Chapter 224 - 137: Catching a Live One

’Just as I thought. During the battle, the Undead didn’t detect any life signatures in the main building, so they never went inside!

The fact that the Undead didn’t detect any life signatures means there was no one inside during the battle. It was an empty building. That guy Benjamin fled early!

It’s a good thing I came to check myself. Otherwise, by the time the battlefield was cleaned up, there’d be no telling where Benjamin had run off to.

Although the system had indicated that a City Lord and their fortress were bound, no one could be certain if the City Lord would actually die if the main building was destroyed. Li Ziyu, however, had already confirmed that a City Lord would revive in their main building after death.

When it came to his enemies, Li Ziyu was always cautious. He much preferred to confirm their deaths rather than rely on guesswork.

More than three hours had passed since the battle began. Benjamin was long gone. ’But do you really think you can escape?’

Li Ziyu’s brow smoothed, and the corners of his mouth curled into a disdainful smile.

’If this were daytime, it would be genuinely difficult to find you now that you’ve fled. But it’s nighttime. My Wandering Souls are out, and they can hunt you down without restraint.

The Wandering Souls would have no problem dealing with Transmigrators who had little combat ability. With this in mind, Li Ziyu prepared to summon them.

Just then, Mei Ji suddenly floated over. She curtsied and said in a sweet, enchanting voice, "Master, we’ve found the fleeing Humans."

’Oh? What a sudden surprise.

Li Ziyu raised an eyebrow and nodded. "Bring them back."

Mei Ji curtsied again. "Yes, Master."

As it turned out, Benjamin and Percy were just unlucky. Realizing the situation was dire, Benjamin had taken advantage of the chaos to escape into the Wasteland with Percy. Unfortunately for them, they happened to run into Wandering Souls who were heading back to their Soul Coffins.

At first, the Wandering Souls didn’t realize what was happening. They just spotted two Humans frantically fleeing on the ground below and followed them out of curiosity. Later, they received a telepathic message informing them of the battle, and they immediately understood: the two Humans must have escaped from the battlefield.

After all, the Undead Fortress was ninety percent Undead. There were only three Humans on their side: City Lord Li Ziyu, City Lord Zhang Peng, and City Lord Liu Xingxing. Therefore, the two Humans below were clearly not allies.

So, since they had fled the battlefield and weren’t allies, they had to be enemies.

The Wandering Souls tailed them for a while before sending one of their own back to report the news. This was a chance to earn great merit.

Benjamin and Percy had been running for over three hours straight. They were so exhausted they could barely breathe, but they didn’t dare stop. They gritted their teeth and forced themselves onward. Such is the human will to survive.

"Benjamin, I can’t run anymore." Percy heaved, each breath a desperate gasp. His lungs felt like they were on fire, and his vision swam.

"No, we can’t stop. *Huff, huff...* We haven’t gone far enough. They’ll catch us!" Benjamin glanced over his shoulder. He couldn’t see any sign of pursuers on the empty Wasteland.

"No... they won’t. They didn’t chase us last time, either." As he spoke, Percy suddenly staggered and pitched forward, landing hard on the ground and splitting his lip.

Seeing this, Benjamin turned to pull him up, but his own strength was gone. He not only failed to lift Percy, but he also stumbled and fell to the ground beside him. After taking a few ragged breaths, he simply sat up where he’d fallen. He didn’t have the strength to run anymore, either.

Gasping for air, Benjamin snapped irritably, "The only reason they didn’t chase us last time was because the sun was out. Take a look. Do you see a sun in the sky now?"

Percy spat the dirt from his mouth, then rolled onto his back with a groan, facing the night sky. He took a huge gulp of air. "I don’t care if there’s no sun, I’m not running anymore. To survive the Undead only to die of exhaustion... My God, what a miserable way to go."

They lay in silence for a long moment. Percy gazed up at the night sky and noticed several streaks of green light circling overhead. He couldn’t help but marvel inwardly, ’The stars in the Otherworld are so peculiar.’ He then muttered, "Can we really escape? Our fortress is gone."

Hearing this, Benjamin picked up a small pebble and tossed it at him. "We’ll definitely survive," he said, his voice full of encouragement. "And we’ll live better than ever! We’ll get our wealth back, we’ll gain power, and we’ll have women. Don’t you like the women in this Otherworld?"

The mention of women finally seemed to lift Percy’s Spirit. He started laughing, which turned into a fit of coughing. "*Cough, cough*... You’re right. There are women in the Otherworld. Beautiful women. We’ll survive. We have to survive, if only for them! Benjamin, look at those stars... they’re green. How beautiful. They’re like a woman’s Gemstone eyes."

"Where? Let me see." Benjamin looked up, and after just one glance, the color drained from his face.

’The color of those ’stars’... wasn’t it the exact same color as those green Energy Bullets that had rained down from the sky?!

He swallowed hard and asked nervously, "Percy, how long ago did you notice those stars?"

Percy turned to look at Benjamin. Seeing how tense he was, he suddenly laughed. "What’s wrong? You look awfully nervous. Did our pursuers finally arrive?"

"How can you still be in the mood to joke?!" Benjamin yelled, his face grim. "I’m asking you, how long have you been seeing those stars?!"

Only then did Percy realize something was wrong. He stammered, "Just... just when I fell down. That’s when I noticed them."

’I hope this isn’t what I think it is.’

Benjamin struggled to his feet and staggered over to Percy, trying to pull him up.

Percy remained on the ground, showing no intention of getting up. "No," he whined, "Just let me rest a little longer."
