Chapter 251 - 146: Take Out the Undead (2)
"Undead! We’ve found Undead, Lord City Lord! The tunnels are swarming with them!" a squad leader, his Armor caked in blood, cried out frantically. Unlike Sachelli, he hadn’t fled on sight; instead, he had led his squad members into the fray.
They had taken down a good number of Undead, but his squad was all but wiped out under the Undead’s assault. The blood on him was from when he’d fought his way out.
’Undead again. Why does everyone keep talking about Undead? Do they think I’m that easy to fool?’
White Hair Pulan frowned, his sharp gaze fixed on the squad leaders before him, sweeping over the bloodstains on their Armor.
The bloodstains were real. They weren’t smeared on; they were from injuries sustained in a fight with something.
The first few squad leaders had been completely unscathed, so White Hair Pulan hadn’t believed a word they said, feeling they were just shirking responsibility. But now these men were here, also talking about Undead. This gave him pause—after all, these ones were wounded.
"You said there are large numbers of Undead in the tunnels. How many, exactly?" White Hair Pulan felt he had to take this seriously. If there really were Undead, it would be a huge problem. After all, the Undead were a legendary Race, reputed to be powerful and terrifying.
He, White Hair Pulan, a City Lord with a bright future, would absolutely not die in obscurity in some border city. Komeilan City was definitely not his final destination.
"There are traces of Undead in every tunnel. We estimate their numbers are in the tens of thousands, maybe even more," the City Defense Army squad leader said with a grave expression.
"Hahaha, don’t be ridiculous. Do you really think the entire Undead Race’s army is invading?" White Hair Pulan burst out laughing, not believing the squad leader’s words.
But his laughter quickly died. The squad leaders before him were all staring at him with grave expressions, remaining silent.
"Could it be true? Do you really think the Undead Army is invading?" White Hair Pulan said in disbelief, feeling like fate was playing a huge joke on him.
For so many years, the Undead had only existed in legends, as figures in children’s bedtime stories. Who would have thought they would appear during his tenure as City Lord? ’Isn’t this just making trouble for me!’
The squad leaders still said nothing. Each of their squads hadn’t encountered a dozen or two Undead, but hundreds, even thousands. If every tunnel had that many Undead, what was wrong with saying an Undead Army was invading?
White Hair Pulan understood what they meant. He took a deep breath and strode to his desk. Spread across it was a map on Beast Hide Paper—a map of the Underworld, dotted with all its tunnels and cities.
"Summon all City Defense Army officers for a meeting. We have an enemy," White Hair Pulan said, his eyes still on the map, his mind already racing to figure out how he could profit from the Undead.
That’s right. He was mulling over how to profit from the Undead.
An enemy wasn’t frightening; what was frightening was an enemy that offered no profit. As long as there was something to be gained, an enemy could become an excellent partner. This was precisely White Hair Pulan’s way of thinking.
Soon, the officers of the City Guard had assembled in the City Lord’s Mansion. They had already heard about the Undead. Each of them wore a grim expression, but their hearts were ablaze with excitement. ’The Undead... a legendary Race! We have to see them for ourselves this time, no matter what!’ The violent urges born from the Demonic Qi’s corruption were becoming almost uncontrollable.
Once everyone had arrived, White Hair Pulan finally looked up from the map, glanced at the City Defense Army officers, and walked to the front.
"According to the intel brought back by the City Defense Army squads, the Undead have invaded our world!"
"We cannot let those damned creatures do as they please! We must drive them from our world!"
Puffing out his chest and standing ramrod straight, White Hair Pulan delivered an impassioned speech to boost the City Defense Army’s morale. The effect was excellent. The officers’ eyes practically glowed as they let out savage howls. He was very pleased, feeling he had successfully roused them to action.
However, he forgot that Demonized Creatures are naturally battle-hungry. Even without his pep talk, these guys would have been figuring out how to pick a fight with the Undead.
"Though the Undead may be a legendary Race, we will not be afraid! We cannot allow them to invade our home!"
"Mighty Warriors, it is time to show them your muscle and your Power! Let the Undead know they cannot run rampant here!"
"Kill them all! Bring back their Soul Fire!"
White Hair Pulan clenched his fists and shouted, looking for all the world like a General about to march out with the City Guard. In reality, he had no such intention.
’How could a City Lord possibly put himself in harm’s way? Only by preserving my own life can I make Komeilan City a better place. This is for the people.’
He convinced himself easily, without the slightest hesitation.
As for why he was willing to send troops to crusade against the Undead, it certainly wasn’t to "protect the homeland and drive out the evil Undead." It was because of the Soul Fire.
White Hair Pulan recalled the legends. According to those legends, the Soul Fire of the Undead could make Demonized Creatures even stronger. This was the real reason he was willing to dispatch his troops. In his eyes, the Undead were a walking Gold Mine.
"Kill them all!"
All the City Guard officers raised their clenched fists, shouting in unison, their faces alight with excitement.
’A bunch of mindless battle junkies,’ White Hair Pulan scoffed inwardly. But on his face, he wore an excited expression as he waved a hand and declared, "March out!"
