Chapter 556 - 544: Secrets of the Past
"Is this the freedom you desire?"
An old voice echoed in Li Wei’s mind.
He came back to his senses.
He found that the door in front of him was already open, and an old man with a white beard stood in the doorway.
The man didn’t seem to be one of the Elf Race People.
He didn’t have pointed ears.
The white-bearded old man looked at Li Wei, his emerald-green eyes seemingly containing the entire universe.
He seemed to have seen through the doubt in Li Wei’s heart.
The white-bearded old man said with a smile, "Please, come in."
"As you can see, I am not of the Elf Race."
After speaking, the white-bearded old man turned to Laya, who was behind Li Wei.
"Little Laya, it’s been a long time."
"Grandpa Sage, I’m so sorry to have disturbed you," Laya said, a little embarrassed.
Bringing Li Wei to see the Sage hadn’t been a whim of hers.
It was a task given to her by the Green Tree Lord, Delvin.
Laya had undergone the Sage’s trial, making her the best candidate for this task.
The old Sage chuckled, not minding at all.
Laya knew very well that the moment Delvin gave her the task, the Sage had likely already known about it.
In her eyes, the Sage was omniscient.
Li Wei stepped into the room.
The Sage’s room was furnished very simply.
There was only a table placed by the window, with nothing on it.
Other than that, the room only contained a bed and three stools.
It didn’t look at all like a place where a normal person would live.
The Sage poured Li Wei and Laya each a cup of Wisdom Tea, brewed with Moonlight Lake Water.
In truth, it had no special properties; it was just ordinary lake water used to brew tea.
But because the Sage was the one who served it, those who came after him called it Wisdom Tea.
As if drinking it would increase one’s wisdom.
This might also have been a rumor spread by people who, after meeting the Sage, went around bragging about it.
"Please, sit."
The Sage gestured for Li Wei to sit down.
Li Wei clasped his hands in a formal greeting. "I am Li Wei. It is an honor to meet you, Sage."
Only after completing the greeting did he sit down.
Laya, however, was already used to it and had taken her seat before Li Wei even had the chance.
Li Wei looked at the Sage, and the Sage looked back at Li Wei.
The Sage smiled faintly. "Let’s continue our earlier conversation."
"Are you still curious about who I am?"
"To be precise, I am neither a human, nor an Elf."
"Many years ago, I was a tree. A Wisdom Oak Tree."
A look of surprise appeared on Li Wei’s face.
The Wisdom Oak Tree was incredibly famous; of course he knew of it.
Legend had it that the Wisdom Oak Tree was an incarnation of the Knowledge God, and that it was omniscient.
This was the first time Li Wei had ever seen a Wisdom Oak Tree that had turned into a human.
The Sage said with a gentle smile, "My transformation into a human was a great coincidence. You need not be too curious about it."
"The pursuit of knowledge is certainly a rare and valuable instinct, but one must also know how to restrain one’s instincts."
"Just like the freedom you yearn for."
Li Wei looked at the Sage and mused, ’Freedom?’
Through the Sage’s test, he had discovered the ultimate goal his heart pursued.
He didn’t know if he truly yearned for freedom.
But he was certain he did not want to be shackled.
Li Wei shook his head, clearing his thoughts. He looked at the Sage and said, "This is something I will find the truth of for myself."
He felt that no one else could help him with it.
People’s hearts are fickle; he couldn’t even grasp his own thoughts.
Li Wei was more inclined to discuss objective matters with the Sage.
For example, the meaning behind the token of the Holy Dragon Inheritance.
The potential deep-seated relationship between the Holy Dragon Race, the Beastman Race, and the Elf Race.
These were all things Li Wei wanted to know.
Looking further ahead, he also wanted to know how to resolve the plague of Demonization and help the Demonized Creatures return to normal.
Li Wei hadn’t forgotten that Gu Sewei was facing the threat of Demonization.
Li Wei looked at the Sage and asked, "Lord Sage, do you know the purpose of my visit?"
The Sage chuckled and said, "Your heart is filled with many questions. If you’re referring to the one thing you want to know most right now, then I suppose I have a rough idea."
"Oh? In that case, I ask for your guidance, Lord Sage," Li Wei said respectfully, a flash of pleasant surprise in his eyes.
The Sage said, "According to the rules, since you have passed one of my trials, you are entitled to ask me one question."
"Have you decided to ask me this question?"
Without hesitation, Li Wei nodded and replied, "Yes. Please tell me the truth behind it all."
Laya sat to the side, watching the two of them speak in riddles, a completely baffled look on her face.
She had no idea what they were talking about.
However, she was already used to the way the Sage spoke.
Laya glanced at Li Wei with some surprise. She hadn’t expected him to be so hard to understand as well.
The Sage smiled faintly and said, "This involves a secret from the past concerning the Divine Spirits."
"As for the specific details, it is not appropriate for me to tell you."
"Three feet above your head are the Gods."
Upon hearing this, Li Wei understood immediately and nodded.
"Lord Sage, please speak."
A reminiscent look appeared on the Sage’s face before his expression turned serious. "You must understand one thing: in ages past, the Human Race was not the only one to have Gods."
Li Wei was stunned for a moment, thinking to himself: ’Only the Human Race has Gods?’
’What does that sentence mean?’
’Don’t the Elf Race and the Beastman Race have Gods?’
He looked at the Sage, and their eyes met.
Li Wei seemed to understand the meaning of that sentence.
In the past, the Elf Race and the Beastman Race both had their own Gods.
Now, those Gods have vanished.
’But what does this have to do with the Dragon Race?’
The Sage said with approval, "That’s right. Just as you thought, the Dragon Race once had a God as well."
Li Wei’s eyes narrowed slightly.
’Vanished Gods?’
’Could this be the secret hidden behind the Holy Dragon Race, the Beastman Race, and the Elf Race?’
After a moment of thought, Li Wei raised his head and looked up.
