Chapter 938 - 281: Giant Elephant (Part 3)
"Is it connected to that giant hand?" Su Changxing was uncertain. After using that extra Ability, his Perception—which had never been strong to begin with—fell into complete numbness.
He reminded himself again in the depths of his heart that this kind of extra Ability must not be used lightly, must not be used lightly...
The Big Horn came over and began eating the dead Extraordinary’s corpse bit by bit. The wounds on its body rapidly healed, and its aura noticeably strengthened by a fraction.
During this process, Su Changxing also completely digested that Tier Eight Extraordinary from before.
They lingered in the safe zone for a while, then headed toward the area they’d been in previously, intending to hunt another Tier Eight Extraordinary to advance. The street was riddled with holes of all sizes, caused by the purple-red tentacles that had jutted up from underground earlier.
"Let’s go over and take a look." Su Chang turned his head and said to the Big Horn, who seemed unusually wary, gradually approaching the hole ahead. A lot of rubble was scattered around it, mixed in with patches of violet liquid.
The Big Horn let out two roars toward the opening, issuing a warning, as if sensing immense danger.
Su Chang stretched his head out and looked down from the edge of the pit, seeing flowing water reflecting the color of the sky—and a colossal vertical eye.
He couldn’t be sure how deep the hole actually was—maybe more than ten meters, maybe more than twenty—but he could clearly see that vertical eye in the water’s flow, bloodshot, with some small black insects constantly crawling around the eye socket.
He felt a suffocating pressure rising from his body’s instincts.
This was at least a Tier Six Extraordinary Creature, something that should have been rampaging unhindered here, yet was bound beneath the ground.
"Let’s go. Who knows when that thing might suddenly burst out from underground."
Su Chang turned to the Big Horn and spoke. Tier Six creatures were far too powerful for him as he was now; even if the thing just stood there and let him attack, he might not be able to kill it.
Skirting around the holes of all sizes in the street, they crossed the stretch of ground they had traversed before. Ahead lay a vast, intact ruin—an enormous plain formed of wreckage, parts of which had turned to sand, mounds of it piled high.
"What’s that?"
Su Chang saw a refined, complex mechanical construct standing atop the highest point of the ruins. Six thick metal legs were planted firmly, its silhouette like a giant elephant— a six-legged Mechanical Giant Elephant.
He was certain it was some kind of man-made object. Yet in this world, where even firearms couldn’t be used, could they really build such a large, drivable mechanical construct?
Right after that—
Quite a few New humans, their entire bodies wrapped in white cloth, appeared near the Mechanical Giant Elephant. They climbed in through an opening like a door. One of them stood on top of the elephant’s head, waving the wooden staff in his hand and chanting something. Golden light descended out of thin air from the sky, falling onto the elephant’s body. The silver-white metal emitted a faint golden glow, and then a deafening rumble rolled out—the massive mechanical construct began to move.
Because of the tremendous noise, the scattered Zombies all around surged toward that direction. The cannons mounted on the mechanical colossus fired lasers that swept away the Zombies rushing up. Not a single Zombie could break past the fifty-meter perimeter; they all fell among the ruins, their bodies blasted into pieces by the Laser Cannons. Even an Extraordinary Zombie, moving at high speed, was taken out in a single shot.
Su Chang was certain those were Laser Cannons—the same type used by the Mechanical Legion of 17. The operating principles might be different, but the effect they produced was almost identical.
Returning to this place again, nothing here shook him as much as that Mechanical Giant Elephant.
That was the symbol of civilization!
If that thing had been designed and built by the New humans themselves, then they had likely already formed a new civilization, different from the one before the apocalypse.
"Just how much time has passed? Why haven’t the buildings here rotted away yet..."
Su Chang could now be sure that, since the last time he came here, an unknown number of years must have passed in this world. At least a century would be needed to form a new civilization—a civilization capable of building a Mechanical Giant Elephant.
