Grash’s chest heaved heavily as he stared at Kong’gong, but there was no fear in his eyes. Bruises covered nearly every part of his body, and blood trickled from several shallow cuts, yet none of his injuries were serious enough to slow him down. His muscles still responded perfectly, his breathing remained steady enough, and his grip on his battle axe had not weakened.

It wasn’t his injuries that concerned him. It was Kong’gong.

The old kobold remained suspended upside down from the ceiling, his claws embedded firmly into the stone as though gravity had simply ceased to matter. His emerald eyes glowed in the darkness, following Grash with the focus of a predator watching prey. Every movement Grash made was being observed, and the realization unsettled him more than he wanted to admit.

How could someone who was supposedly blind suddenly see?

Grash wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth and raised his head.

"How?" he asked, his chest continuing to rise and fall heavily.

Kong’gong tilted his head slightly.

"How can I see?"

Even his voice had changed. It was deeper now, carrying a roughness that seemed to come from somewhere much older than the kobold Grash had spoken to earlier. A low chuckle escaped his throat before his emerald eyes narrowed.

"Hehehehe, how could you know about Magic Oaths when you rely on such a flawed form of magic?"

Grash’s expression immediately changed.

Magic Oaths.

The words struck a memory buried deep within his mind. One of the pages of the Red Scripture had been dedicated to something called a Magic Oath. The goblins had spent countless hours trying to decipher it, but the text was incomplete and several of the words could not be translated properly. They had never understood what those words actually meant.

Grash’s fingers tightened around his axe.

"What the hell is a Magic Oath?"

For the first time, Kong’gong’s expression became thoughtful. The salamander remained upside down, one hand rubbing his long white goatee while he considered whether explaining something so valuable to an enemy was worth the effort. Eventually, his lips curled into a faint smile.

"Since you are going to die anyway, I might as well tell you."

Kong’gong slowly released one of his claws from the ceiling and allowed his body to rotate before landing lightly on the ground. His tail struck the stone behind him with a dull thud, and the spikes at its end scraped against the floor as he straightened himself.

"A Magic Oath is something any true wielder of magic can make with Athedal. For me, I gave up my eyes and my identity for life, but in exchange, I can revert to my kobold form for one day in an entire year. In return, my capabilities in this form are tripled. More importantly, in this form, I can finally see."

A strange smile slowly spread across Kong’gong’s face. Green saliva leaked from the corner of his mouth and fell onto the ground.

Sssssss.

Steam immediately rose from the stone. The place where the droplet landed began corroding, the surface bubbling and darkening beneath the acidic fluid.

Grash stared at the spot for several seconds before slowly looking back at Kong’gong. A faint trace of horror had finally entered his expression.

The explanation sounded absurd.

Giving up his eyes, identity and sacrificing his normal form for an entire year just to gain a single day of overwhelming power.

No rational person would make such a bargain. Yet the evidence was standing directly in front of him.

The creature before him was stronger than anything Grash had expected. Worse, Kong’gong was not merely overpowering him with magic. He was matching him physically.

That was what truly disturbed Grash.

Physical strength was something he trusted. His entire life had been built around it. He had spent decades strengthening his body, sharpening his instincts and mastering his weapons until he could stand against enemies who possessed advantages he could never naturally obtain. His Mana Body had been created specifically to close the gap between goblins and magical beasts. And now a kobold had entered a transformation that completely overwhelmed him in that very field.

Doubt tried to creep into his mind.

For the first time, Grash wondered if he had underestimated this colony from the beginning.

Grash immediately crushed the thought. His runes had carried him through countless battles. His words of power had allowed him to defeat enemies far stronger than himself and his Mana Body had already survived Tud’or’s Elemental Body.

This battle would not be different.

"Only weaklings require such a shameful method to increase their strength!" Grash growled.

Kong’gong laughed.

The sound echoed through the tunnel, deep and unpleasant, before gradually fading into silence.

"Foolish goblin. Your blind confidence and rigidity are the reason all one hundred men of the Ashmork clan will die in another man’s land. That includes you."

Grash’s expression hardened.

"Big or small, a lizard is still a lizard. Come. I’ll cut you up and roast you for dinner."

The runes carved along his battle axe suddenly ignited. Azure light flooded across the blade as lightning erupted from the weapon, crawling along its edge and snapping through the surrounding air.

"Lightning Cutter!"

Kong’gong’s lips curled upward.

"I would like to see you try."

Swoosh!

Neither waited for the other.

Kong’gong lunged forward with frightening speed while Grash charged directly toward him, his lightning coated axe raised high. The distance between them disappeared almost instantly as the two monsters collided once again.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the battlefield, another fight had reached its conclusion.

Bang!

Brox jerked backward from the force of the collision with Ka’z.

This time, however, Ka’z had not moved, Brox had.

The massive goblin stared down at what remained of his iron mace. The weapon had shattered into dozens of fragments and his eyes widened.

Before he could even process what had happened, Ka’z’s second fist slammed directly into his stomach.

Bang!

Brox’s enormous belly caved inward beneath the blow. His body shot backward like a cannonball, tearing through the narrow battlefield before smashing into the ground. He bounced once, struck the stone again and rolled several meters before finally stopping.

Blegh!

A mixture of blood and half digested food exploded from his mouth.

Brox twisted onto his hands and knees and began vomiting violently, his stomach convulsing as he tried to drag himself forward. His fingers scraped against the ground, but his arms refused to support his weight.

"Brox!!!!!" Lucy screamed.

She immediately raised her bow and released three arrows.

Swoosh!

Ka’z ducked beneath them with a vile grin. The arrows passed harmlessly above his head as he continued forward without slowing.

Lucy quickly reached for another arrow.

Swoosh!

She fired again and Ka’z suddenly planted one foot against the wall. His claws dug into the stone, then he ran sideways along it on all fours.

Lucy stared in disbelief as the young kobold moved like an actual predator, his body leaning close to the wall as his limbs carried him rapidly past the fallen Brox and directly toward her.

"Stay back!"

Lucy hurriedly reached for another set of arrows.

She drew three at once and released them.

Ka’z jumped from the wall.

The arrows struck the place where he had been a moment earlier, embedding themselves into the stone as Ka’z landed lightly on his feet.

Lucy reached for another arrow but she was too late. Ka’z was already in front of her and his claws flashed.

Slash!

Lucy’s neck opened and her mouth fell open, but no scream came. Warm blood immediately flooded her throat and poured between her fingers as she desperately clutched the wound with both hands.

Her bow slipped from her grasp as she staggered backward, staring at Ka’z with wide eyes filled with pain and disbelief.

"C... Chi... Chief..."

She turned.

Despite the wound, she tried to walk toward Grash. On the fifth step, her legs finally gave out and Lucy collapsed onto the ground.

"LUYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!"

Brox’s roar shook the tunnel.

The massive goblin desperately tried to push himself upright, his arms trembling beneath him. Gritting his teeth, he forced himself to his feet. However, cold steel suddenly pierced through his back.

Pfft!

Another spear entered his side alongside several others.

Blegh!

Brox’s body jerked violently. Blood poured from his mouth as his vision began fading as he slowly turned his head.

Several goblins stood behind him, their spears buried deep into his body. Their expressions were grim as they held him in place, preventing him from moving.

Brox looked forward again.

Ka’z had already walked past Lucy’s corpse, dragging it along by the hair. The young kobold didn’t even look back. He simply continued walking deeper into the darkness of the tunnel, disappearing from Brox’s sight.

Brox’s breathing became weaker but his gaze remained fixed on the direction Ka’z had disappeared.

"Chief..." he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I will be leaving first."

His body finally gave out.

Brox collapsed onto the ground with a heavy thud, raising a small cloud of dust around his massive body.
