Gundam Fire Still

Gundam's War Remains, Chapter 21

"So that's a fair result, obviously. But the first ones sent were among our own, and I'm hoping those friendly forces will see to it that we don't open fire, for the sake of our Intelligence Unity's identification numbers."

"Exactly you'll also have to hope that you can get close enough to get within communication distance and that you're not attacked, or at least not sunk, before then. Neutron jamming is just nasty stuff." The former captain made no effort to hide his distaste for this new combat environment.

"So the best thing to do is to squash the idea of it happening, nothing will happen if everything goes according to plan."

"It's never been your style to lie to yourself, Dan, have you learned that since you've been an assistant director, tell me, what are the odds of something going wrong as calculated by the analysts under you?"

"It's high, higher than any covert operation I've ever seen the devil in, you know, the probability of a leak is proportional to the square of the number of people who know about it, and there's a lot of people on both sides who need to be involved, and I think the probability has to be magnified a little more in the calculation of the engineers and designers of Orb. But that's just a reference value." Dan began to pace back and forth in his office.

"What I'm suggesting is that you make the calculations twice as likely as the theoretical probability of something going wrong with all of the Orb participants, at least twice as likely. They're neutral, still in a peaceful world, and the country is a mix of Adjusters and Naturals, plus there's no cleanliness among the several large families in the country, and if what I learned in officer school and what I heard at the CIA back in the day is correct, that kind of place is a spy's paradise."

"True, so you wouldn't want to know the odds of that being figured out. Even if you did know," Dan shook his head "even if you did know you'd still be dry, the Military Equipment Commission knows something else, neither Lockheed nor the consortium behind that Perestroika can give them what they want, ORB is the only chance, or are you going to take Plant into account? "

"So the one thing I've been thinking about while I've been up in space," Rick straightened up from his chair, "is really, there's no other option, other possibility, alternative yet? Except for the hell with MS."

"I made it clear to you that the rest of the scenarios are being worked on as well, but the techs are saying we can't expect too much, and most of them are just stopgap fixes."

"That's not right, don't we have plenty of ships that can take down MS, and MA pilots? Didn't those lads give the guys on the equipment committee some other possibilities?"

"Now you're lying to yourself Rick, you know the exchange ratio, I can also give you the battle data for the Moonface Marines right now, most of those results are now being paid for with the boys lives, so this has to go on." Dan smiled bitterly, "Actually there's a little bit of good news, of all the possible targets that could be leaked, we only have to defend ourselves against Zaft, if it was leaked to Eurasia, or East Asia's intelligence service, that wouldn't be a problem anymore. It might be better to think of it that way."

"But then there's the pirates and mercenaries, the waste merchants, those guys are as cunning as jungle guerrillas and have the same sense of smell as vultures, and I don't want to hear anything from them."

"Compared to when you were in the Cosmic Army, those fellows are down quite a bit now."

"But the rest are certainly the most troublesome, believe me; but Dan, I'm sure we've been talking for a while now, don't you want to give your old alumni a cup of coffee or something?"

"Actually what I'm suggesting is that we go to the mess hall for lunch. Then in the afternoon I'll have you meet with a few of the officers from the first group. We've chosen the less noticeable young men for security reasons, but they're the cleverest ones." Dan said heading for the office door, "They should be here right now learning the code of secrecy and basic covert operations common sense, hell, there's just not enough time."

"There's never enough time, old Fritz, there's no way around it. I remember in the Fleet always saying that the canteens in the base administration block were better than those in the port area, so I'll go with you this time to see what I can do. Besides, I believe I need to attend this training as well."

----. --- Here's the author's dividing line ---. ------. --- is about to go into the original plot, so there may be a certain amount of knuckle-dragging going on, as well as adjustments to the writing style and whatnot. Sorry again for the lack of a dialogue stream for the protagonist, but it's necessary in order to make some sort of catch-up to Plan G. Thanks to Sgt. Winster of the Giant Ship Cannon Party for the fire support above!

17.The Secret Service Fleet (below)

The time was drawing near, and everyone in the Second Task Force felt it, after the representative from the Budget Committee, Rick Eisenhorn, joined in, the last piece of the puzzle from Earth outside the military had been filled. With the addition of Rick Eisenhorn from the Budget Committee, the final piece of the puzzle from Earth outside the military has been completed. Then the fleet was waiting for its final orders.

"If you have any more questions, I'd like to have them resolved at this meeting, but once the operation begins, you'll be on your own." The Undersecretary of Intelligence Integration hinted that this might be the last meeting. Dan looked at one of the faces in the conference room, they hadn't left the battlefield to go on vacation, if all went well they could come back not one less person, but he was well aware that that would be nearly impossible.

"So I'll start by asking, as planned we'll be leaving to meet up with this team as soon as the ships are completed, will the new build have basic combat capabilities at this point?" Eisenhorn, the most theoretically senior, was the first to speak.

"With all due respect, sir, if we are expected to follow the schedule, we'll be sailing as soon as the ORB's ships and MS are completed. It's almost impossible to form a fighting force, the ships are brand new, we've had no time to break in, and..."

"And as planned, the assigned pilots rendezvoused with the home team at the same time as they sailed, which meant there was absolutely no time to adjust the OS and get acquainted with the hull, sir," Carl picked up on the words of the Major, Major Wiseman was the interim captain of the newly built ship that was scheduled to be underway, and it was clear that he didn't have much confidence regarding a ship that didn't yet exist.

"The MS's OS we've developed separately on the moon surface, Captain, that's the latest plan. The personalized tuned OS assigned to your pilots will arrive with the pilots themselves, and while the only body they can use as a reference here is Ginn, it should speed up the adaptation process. We believe the ORB Twilight Society, which had an Adjuster involved in its development, should also use an Adjuster-style OS, and the command-integrated design we are using should be more suitable for naturals." It was a colonel in charge of technology at Ptolemy Base who responded, "I recall you making a similar suggestion, and Squad 0396 supports that, so the OS may not be a concern. But the battleships..." He spread his hands, "It's only up to you."

"In other words, when they first left the factory, the combat effectiveness of the ships was problematic? Major Wiseman."

"Indeed," the dark-haired Major Wiseman replied with a frown, "It's good to be up and running, combat is hard to hope for."

"Captain Lamias, you're in charge of the ship's technical program, what do you think on that point?" A senior staff officer at the Ptolemy base was likewise present.

"Technically, both the ship's armament and the MS can be familiarized during the manufacturing process. But even so, familiarity with the technical equipment is only the first step to having combat power." The named female officer replied somewhat hesitantly "With our ignorance of newbuilds and MS, sir, judging from past experience, it's hard to have combat power in a short period of time. But the newbuilds should have enough time to get used to the new weapons."

"That's true in general, Captain Lamias, but this is a special case because the ships are launched in a neutral country, and whatever is best assigned to that base, it will take some time to make the voyage to return, and even if the base sends an escort ship it will take time to rendezvous, and until then.... It better have some ability to defend itself." Rick. Eisenhorn shook his head slightly, answering with the sophistication of a former battleship commander.

"We, and the Atlantic Federation, can only try to give you as many men as possible on the voyage, but since it is a secret entry, the number is limited." Dan. Fritz made an apologetic gesture, "More can only be done by you taking all the time you need to familiarize yourselves with your ship, even though it doesn't exist yet."

"But what's with those Marines? It doesn't make sense to bring so many Marines on a covert operation in a neutral country, sir." Roy questioned, "I'm sure we should be able to bring enough bridge personnel with their quota."

"It's true that you shouldn't take marines if it's a regular covert operation, that's a good question Roy, this exception won't be put on the textbook because the ORB is a unique situation." Dan began to talk freely "We know that the main political forces in ORB are several large families, the political situation there is still relatively stable at the moment, which means that a certain balance has been reached between several families, but conflicts still occur from time to time, and this balance is often fragile. While the dominant Uzmi faction and the Dawning Society have now agreed to a cooperative project with us, the other families aren't necessarily going to put up with it. They can buy us off at a good price if they want to upset that balance. We have to show that even in ORB, a neutral country with an ambiguous attitude, we have the ability to defend ourselves from anyone who might try to beat us up. You know, it could very well happen. Allowing our men to enter the country secretly, without even asking about those Marines, shows that the Lion of ORB is no slouch, and he knows full well that the Combine won't betray us, but someone else might."

"So this is sort of using us to deter misbehavior?" Roy's expression didn't look happy.

"While their calculations are good, this also gives us some convenience." This time, Rick . Eisenhorn smiled like a businessman, "Keep a firm eye on their designers and technicians, Captain Lamias, Major Wiseman, all the technicians, and Captain Black, with the Marines behind them, they must take our design requirements seriously. This joint has provided them with a pretty valuable pool of technology, so it's imperative that they build something that meets our requirements, whether it's an MS or a battleship. As the representative from the budget committee, I have to make sure that every penny is being spent in the right place."

"Also, Roy, you can have command of the Marines, I know you are unsure of the security provided by the ORB, and so am I. Staff Sergeant Decker will be under your command, which is likewise one of the purposes of bringing in the Marines. It's also better to be understaffed on a voyage than to have a problem right in the middle of construction."

"And you know how the worst of it is." Roy read something from the corner of his top man's mouth that wasn't being said.

"If there are no further questions, I am about to announce important matters, all officers on the Second Special Service Fleet, Command Sequence are present, what you are about to hear is top secret. By order of the United Space Force, Ptolemy Base Command, the first sub-crews of the Second Special Service Fleet will begin operations on T-Day aboard the Leda Group's ore carrier and secretly enter the ORB Joint Headland Colonial Satellite Sun City (note: that's Heliopolis). And Rick. Dr. Eisenhorn and several other civilian technicians from Earth will enter under the guise of a visit to the ORB I.T. and Aurora, and will meet you at Aurora, over."

Dan removed his previously serious expression and smiled "Pack your bags and go, good luck."

0. Written at the beginning

For the secret service fleet heading to ORB, the war had been far away for a while. But only the people in that small land had such preferential treatment, and only temporarily.

------. ------. ------. ------. ------. ------. ------. ------. --- CE705 Moon Earth

Everyone in the Eurasian United North African Legion knew that a Zaft attack was imminent.

The Zaft, with roots in Australia, have been exchanging goods with their cosmic nest in both directions, no doubt launching iron ore and the like upwards from Australia, and getting all manner of reinforcements; and the ever-pressured Cosmic Army has made no attempt to hinder this - they really can't, but that won't do in the slightest! Alleviate the dissatisfaction of ground troops with them.

The initial chaos on Earth quickly calmed down after a few weeks of descent, and after all, it took Zaft a considerable amount of time to establish physical control over Australia, so the three entities in Eurasia, Atlantic, and East Asia were given a respite and time to recuperate, and all three began to make orderly preparations for land warfare - if the United Space Force wasn't ironclad! ", then on land they would be three almost completely unrelated entities, if they weren't facing the same enemy. And Zaft also sent their submarines (which were confirmed long afterwards to be carrying MS) to attack ships on the Earth side almost indefinitely around the Arabian Sea and try to seize control of the sea. Since the fleets around the Persian Gulf have either withdrawn or been sunk by enemy submarines and underwater MS, the land forces in North Africa (whether belonging to the Eurasian Union or to the punching bag African Community) have lost hope of getting support from the sea-. -although there were a few better-than-nothing missile and torpedo boats in port in the Red Sea, no one could expect them to do any wonders. In any case, Zaft's next plan was bound to be to land somewhere. Initially, high-altitude reconnaissance planes were able to venture out over Carpentaria to take some reconnaissance photos so that Eurasia and East Asia could barely judge their strength, but then Zaft assigned air combat MSs and such dangerous flights were temporarily halted, and while those MSs themselves didn't have enough lift to reach the high-altitude reconnaissance planes and drones, they soon developed auxiliary vehicles to fly those bamboo dragonflies to the enough altitude. On the other hand, while the orbiting reconnaissance satellites weren't blind, the pictures they could take couldn't get to the people who needed those things in time because of neutron interference, so the Eurasian and East Asian unions, caught in a serious intelligence crisis, had no way of determining the exact time and scale of Zaft's attack. Logically, their best route would have been to invade the Indian subcontinent from Australia through Southeast Asia - although the Equatorial Union has remained strictly neutral, the Eurasian Union doesn't think the Adjusters will be benevolent enough to respect that - in fact millions of people in India alone have been affected by the energy problems caused by the neutron jamming alone! death. So the combined Eurasian forces set up a, what was considered to be, stronger line of defense along the Arabian Sea.

However, to everyone's surprise, the location where the massive Zaft fleet was first spotted by the Combine was the South Atlantic. Although the planet was in a severe energy crisis, there was still a portion of the undersea sonar array that was not disabled, and after some perhaps somewhat nervy sonar soldier heard a noise of unexplained origin but also completely uncharacteristic cross-referencing in the database and raised the alarm, a sufficiently lucky destroyer arrived in the area and dropped active sonar buoys, reflecting sound waves that honestly reflected the Everything beneath the surface of the sea. There was no doubt that something had been spotted, and that captain immediately realized what those echoes meant - a whole fleet of ships identifiable in the clutter - and although the destroyer didn't live to bring the news back, the buoy In itself, it was like dropping a pebble on calm waters, and almost every ship in that submerged fleet reacted differently, surfacing, diving, accelerating, decelerating, firing MS, firing torpedoes. The sonar array recorded it all faithfully, though all that could be immediately discerned were the explosions of a few rocket depth charges, and the sound of the hull being destroyed, metal breaking and being crushed by the water pressure. No doubt the lucky destroyer wasn't lucky enough to make it back alive.

A mystery has been solved for the Combined Forces, Zaft is not without a fleet, but simply replacing surface battle groups with underwater fleets with MS carrying capabilities. There is no doubt that these underwater air carriers were by no means developed in the last few months, they must have been built from the time Zaft first occupied Australia, or directly from the PLANT homeland airdropped to Earth, to be able to accumulate such a large number, the other side had obviously been planning for a long time ---. Although this conclusion no longer made much sense; the Union Army still could not understand the purpose of this huge underwater fleet entering the Atlantic via the Arabian Sea, around the Cape of Good Hope, and did they intend to attack the Atlantic Union mainland in the Americas?

In any case, a fleet was assembled for interception. It was almost a doomed operation, though.

------. --- Here's the author's dividing line ---. ------. ------. ------. -- another accidental writing of a war history style, damn it. But the characters will show up. there's a lot to write about on the battlefields around the world during MS development, and on the other hand, the MS development ORB daily I find really hard to write about, so I made this plan to fill up the timeline with extra chapters. So let's kick off the main character-kun for a while. There will be drama in the Archangel Wanderings. Well, sorry for the lack of updates in the next few weeks, but it's very likely. Above.

2. Desert Storm (medium)

Instead of driving as a reconnaissance unit at the front of the formation as usual, the Weasel reconnaissance vehicle was sandwiched between two BMP71 infantry fighting vehicles, for which the lieutenant offered no explanation. The driver was slightly surprised, but since the vehicle's nominal boss, the warrant officer, had said nothing, he'd better keep quiet.

Valeria. Warrant Officer Bokarpov's eyes were on one of the vehicle's data terminals, most of its original data link had been cut off by neutron jamming, and now the screen only showed this one lonely line that slowly stretched: their current path of advance. But the Warrant Officer's eyes weren't focused on the tiny LCD screen, she was thinking about something else, and as an intelligence officer it had to be a mistake to ignore the tactics the new enemy aircraft might employ, but she was sure her experience as an intelligence officer would allow her to think of something more than the mechanized infantry lieutenant, and she tried to force herself to think. What did she know about herself? The Eurasian Union's defenses were intact but vulnerable, Zaft was undermanned on the ground but had a strong desire to attack, they had an elite commando unit, and their recon drones and MS had been circling over the Union for days. The jammed radar guidance might have been able to shoot down some of the slower drones in the Combine, but the reality of the weakened guidance allowed some of the enemy's other recon units to come back alive with their recon data.

So if they wanted to raid a certain place, then they should be able to find it easily. If the lieutenant was right, the raid would be in a few hours, but the question was, where? Maybe there's an equally good question, what do they want? Even if one commando was enough to cause chaos, those MS troops that had been advancing after the first battle of Gibraltar and hadn't stopped slightly at all to recuperate couldn't have eaten the entire North African army in one go, unless they also had reinforcements...reinforcements? He she felt a cold sweat breaking out on her back, some sort of possibility blurring into her brain, coming close to that answer, she thought.

Jettfrid suddenly heard the radio go off, which was a rather rare thing, and although there was no order for radio silence, the radio was generally silent during the march under the suppression of neutron interference. But he soon saw the source of the communication.

"Warrant Officer? If you want me to explain why we don't front scout vehicles..."

"No, you listen to me" interrupted as usual, but her voice sounded a little different, some sort of quick gasp that indicated she was nervous or in a hurry, something a little unusual about this "I think I know where we, no, where they're going." Jettfrid felt himself getting nervous too.

Dakusta wiped the beads of sweat from his face before he realized that his hands were covered in sweat as well. The unskilled job of marching didn't require much manipulation for MS, just set the route and the machine would be enough to do everything automatically - as long as the road wasn't Something unusual was happening. But he still gripped the joystick tightly, probably because he was nervous, he told himself so, after all it was the first time for him to lead a group independently, his captain had split the group in half and attacked two separate targets, so he had to take responsibility for the men assigned to his side of the group. He was confused as to why his captain had chosen the other target, it didn't seem that important, but the captain was after all a veteran of the first few batches of Zaft, he always had his reasons, Dakusta shook his head and watched the moment tick by bit on the mission clock at the bottom of the screen.

The command interface on the side of the main screen was as usual, with the few bodies in the squad marked in green and the pilot in good condition; the images on the front screen were as monotonous as ever, as were the simple desert roads in the sandy seas of North Africa, traversing from dune to dune, with only the electronic map and the numbers bouncing off the mission clock in the other corner to bring the realism of the team on the move.
