Chapter 824: That Was Close
He stared blankly at this young man talking to himself.
What does he mean?
Don’t tell me... he actually wants to go deal with Jiang Ran?
What happened next confirmed Manager Wu Meiling’s suspicion.
The young man opened his mouth and asked, “Manager, do you have a photo of that Jiang Ran? And which apartment in our Alice Apartment does he live in?”
Manager Wu Meiling’s left corner of her mouth lifted slightly. “I do. I’ll show you right now.”
Manager Wu Meiling picked up her phone and found a photo of Jiang Ran in her gallery.
As it turned out, Manager Wu Meiling’s phone actually had quite a few photos of Jiang Ran.
Some were front-facing shots, some were side profiles, and some were candid pictures.
The young man glanced at the photo and said, “Got it. So which apartment number?”
Manager Wu Meiling: “Building No. 1, Room 304.”
“Alright, thanks.”
After thanking Manager Wu Meiling, he shoved both hands in his pockets and casually strolled out of Building No. 2. Manager Wu Meiling quickly came out of the management office and secretly watched from behind to see where this young man went. Sure enough, he headed straight for Building No. 1.
The young man entered Building No. 1 with his hands in his pockets. Instead of taking the elevator, he chose the stairs and went up to the third floor, quickly arriving in front of Room 304.
Once there, the young man pulled out a Nepalese kukri knife from somewhere on his body.
He sheathed the leather scabbard back, revealing a razor-sharp blade that gleamed with cold light.
Finally, the young man held the knife in his left hand, concealed it behind his back, and pressed the doorbell of Room 304.
Inside Room 304, Jiang Ran.
After coming home, Jiang Ran had lain down on his bedroom bed to rest and sleep, not waking up until around 7 PM, his stomach growling with hunger.
He didn’t order takeout. Instead, he rummaged through the house to see what there was to eat.
He found a pack of braised beef noodles, half a bag of ham sausages, and three marinated eggs.
Perfect. That would be his dinner for the night.
Jiang Ran was even generous with himself, dumping the entire half bag of ham sausages and all three marinated eggs into the noodles.
Once the noodles were cooked, he brought them to the coffee table in the living room, sat down, and found a movie commentary on TikTok.
He watched while he ate.
He’d only taken about five bites when the doorbell rang.
Jiang Ran put down his chopsticks and quickly walked to the door.
He asked who it was.
A man’s voice came from outside the door:
“I’m sent up by Manager Wu Meiling. There’s something I need to inform you about.”
Hearing this, Jiang Ran thought it was about his failed onboarding training.
He thought there might be some turnaround, so he happily opened the door.
The moment he opened it, a notification rang in his head: [Ding! Dangerous person detected. Points +9. Points +9. Points +...]
Jiang Ran was already used to this.
Dangerous people were closer to him than his own relatives.
But the next second: [Ding! Detected that the host is about to encounter danger! Points +10! Points +10! Points +...]
In the blink of an eye, a million curses raced through Jiang Ran’s mind.
He tried to close his security door.
But in that instant, the young man about the same age as him suddenly whipped out a knife from behind and swung it straight at Jiang Ran.
Bang!
Luckily, Jiang Ran’s Danger Warning had alerted him in time, plus his reflexes were fast, and he hadn’t opened the door very wide.
Before the knife could come down, the door was already shut.
So, that strike landed on the security door.
It didn’t do any damage to the security door.
“Huh? Why’d he close the door the moment he saw me? Do I look that much like a bad guy? Or did he notice the knife I had hidden behind my back?”
The young man put away his knife, scratching his head in confusion.
He couldn’t quite figure it out.
He had just seen Jiang Ran inside the door and confirmed he was the person in the photo.
Then he prepared to chop Jiang Ran across the face with one swing, taking his life.
But just as he had that thought and was about to swing,
the next second, the door closed.
“Ah, no wonder. Killing this lab rat gives people a huge lead. His perception and reaction time are incredibly strong and fast!”
“Looks like my usual straightforward way of handling things doesn’t work on some people.”
Inside the door.
Outside, the young man marveled at Jiang Ran’s incredible perception and reaction speed.
Inside, Jiang Ran pressed his right hand to his heart, leaned his back against the door, and gasped heavily.
He was stunned by how fast that person’s knife had been.
If he had closed the door just a little more slowly, even if he hadn’t been hit, that guy would have definitely forced his way in.
“Is that guy a psycho? He just tried to kill me without a word?”
Jiang Ran closed his eyes, the face of the young man outside the door seared into his memory.
It was a complete stranger he had never seen before.
“I’ll call the police!”
He quickly scurried to the dining table, exited the TikTok app on his phone, and dialed 110.
After that, Jiang Ran sent a message to Manager Wu Meiling.
“What’s going on? Some guy just knocked on my door saying you sent him up to inform me about something, but he tried to chop me!!!! If I hadn’t reacted fast enough and closed the door in time, he would’ve killed me!!!”
Manager Wu Meiling was still in the management office on the first floor of Building No. 2, knitting a sweater. When she saw Jiang Ran’s message,
she pressed the bottom of her phone with interest and sent a voice message:
“Huh? I don’t know what you’re talking about! Who was it?”
She played her part convincingly.
Jiang Ran replied: “I don’t know who it was either, that’s why I wanted to ask you.”
Manager Wu Meiling: “I never sent anyone up to find you. If there was something important, I would have contacted you directly by phone. Why would I go through all that trouble?”
Jiang Ran replied: “I know. It’s just that my brain wasn’t working at the time. I thought maybe there was a turnaround with the onboarding training.”
Manager Wu Meiling: “There’s no turnaround for that. The only chance is waiting for the next onboarding training.”
Jiang Ran: “If the next one isn’t in the country, I’m not going even if you kill me.”
Manager Wu Meiling sent three question marks.
Jiang Ran didn’t explain the specific reason. Instead, he sent a crying emoji.
His experience in Aisen Town was something he would never forget for the rest of his life.
Not only was there a language barrier, but there was also a ton of danger.
Especially the last part, where he got locked up in a cell for three days.
Wu Meiling! You’ve killed my love!!!!
Manager Wu Meiling didn’t see Jiang Ran’s reply, so she put down her phone.
Staring out at the pitch-black darkness, she muttered to herself, “So it didn’t work after all. Young man, you still need more honing.”
Back at Jiang Ran’s place.
The police arrived quickly. This time, they were the same fake cops impersonating the apartment’s management.
But Jiang Ran didn’t know that. He naively told the fake cops everything that had happened and described the suspect’s appearance, begging them to arrest that suspect as soon as possible.
These fake cops from the apartment had impressive acting skills. Faced with this situation, they managed to hold it together without cracking a smile.
After seeing off the fake cops,
Jiang Ran returned to the dining table.
With all this commotion, the noodles that were piping hot earlier had now cooled down significantly.
There was no choice. He had to take them back to the kitchen and reheat them.
But reheated noodles would never taste as good as the first time around.
