Chapter 56: Thorough Preparations, Discovering a Light

Fortunately, the two survivors who had previously snatched Qin Haonan’s fish brought them some tools. Ren Yuanyang quickly got to work, drilling suitable holes into the wooden planks and plastic bottles Lu Jiamei handed him.

Then, the two of them worked together to stuff the Spray Melons into the holes.

"These Spray Melons are barely noticeable on the planks. They’ll be perfect for ambushes, with the highest chance of success!" Ren Yuanyang pointed at the Spray Melons stuffed into the planks and ordered, "Place all of these around the outside of the speedboat and the container."

Lu Jiamei nodded in agreement and walked out with the planks.

Once on top of the container, Lu Jiamei found a few discreet spots. She secured the planks at a specific angle to ensure they would fire accurately at anyone who approached.

On the speedboat, she fixed the planks to the railings.

Qin Haonan saw what Lu Jiamei was doing and asked curiously, "Sister Mei, are you improving our defenses?"

"How can a few small planks improve our defenses? Take a closer look at what’s on them!" Lu Jiamei replied, rolling her eyes.

Only then did Qin Haonan take a closer look at the planks. "Huh? Why did you mount the Spray Melons on the planks?"

But he immediately understood. "I get it! We can connect the melon stems with string and trigger the Spray Melons while hiding behind them!"

"Mhm, it was the Boss’s idea. There are also the plastic bottles. We’ll tie those to sticks, so we just have to reach out and pull the stems!" Lu Jiamei nodded slightly as she continued.

"What a great idea! With this setup, we’re much safer, and they’re more like shotguns!" Qin Haonan said, pleasantly surprised. "Fire one shot, replace the Spray Melon—it’s just like reloading!"

"Mhm, how’s your Iron Melon throwing practice coming along?" Lu Jiamei asked casually.

"My accuracy is pretty high within ten meters!" Qin Haonan was extremely confident. "But beyond ten meters, it’s all up to luck!"

Xin Wan replied, a little embarrassed, "I can only guarantee some accuracy within eight meters."

"When the time comes to actually throw the Iron Melons, Haonan and I will handle it. You should stick to operating the Spray Melon traps," Lu Jiamei said to Xin Wan with a smile.

Xin Wan nodded. ’If I threw the Iron Melons, I might end up hitting one of our own. Better not to cause trouble.’

The sky slowly darkened, but the pursuers from the Feixiang still hadn’t appeared.

"Boss, do you think they might not be coming?" Lu Jiamei’s brows furrowed slightly.

’Did I really guess wrong? Do they not care about this experimental data?’ Ren Yuanyang began to doubt his earlier judgment.

"Isn’t it better if they don’t come? We can save our Spray Melons and Iron Melons!" Qin Haonan felt this was a good thing.

Ren Yuanyang shook his head slightly. "Whether they come or not, let’s eat first. Haonan, you take the first watch. We’ll switch with you after we’re done!"

"Okay, Boss!" Qin Haonan replied.

For dinner, Ren Yuanyang again had a bowl of crocodile blood porridge and a crocodile steak.

Lu Jiamei and the others ate instant noodles with a small piece of crocodile meat.

After several consecutive meals of it, Ren Yuanyang had started to get used to the metallic taste of the crocodile blood porridge. Plus, with the Feixiang on his mind, he didn’t dwell on the taste and quickly finished his dinner.

"Lu Jiamei, double-check how secure all the trigger lines are. Make sure we can pull the Spray Melons’ stems cleanly when the time comes!" Ren Yuanyang ordered as he stood up.

"Yes!" Lu Jiamei nodded.

Ren Yuanyang walked out of the speedboat and called to Qin Haonan, who was on watch, "Haonan, come and eat!"

"Alright, Boss!" Qin Haonan leaped directly from the top of the container.

He took his bowl and found cooked instant noodles inside. He couldn’t help but swallow hard.

Before, instant noodles were junk food, but now they were like a gourmet feast!

Back on his own small boat, Qin Haonan eagerly grabbed his chopsticks and started to eat!

"Huh, there’s even a piece of meat!"

Overjoyed, Qin Haonan picked up the piece of meat, took a small bite, and chewed with a look of pure bliss on his face.

"So good!"

’I was starving all the time before, but after following the Boss, there’s hot porridge, fish soup, instant noodles, and big chunks of meat!’

’Most importantly, I get three meals a day, and I can eat my fill every time!’

’Damn those sons of bitches from Lvzhi Country,’ Qin Haonan cursed inwardly. ’If you dare to come, I’ll make sure it’s a one-way trip!’

’This wasn’t just about national hatred and personal grudges—it concerned his very livelihood!’

’He absolutely couldn’t let the crew from the Feixiang take that away from him!’

After quickly finishing his instant noodles, Qin Haonan hid the remaining piece of meat close to his body and went out again.

"Boss, I’m full. Let me take over!" Qin Haonan said, returning to the container roof.

Ren Yuanyang nodded slightly. "If the enemy is still searching at night, they’ll definitely have lighting equipment. So, you keep an eye out for any lights."

"Understood!" Qin Haonan nodded in response.

"You take watch for three hours. After that, Lu Jiamei will come to relieve you," Ren Yuanyang said before he left.

"That’s not necessary, I can do it all by myself!" Qin Haonan replied, puffing out his chest.

"No. This is an order!" Ren Yuanyang shook his head. "If the enemy really does come after us, we’ll have a fight on our hands. We have to stay in top condition!"

Qin Haonan was taken aback for a moment but didn’t insist further. "Yes, Boss!"

After returning to the container, Ren Yuanyang continued to expend his Mental Energy. This time, however, he didn’t dare to exhaust it completely.

’If the enemy came while he was drained, it would be dangerous!’

After expending some Mental Energy, Ren Yuanyang lay down to rest. He also needed to conserve his strength and prepare for the potential battle to come.

Lu Jiamei checked the pull-cords for the Spray Melons one more time, then immediately went to rest.

「Three hours later.」

Xin Wan woke her up.

Lu Jiamei went to the container roof and said in a low voice, "You go back and rest. I’ll take over!"

Qin Haonan pointed to the side. "There are a lot of planks here. I built a temporary resting spot. I’ll just rest here!"

Lu Jiamei looked closely and finally noticed a low-slung shelter on the container roof, just big enough for one person to crawl into and lie down.

She nodded slightly. "That works."

Qin Haonan gave her an okay sign and crawled right in.

’Before joining Ren Yuanyang, he used to just rig up his raincoat and curl up underneath it to rest. This makeshift shelter was cramped, but it was far better than what he was used to.’

Time slowly crept toward the early hours of the morning when, suddenly, a faint, flickering light appeared in the distance.

Lu Jiamei, who had been feeling a bit bored, instantly tensed up.

"Jiamei, I think I hear an engine!" Xin Wan’s voice came from the speedboat.

"Yeah, I see lights over here, too!" Lu Jiamei replied in a low voice, then immediately knocked on the nearby shelter.

Qin Haonan woke instantly, rolling out of the shelter!

"Sister Mei, what’s the situation?"

Lu Jiamei pointed in the direction of the lights. "You keep an eye on them. I’m going to wake the Boss!"

"Right!"
