Chapter 99: Struggling new form

Kale adjusted the grip on his daggers as he stood at the edge of the damp thicket. The air in the lower trenches was heavy with the scent of damp earth and the musk of a Feral nest. He looked down at the matte black entity on his shoulder, its three wedge-shaped heads tracking the movements in the shadows.

"Neo, charge," Kale commanded, his voice a low whisper that carried the weight of a decree. He felt the beast’s muscles tense through their shared bond before it launched itself forward. The creature lunged toward the nest with a high-pitched, lizard-like screech that lacked the usual draconic resonance.

As Neo hit the first line of the Feral rank beasts, the struggle became apparent almost immediately. In the Nemesis Hydra state, Neo was a creature of aerodynamic grace and overwhelming physical presence. Now, it moved with a grounded, terrestrial clumsiness that it had not yet mastered.

The transition from a winged predator to a ground-bound chameleon was a jarring shift in combat mechanics. Without the draconic wings to provide instantaneous bursts of speed or aerial pivots, Neo was forced to rely purely on its four thickened limbs. Its movements were sluggish compared to its previous explosive agility.

Kale watched with narrowed eyes as a pair of Feral-rank wolves snapped at Neo’s flanks. In its original form, the Hydra’s shimmering green scales would have reflected such strikes with ease. But the obsidian hide of the Black Chameleon state was far more vulnerable to physical trauma.

A shallow gash appeared on Neo’s side as one of the wolves found purchase with its claws. The beast hissed in irritation, but the lack of structural familiarity hindered its reaction time. It tried to snap at the wolf with its central head, only to miscalculate the distance.

In Hydra form, Neo’s long, elegant necks provided an incredible reach that allowed it to strike targets from multiple angles simultaneously. Now, those necks were shortened and muscular, designed for the compact stealth of a chameleon.

The advantage of range had been completely stripped away.

Neo struggled much more greatly within the nest of Feral rank beasts than Kale had expected. The creature was being swarmed, forced to tank hits that it usually would have avoided with a simple flap of its wings. It was a brutal awakening to the limitations of its new morphology.

Despite the mounting injuries on his beast, Kale did not step forward to help. He remained at the edge of the clearing, his analytical mind recording every stumble and every failed strike. This was a necessary crucible for the Hydra’s evolution into a more versatile predator.

The forest floor was soon stained with green blood as Neo fought with a desperate, grinding tenacity. It used its three heads to bite and tear, but the lack of flight meant it was constantly surrounded. For every Feral beast it crushed, two more took its place in the rotation.

Kale felt the phantom stabs of pain through the soul tether, but he kept his face a stoic mask. He knew that if he intervened now, he would be coddling a creature that was destined to slaughter the deific Dragons. Neo needed to understand the fragility of its current state to grow beyond it.

Eventually, the dregs of the nest were scattered, leaving only the strongest entity behind. The leader of the nest, a Greater Alpha-rank beast with a hide of jagged stone, emerged from a burrow. It loomed over the bloodied Neo, its eyes glowing with a predatory hunger.

Neo was already badly injured, its obsidian scales dulled by dust and gore. It could barely stand on its four legs, its breathing ragged and heavy in the humid air. The Alpha beast let out a low, rumbling growl, sensing that its opponent was on the verge of total collapse.

Kale’s hand twitched toward the hilt of his dagger as he watched the Alpha prepare to pounce. He hesitated, torn between his duty as a tamer to protect his beast and his desire as a researcher to see the limit. The thought of losing Neo here, in a nameless trench, sent a chill through his core.

But before he could move, a wave of pure dissatisfaction and incandescent anger reached him through the bond. It was a roar of Neo’s thoughts, clear and sharp enough to make Kale’s head ache. The creature was furious that its master was even considering an intervention.

Neo’s unchecked pride, a trait inherited from its draconic foundation, wouldn’t allow the creature to lose. It did not like to be underestimated by Kale, nor did it want its victory to be tainted by assistance. It was a monarch in a peasant’s skin, demanding its right to struggle.

The Alpha beast lunged, its stone claws aimed at Neo’s central head. Instead of dodging, Neo met the strike head on, using its own wedge-shaped skull to deflect the blow. The impact sent a tremor through the ground, but the Hydra did not falter this time.

In the end, Neo barely managed to win against the Alpha-rank beast through sheer, unadulterated grit. It waited for a moment of overextension from the stone predator before all three heads latched onto the Alpha’s throat. With a final, desperate yank, it tore the creature’s life away.

Neo collapsed beside the carcass, its body trembling with exhaustion and the shock of its wounds. It could have simply transformed back to its green hydra state if it had wanted to heal instantly. The Octagon trait would have mended its flesh in a heartbeat if it shifted forms.

But again, out of pure reptilian pride, Neo did not do so. It remained in the battered Black Chameleon form, refusing to take the easy path toward recovery. It was a display of stubbornness that even Kale found himself respecting as he walked into the clearing.

The Chimeric Hydra won through sheer determination, proving that its soul was far more powerful than its current vessel. Kale analysed the whole battle with cold eyes, noting the countless flaws in Neo’s terrestrial combat. He looked at the mangled obsidian scales and the stunted necks.

In its current state, the Black Chameleon form could truly be considered trash compared to the majestic might of Neo’s original form. It was a biological downgrade in terms of raw power, defence, and mobility. It was a creature that lacked the divine grace of the Nemesis Hydra.
