Chapter 226 - 138: Last Mercy
The Skeleton Undead obeyed the command, immediately turning around and dragging Benjamin back.
This back-and-forth ordeal made Benjamin break out in a cold sweat. He was no longer wondering if he was some kind of protagonist; all he wanted was to live.
"Tell me what you know. If you say something that interests me, I’ll let you go," Li Ziyu said leisurely, leaning back in his White Bone Throne.
"Race restrictions! I know about race restrictions!" Benjamin shouted without a moment’s hesitation.
Li Ziyu paused, taken aback, and looked over at Zhang Peng. Zhang Peng thought for a moment, then shook his head. He had never heard of race restrictions.
’If even Zhang Peng doesn’t know, this information must be valuable.’ Li Ziyu’s interest was piqued. He said to Benjamin, "Go on."
"If I tell you, will you really let me go?" Benjamin asked, his eyes darting around at the surrounding Undead as he swallowed nervously.
"You’re not in a position to be making deals," Li Ziyu said, his expression turning cold.
"I hope you’ll honor your promise," Benjamin said, gritting his teeth. ’I have no other choice. My life is in his hands. If I make him happy, he might spare me. But if I piss him off, I’m definitely going to die.’
This information about race restrictions was something Benjamin had picked up from others. It was just a rumor, and he had no idea how accurate it was. No one had ever mentioned it on the forums or in the chat groups.
As everyone knew, when Transmigrators arrived in this Otherworld, they would randomly receive a fortress and a corresponding Race. Some Races were weak, while others, like Demons, Angels, and Giant Beasts, were inherently powerful.
This was obviously unfair. A Transmigrator with a powerful Race could develop rapidly in a short amount of time, leaving little room for weaker Races to survive. This was what the vast majority of Transmigrators believed.
However, the reality was different. Races like Demons and Angels were indeed powerful, but their development speed wasn’t beyond comprehension. They belonged to the top tier, but they didn’t dominate it. Races like Vampires and Werewolves, who allied with the Natives, could fight them on relatively equal footing.
This was very strange. Logically speaking, powerful Races should develop faster and possess considerable combat power in the early stages. Setting aside environmental factors, it should have been easy for them to surpass their peers. So why weren’t they as far ahead as one might expect?
While chatting with someone, Benjamin heard them propose a theory: race restrictions.
The more powerful a Race, the more shackles it would bear as a result of its strength. It was precisely because of these shackles that the powerful Races were unable to develop at the fastest possible rate.
That expert even gave Benjamin examples from his own research. For instance, the Angel Race possessed powerful physiques, extraordinary regenerative abilities, and overwhelming Holy Light. But, interestingly, they almost never killed Humans or other relatively good-aligned Races—not a single one.
According to his research, if an Angel were to kill a Human indiscriminately, the Angel would be wounded. Strangely, this wound would not heal; it was completely unaffected by their potent regenerative abilities, which was utterly absurd.
This led the expert to a conclusion: the Angel Race could not harm "good" Races. They could only take action against those deemed "evil," otherwise they themselves would suffer incurable harm.
The data on Demons and Giant Beasts also seemed to prove the existence of race restrictions. For example, the restriction on Demons was their inherent need to create chaos. Any attempt to maintain peace would incite them to rebellion. Moreover, no matter the branch of the Demon Race, their loyalty was always extremely low. It was impossible for them to reach a state of true loyalty like other Races; it was difficult to even gain their trust.
In other words, even with the System in place, Demons could still betray their master at any moment.
As for Giant Beasts, their restriction was simple: these creatures had enormous appetites that only grew as they matured. The moment they went hungry, they would turn hostile. The Giant Beast City Lord was so overwhelmed trying to procure food for these massive creatures that he had no time or energy to focus on development.
Vampires and Werewolves had their own weaknesses. In sunlight, Low-Level Vampires could not survive, while High-Level Vampires would be suppressed and lose their regenerative abilities.
Werewolves had it even worse. They were only at their strongest on the night of a full moon; otherwise, their combat effectiveness was reduced to 50-80% of their full power.
The expert had summarized his findings on several Races, all of which had special restrictions. The more powerful the Race, the stronger the restriction. Conversely, seemingly weaker Races had fewer limitations. Races like Goblins, Ratmen, Jackal Wolfmen, and Kobolds had almost no restrictions and could be commanded freely.
After listening to Benjamin, Li Ziyu scratched his cheek. ’It all sounds quite reasonable,’ he thought, ’but is this information reliable?’
’If it is true, then what is the race restriction for my Undead?’
’The sun?’
’But during the day, they’re only weakened and their combat power drops. The restriction isn’t nearly as severe as the one on Vampires. Are my Undead weaker than Vampires? I refuse to accept that!’
Li Ziyu began to carefully review the characteristics of the Undead, trying to pinpoint his Race’s restriction. He had never thought about it before, but now that he was, he suddenly noticed many things that didn’t quite add up.
Weakened combat effectiveness under the sun—that was one restriction. But it could be circumvented with special methods, like the Aura from the Soul Coffin.
Then there was another, very important one: High-Tier Soldier Types. ’That,’ he realized, ’must be the true race restriction!’
