Chapter 742: Underground Base
“Right here?”
Colt looked out the window at what appeared to be a completely ordinary neighborhood, showing no signs of anything special.
“Throughout the entire Old City District, only this area has no violent gangs. That’s highly abnormal.”
Lin Ye didn’t think it was because there were no violent gangs here, but rather that the gang here was strong enough to avoid being discovered.
At least, not by the living.
“But we don’t know how to enter the enemy’s base. There are bound to be their lookouts nearby. If we get too close, we could attract a lot of enemies.”
Colt didn’t believe their current lineup could go head-to-head with a violent organization like that.
“I know how to get in, and I can guess roughly where their lookouts are. As a detective, I can deduce a lot of information from a map.”
If he weren’t looking for the mission target, Lin Ye would have preferred to craft some explosives first, then collapse the enemy’s underground base, turning it into a tomb.
Lin Ye parked the car by the roadside and led the others deeper into the neighborhood.
This block had many small enemy outposts, including a four-story abandoned building that overlooked the entire area. Lin Ye and Colt quickly cleared that building. Anyone who poked their head out got their head blown off by his rifle.
They didn’t bother to suppress the gunfire. The enemy quickly discovered them.
But by then, Lin Ye had already taken control of the abandoned building and found a large-caliber sniper rifle beside a corpse.
Any enemies emerging from the smaller outposts had their heads blasted open by Lin Ye.
Colt handled clearing the other outposts from below, collecting weapons and equipment along the way.
“Is this really okay?”
Colt stacked the weapons gathered from the small outposts near the window, including a few more large-caliber sniper rifles.
Most of the surrounding lookouts had been cleared. The abandoned building offered an excellent field of view.
“I’m luring them out to us. This way, we not only eliminate a batch of enemies but also collect more weapons and gear.”
Standing by the fourth-floor window, Lin Ye analyzed the terrain. He could pinpoint potential underground base exits. As soon as the enemy sent people out, he could quickly take out their armed personnel.
Earlier, when Colt cleared the outposts, he’d also destroyed the nearby surveillance cameras. The enemy probably still didn’t know exactly what was happening outside.
Not long after, Lin Ye spotted armed personnel inside buildings that were likely base exits.
He sent the positions to Colt, who was at another window. They fired simultaneously, starting to eliminate those armed men.
The buildings in this area couldn’t block large-caliber sniper rounds. Lin Ye quickly shot through walls to kill the enemies he’d spotted earlier. The remaining ones couldn’t escape either; he knew where they’d hide.
Colt couldn’t shoot through walls like Lin Ye, but his aim was steady. Each shot took down an enemy.
“…Looks like most are dead.”
Colt scanned the area through his scope. There might be one or two stragglers outside, but the bulk of the enemies were cleared.
“Don’t rush. They probably still don’t know exactly what’s happening outside. They’ll send more people to check.”
Lin Ye didn’t think losing two armed squads would make the enemy back off. The fight was just beginning.
Just as Lin Ye predicted, soon four armed squads appeared inside buildings that were likely base exits.
He certainly didn’t hold back. He still had plenty of sniper rounds. The enemy numbers were still too few.
After losing one squad, the enemy finally pinpointed their location and started returning fire.
Lin Ye and Colt kept shifting positions. Colt used a light machine gun to suppress enemy fire while Lin Ye took down anyone daring to fight back.
Even if the enemy hid in building corners, Lin Ye would blow their heads off.
The pressure was unbearable for ordinary people. Some armed personnel began fleeing away from the building.
Just then, Lin Ye received a message. It was Ephesus’s phone. The sender was Susie. They were inside another building, gathering nearby intelligence for Lin Ye.
“Four vans are coming from outside. I’ll deal with them. Send me updates if anything happens here.”
Lin Ye picked up his sniper rifle and moved to another window. Though only four stories high, this building overlooked most of the area.
The vans were approaching. Lin Ye fired four shots, blowing the heads off four drivers.
The vans crashed on the road. Lin Ye switched to his rifle and killed all the enemies and radiation mutants crawling out of them.
Too bad he didn’t have special ammunition, or he could have just blown up the fuel tanks.
Gunfire erupted from Colt’s position. Lin Ye hurried back to his side and continued shooting the armed personnel.
After the third wave was wiped out, the area finally fell silent. Lin Ye began organizing their weapons and gear. Now they could go down.
“Are you really bringing them along? It’ll be dangerous down there.”
Colt looked at Lin Ye with some confusion.
“It’s even more dangerous up here. Better to stick together.”
Lin Ye led the way. The base entrance was where the armed men had emerged.
Soon, they found the underground base entrance inside a building filled with corpses.
Looking at the head-shot bodies, Wen Luo felt a sense of unreality.
Susie had given up struggling. She just wanted to find that black cat quickly and get Ephesus out of here.
Ephesus was the calmest of them all. She just wanted to find her family as soon as possible, completely ignoring her surroundings.
The base entrance was a stairway leading underground. Lin Ye took point, while Colt brought up the rear.
The spiral staircase descended twenty meters underground, connecting to a metal corridor.
The corridor was well-lit. Lin Ye drew his pistol and shot out the surveillance cameras on both sides.
“…Why is no one here?”
Colt asked nervously from behind.
“How should I know? Maybe they’re waiting for us inside.”
Lin Ye slowed his pace. With every step, he made sure he wouldn’t trigger a trap.
There were research facilities along both sides of the corridor, but no researchers inside. They’d probably gone to take shelter.
Lin Ye spotted some hazmat suits and an experimental area that required them to be worn.
“These despicable scumbags! They’re studying those monsters here!”
Colt growled in anger.
“They caught Little Black for experiments?”
Ephesus’s face turned pale. She’d already imagined the worst.
“Don’t jump to conclusions. Once I kill all the enemies here, I’ll take you to find the mission target.”
Lin Ye continued moving forward slowly. This was the enemy’s base. No amount of caution was excessive.
