Chapter 342: Underground Civilization
Iron-Scale stood inside the inner sanctum of the golden palace. He unrolled a physical parchment across the stone war table and aligned the edges with the holographic projection glowing from the cartographic engine.
The Vanguard forces currently occupied the surface of the Third Continent and maintained a secure perimeter around the allied desert cities. Supplying an army of hundreds of thousands required massive logistical support.
Iron-Scale traced a claw over the glowing red grid projected from the cartographic engine. The holographic map detailed the surface outposts they recently purged across the Third Continent. He tapped a blank region resting miles beneath the eastern dunes. The subterranean void spanned the entire lower crust.
"The surface is secure." Iron-Scale rolled up a physical parchment mapping their supply lines. "We lack intel on the deep strata. Ignisar and Nyxara claimed the lower caverns remained completely uncharted."
Syra stepped out of the corner shadows to inspect the dark void on the holographic projection. "Uncharted territory hides resources. We require endless materials to sustain the march."
"Gather a small excavation team," Iron-Scale instructed. "We will breach the bedrock and map the caverns. Keep your weapons sheathed unless attacked."
The excavation team utilized enchanted tools to crack the dense sandstone foundation. Hours of digging eventually exposed a massive hollow cavity beneath the desert. The stone ceiling crumbled inward. Iron-Scale and Syra dropped through the breach and landed on a floor of polished obsidian.
Pale blue bioluminescence illuminated a sprawling underground settlement. Carved sandstone blockhouses lined a central avenue. Dozens of pale-skinned dwellers gathered around the fallen debris. The locals clutched long spears tipped with sharpened bone.
Iron-Scale raised a hand to signal the diggers to halt their advance. He kept his hands entirely visible and stepped away from his weapons. Syra mirrored his movements and stepped into the blue light to present an open posture.
A man covered in painted symbols stepped forward to lead the group of dwellers. He tilted his head and unleashed a rapid string of clicking syllables. The dialect lacked any recognizable phonetic structure.
Syra glanced at Iron-Scale. She tapped her ear and shook her head.
The man pointed his bone spear toward a crumbling statue dominating the center of the subterranean plaza. The monument depicted a towering entity holding a cracked stone sun. Time and neglect had eroded the architecture completely. Zero divine energy radiated from the shrine. The god they worshipped expired centuries ago.
Iron-Scale tapped his chest plate. Pointing back up the tunnel leading to the surface, he established a basic line of communication. He gestured to the dwellers and offered an open hand of greeting.
The local leader responded with another flurry of harsh clicks. He swung his arms wildly toward the ruined statue while his soldiers gripped their weapons tighter. Their knuckles turned white against the bone shafts.
"We need a translator." Iron-Scale kept his voice perfectly level to avoid startling the locals. "Or we need a psychic link to establish a dialogue."
Syra backed away from the spear tips with fluid grace to maintain the fragile peace.
Iron-Scale lowered his sword and tapped his chest plate. He closed his eyes to project his thoughts directly up the neural tether.
"Sovereign. We found a subterranean settlement. The locals speak an unrecognizable dialect. I require a translation artifact to establish a dialogue."
Rubedo sat on his obsidian throne in the Void and listened to the request. He swiped his hand across the glowing crystal console to open the System Shop. The language barrier presented a minor logistical obstacle for the invasion force. He typed a quick query into the search bar and found a localized linguistic cipher. He tapped the purchase icon and bypassed the price tag completely.
A beam of violet magic shot down from the orbital sanctuary. The light struck Iron-Scale directly in the forehead.
The harsh clicking syllables spilling from the local leader instantly morphed into clear words. The translation matrix nested itself perfectly into Iron-Scale’s cognitive pathways.
"You carry weapons forged from dark ore," the painted man challenged. He gripped his bone spear with white knuckles. "You trespass in the sunken shrine. State your purpose."
Iron-Scale kept his hands visible and took a single step forward. "We march across the surface. We seek resources and allies to expand our empire. Who do you worship in this cavern?"
The local leader lowered his spear slightly. He gestured toward the crumbling statue dominating the center of the plaza.
"He was the Architect of the Lost Land," the man answered. "Our ancestors fled the surface wars centuries ago and sought refuge in his shadow. We prayed for salvation."
Syra inspected the eroded architecture. "He left you to rot."
The leader pointed his spear at the ground. "He expired. The stone cracked. The divine energy faded from the shrine. We remain here to guard his final monument."
Iron-Scale studied the eroded features of the towering entity holding the cracked sun. "What is the name of your dead god?"
"Gorgoth."
Up in the sanctuary, Rubedo leaned forward and gripped the armrests of his throne. The name echoed through the communication tether and struck a very specific memory. He recalled the colossal titan composed of cracked sandstone and drying clay drifting in the endless dark.
Gorgoth was the original Steward of the Seventeenth Continent. The ancient deity failed his millennium mandate to cultivate civilization. Right before the System deleted the old god for his failure, Gorgoth ripped the glowing Phylum out of his own chest and forced Rubedo to consume the core. That singular act granted Rubedo absolute dominion over the Seventeenth Continent.
Rubedo stared at the live feed of the subterranean cavern on his primary monitor.
Gorgoth ruled the Seventeenth Continent entirely. A secret cult dedicated to his worship survived miles beneath the crust of the Third Continent. The geographical discrepancy made absolutely zero sense.
Syra dug her claws into the crumbling sandstone monument and hauled herself onto the deity’s massive hands. She traced a hidden seam along the cracked stone sun and pushed the concealed compartment open.
A slab of dark stone covered in chaotic runes rested inside the cavity. The artifact actively absorbed the pale blue bioluminescence reflecting across the cavern.
The dwellers dropped to the obsidian floor and clutched their skulls, screaming and thrashing against the ground. Iron-Scale pulled a star-iron case from his belt and vaulted up the crumbling statue to reach the sun.
He snatched the dark stone from Syra’s grip and slammed the lid shut to seal the artifact away.
The cavern walls groaned and shifted violently. Massive sections of the sandstone blockhouses crumbled outward to reveal hidden alcoves carved deep into the bedrock. Towering constructs forged from petrified wood and bone tore themselves free from the foundation.
The guardians raised rusted blades and charged blindly toward the retreating dwellers.
Syra melted into the shadows of the falling debris and flanked the nearest construct. She manifested a condensed blade of darkness to sever the guardian’s petrified spine.
Iron-Scale channeled his emerald core and stepped into the path of another advancing enemy. He swung his star-iron blade through its chest cavity, letting the elemental wind tear the construct into a shower of splinters.
The last construct collapsed into a pile of ruined masonry. The local leader pushed himself off the floor and pointed his bone spear directly at Iron-Scale’s chest. He stared wildly at the commander, his eyes tracking an invisible tether stretching upward into the ceiling.
The translation matrix fed the man’s frantic clicks into clear words.
"You carry his blood." The leader squeezed his spear shaft until the wood groaned. "The cosmic fire of Gorgoth bleeds from your spirit. You slaughtered the Architect of the Lost Land and stole his power."
The surviving dwellers raised their bone spears and formed a tight circle around Syra and Iron-Scale. They stepped closer and brought their weapons forward to strike down the supposed murderers.
Violet light erupted from the ceiling and washed over the subterranean plaza. Rubedo projected his avatar directly into the cavern, manifesting a towering silhouette of burning mana over the ruined statue.
He raised a spectral hand and summoned a flawless illusion of the Phylum. The core of swirling magma and starlight hovered brightly above the plaza.
The illusion of the Phylum flared brighter to cast long shadows across the prostrate crowd. Rubedo looked down at the kneeling settlement from his orbital sanctuary. He focused his intent through the terminal and projected his voice directly into the cavern.
"I am Rubedo." The words vibrated the loose gravel across the floor. "I claim the mantle of the Architect. You belong to the Red Spiral now."
The man kept his forehead pressed against the obsidian. "We hear the Steward. The bloodline continues."
Iron-Scale walked forward and planted his boot next to the man’s trembling hand. He looked up at the towering violet projection.
"Sovereign," Iron-Scale called out. "We have an underground population and a sealed vault. What are your orders for them?"
"Bring them into the fold," Rubedo commanded. "Extract the harvest."
The violet avatar dissolved into floating sparks of light. The cavern remained illuminated only by the pale blue mushrooms. The dwellers raised their heads to stare at the empty space where Rubedo had manifested.
The man stood up and wiped the dirt from his painted cheeks. He turned to face Iron-Scale and bowed deeply.
"The Architect chose a successor." Tears streamed down the leader’s painted face as he gazed up at the starlight core. "We pledge our blood to the new Steward. We guard an ancient vault beneath this plaza, filled with the Architect’s final harvest. It belongs entirely to you."
