Chapter 812 - 168: The Road Is Broken
"You’re really okay, right?" Ning Mei frowned, staring at Yi Xiaotian, who was grinning from ear to ear.
"Of course I’m fine."
"Well, I can’t say I’m completely fine, but I’m doing great right now. I’ve gotten stronger, and you’re only one step away from breaking through to Tier Eight."
"Mr. Su didn’t lie to me. His strength is probably unfathomable, definitely not as simple as the Tier Seven you all guessed before."
Yi Xiaotian spoke with obvious excitement. His cheeks were slightly chubby, yet he still gave off a handsome and cute impression.
Seeing that Yi Xiaotian really was fine, Ning Mei’s expression relaxed a bit as she said:
"Of course he’s not just some ordinary person. Just now, those Undead outside were rioting, about to gather and attack our settlement. There was even an extremely powerful existence that came, but it was talked down by just a few words from Mr. Su."
"Even so, I still think you should stay away from that Mr. Su. He’s very dangerous. Any connection between you and him will only make you even more dangerous. People like us, if we want to stay alive, have to keep a low profile."
Yi Xiaotian didn’t agree with her words and argued back, "Sister Mei, that’s not right. If I want to become stronger, I can’t be afraid of danger."
"I’m not afraid of dying, never have been, and you know that."
"Besides, I think Mr. Su is a really good person. If he really wants to help me, then he doesn’t have any ulterior motives."
The two of them weren’t related by blood at all, but they were closer than real siblings.
Ning Mei sighed. "You’re always so quick to trust other people. Have you forgotten what happened with Wang Chen? If the captain hadn’t been nearby back then, you probably would’ve died there."
At this point, Yi Xiaotian’s expression also grew Heavy. "I just never thought he’d actually make a move on me for that thing."
"And Mr. Su saved us yesterday, and today he saved the entire settlement. Without him, we’d probably all be dead in the hands of those monsters."
Ning Mei let out a breath, nodded, and said, "You’re right. In a bit I’ll go with you to thank Mr. Su properly."
Yi Xiaotian’s face broke into a smile. "That’d be the best."
...
Knock, knock, knock.
There came a knocking from outside the door, the sound very light.
If one didn’t listen carefully, they might not even hear it.
In the dimness, Su Changxing slowly opened his eyes. His left eye was full of bloodshot veins. Using his eye as a medium, he had radiated a massive amount of Faith. His body couldn’t completely withstand it, so it had suffered a certain amount of damage.
This kind of injury was a minor matter though; for him, it would only take half a day to recover. It was just that the Spirit consumption was a bit high.
"Master, they’ve brought the food. It’s right outside."
Hua san’s voice came from outside.
She was just standing quietly there, waiting, like a wooden puppet, as if she were spacing out, yet also as if she were thinking.
When she had no goal, most of her time was spent like this—spacing out while thinking, thinking while spacing out.
It might be something completely meaningless, but she couldn’t find anything more meaningful to do.
Compared to before, at least she had things to do now. That could probably count as a kind of meaning.
Su Changxing withdrew his Perception of the surrounding world and sat up from the bed.
In this world, there were no restrictions on Perception. His Perception was like a wild horse off its reins, wantonly spreading across the settlement and the nearby area, extending out to a very far distance, to the point where he could faintly see that pitch-black passage formed by the interweaving of the two worlds within the black fog.
It was from there that he had walked out.
Strength and weakness only existed in comparison. Only now did he truly realize just how much stronger he’d become compared to when he left.
More than ten times stronger.
Right now he wasn’t even an Extraordinary of Tier Five, but under the blessing of Faith and that vast amount of Mysteriousness, his Power had long since stepped onto another dimension.
He might not be on par with that Dark Night Monarch, but he probably wasn’t far off. At the very least, they were on the same level, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to deceive the other party.
Under absolute suppression in strength, any tricks are useless.
His Mysteriousness was now around two million three hundred thousand, yet it was still not enough for him to advance to Tier Five.
It was as if there was a gaping chasm like a black hole in-between, so vast that even more than two million Mysteriousness wasn’t enough to fill it.
Still, he didn’t see it as a big problem. If two million wasn’t enough, then three million. Once quantity reached a certain level, it would inevitably cause a qualitative change.
So it was probably just a matter of time. As long as he had enough time, he would be able to advance to Tier Five sooner or later.
For him, this would eventually be a matter of course. It wasn’t a bottleneck; it was just that he needed a certain accumulation in quantity.
After carefully analyzing the reasons, he roughly concluded that those heretic Powers had caused his advancement path to veer more and more off track, veering into some corner where there was no longer any road ahead.
No road ahead meant that within the entire Extraordinary profession system, there was no position in Tier Five that corresponded to him.
The path had been cut off.
This kind of situation was simply inconceivable.
The Extraordinary themselves fit the Laws of the world, and in a sense could be considered one of the great paths of this era.
Everything can become Extraordinary; the Extraordinary encompasses all things.
Yet there was no road ahead of him. It was like a nearly perfect system where a tiny bug appeared, and he just happened to walk right onto that bug.
If he wanted to keep moving forward, he would have to open up the path himself, build the bridge himself.
This would undoubtedly require enormous Power and would consume an enormous amount of Power as well, equivalent to adding new Laws at a loophole in the world’s rules.
If he managed to reach Tier Five, then this path would have a Tier Five, and others who wanted to reach his level wouldn’t have to struggle as hard.
This would be a case of the predecessors planting trees so the later generations could enjoy the shade.
However, it was almost impossible for others to walk his path. To obtain heretic Power, one had to use the Heretic Matrix.
And this thing was created by the Discount Shop using heretic Power, then forming corresponding positions.
To this day, Su Changxing still couldn’t figure out what exactly the Discount Shop was.
It kept providing him with conveniences in all sorts of ways. Without the existence of the Discount Shop, he might have died somewhere in the Zombie World long ago, and there would have been no story after that.
Theoretically speaking, he probably still had one shortcut left—to obtain more Heretic Matrix to fill in that black hole in his position.
Heretics themselves were things that existed outside the Laws of the world, rejected by all worlds, living in the gaps between worlds, an Immortal yet decaying existence.
Many people might know about their existence, but had never seen them, because most people lived within the rules, and thus could not see things outside the rules.
The Discount Shop was probably also something outside the rules, but it and the heretics likely existed at different levels, one above and one below.
The Discount Shop was the nemesis of heretics.
