"
He tried pushing it.
Nothing.
The spectators couldn’t help laughing.
Suddenly, another gate several places away burst open with a deafening clang.
A booming voice echoed from within.
"LOUD ONE."
Marcus blinked.
"...Did it just insult me?"
Ryan grinned.
"I think it likes you."
Still muttering to himself, Marcus walked toward the newly opened gate.
It accepted him immediately.
Ryan approached a deep blue gate covered in flowing rivers.
Without hesitation, it welcomed him.
Lucian disappeared into a gate surrounded by endless swords.
Valeria entered one wrapped in silver chains.
One after another...
The remaining participants vanished.
Soon, only two figures remained in the arena.
Azrael.
Seraphina.
The siblings exchanged a quiet smile.
Neither spoke.
Words weren’t necessary.
Seraphina stepped forward first.
The moment she did...
Three gates trembled.
One golden.
One emerald.
One radiant white.
The surrounding space filled with warm light.
Golden feathers drifted gently from the sky.
The Tower fell silent for several seconds.
Then it announced,
"Multiple Gates have requested Candidate Seraphina."
A wave of astonishment swept through the remaining professors.
Headmaster Orion’s calm expression cracked for the first time.
"Three?"
Professor Duran whispered.
"I’ve only read about this..."
Seraphina looked back at Azrael.
He simply smiled.
"Go."
She nodded before walking toward the golden gate.
The moment she crossed its threshold, six radiant wings of light briefly unfolded behind her.
Then she disappeared.
Silence returned.
Only Azrael remained.
He slowly looked toward the twelve gates.
Nothing happened.
One second.
Five seconds.
Ten.
The gates remained perfectly still.
Marcus, now watching through a projection from within his own gate, frowned.
"What’s taking so long?"
Ryan’s expression gradually became serious.
"This..."
"...doesn’t feel normal."
Headmaster Orion stared at the motionless gates.
A strange feeling settled in his chest.
For the first time in centuries...
The Twelve Gates appeared...
Uncertain.
Then, without warning—
Every gate in the sky closed at once.
The sound echoed through the Trial Tower like the tolling of an ancient bell.
Darkness swallowed the heavens.
Even the Tower itself fell silent.
A deep crack spread across the empty sky.
Not from one of the twelve gates.
From somewhere far beyond them.
The crack widened.
An ancient gate, so enormous that it dwarfed all twelve combined, slowly emerged from the void.
Its surface was neither gold nor silver.
It was impossible to describe.
It seemed to contain every color and none at all.
Ancient symbols older than language flowed across its surface before fading into nothingness.
The pressure it released caused the twelve original gates to tremble as though acknowledging a higher authority.
The Trial Tower’s voice returned.
For the first time...
It sounded genuinely shocked.
"...Impossible."
The words echoed across every floor.
"...The..."
It paused.
As though struggling to pronounce the name.
"...The Thirteenth Gate..."
"...has awakened."
And throughout the endless heavens, ancient beings who had watched in silence slowly rose from their thrones.
Something that should never have opened...
Had just recognized a single candidate.
