Hakai no Miko

Lesson 5, First Corner - Numbers 2

The chief treasurer rushed into the home of a colleague whose banquet was being held when the banquet had turned bright blue.

One of my colleagues, who was already occasionally starting to get drunk, greets the lead CFO with a liquor glass in his hand.

"That was late. Well, let's have a drink first."

That's what I'm going to say, and I'm going to recommend the liquor. The tax officer shook off in the dark.

No way, colleagues who didn't think they'd get this kind of trick would be more flashy than angry.

The lead treasurer told him in a painful tone after he glanced around licking the banquet seat with a white atmosphere.

"Be honest with me. Has anyone in this got their hands on wheat?

As soon as I got there, a few people gave me the look of a bad rash and turned away. The lead treasurer who finds himself aiming for it is exasperated.

"Oh, my God! You decided wheat was under my jurisdiction!

"Don't be so angry. I had some unplanned expenses, and I just borrowed them. I'll be right back."

"Oh. We're like each other here, aren't we?

The face of the lead treasurer to his coworkers with a humble grin turned bright red with anger first, then lost his blood and blued.

Because I couldn't say it back.

In retrospect, it was only at the beginning that care was taken to ensure that embezzlement was not exposed. The tension that embezzlement might expose to King Vritas' brother, who had no interest in government as long as he gave him booze and a woman, also diminished at times, and he had his hands on taxes under the jurisdiction of others, "if it were just himself".

"Oh my god...!

The lead tax officer, who changed his complexion as if repainted with pigment, finally lost his strength from his ankle and sat down on the spot.

It was then that my colleagues finally realized it wasn't just a joke.

"What the hell is going on?

The lead treasurer shrugs at the inquiry.

"... I'm finding out"

"Are you finding out?

Asked in return, the lead treasurer yelled.

"That's right! They're finding out! The new lord guy realizes we're embezzling!

The lead treasurer took all the time to figure out how it had been. When you spit it all out, the fuzz and anger boil in the bosom of the lead CFO.

"Goddamn it! I pushed it all right on the Vritas bastards, and you did it on your own! Because of you! Because of you!

Even from the faces of my colleagues who finally figured things out, I felt blood all at once.

"You said you saw the books this morning, didn't you? So, what, you already found out about the embezzlement?

"You know that! The new lord said he spotted embezzlement at a glance!

"Hih, at a glance...?

"That's right! I didn't even use the calculator board, I spotted embezzlement at a glance!

To the anger of the lead treasurer, the banquet seat quietly returned to Shin.

For a while the officials had silently looked at each other, but one of them makes a terrible suggestion.

"So, but why don't you just happen to insist that I made the wrong calculation? See, for what's gone, if you decide that all the beasts who fished the warehouse on their own were brought out..."

Between the officials, that's what happens, and there's a blast of air.

But it was also blown away with a word someone whined about.

"Maybe... didn't you know that from the beginning?

That was nothing but misguided speculation at all.

But from them, it's a convincing story rather than an instant finding of embezzlement from a record I've never seen before.

"Did you know? But now..."

"If you say so..."

The official swallowed his knob with one loud throat.

"- The first time I gathered us together and said, 'I won't tolerate injustice', that meant now, if you say so..."

Besides, the officials woke up drunk at once.

So this is what you threatened to do with your neck?

"So, but how can you say that we are abusive?

"Sure, that kid is the son of a goddess of death and destruction..."

"No way, with your child's power...?

(OBI) You run deliberately into the air.

"I hear I wiped out that army led by General Darius with strange force..."

"That's not all. General Darius is stuck in the mansion, dying of a terrible curse..."

Speculation calls for speculation, and whenever it pops up to absurd rumors. The officials were no longer aware that they were beginning to make their own reasons, rather than exploring the reasons why injustice had been exposed.

In the meantime, one official stands up to kick his seat.

"Now that I have remembered the exigency, I beg your pardon!

With that said, he resigned from the mansion for the time being to take what he would take.

In the bosom of the officials, the words "you ran away" come to mind at the same time.

Cutting it off, one official after the other took their seats.

"I had to do something, too. Now, excuse me!

"I have plans coming up, too, so excuse me!

"My wife is sick, so am I."

Soon all the guests resigned, and the official, the owner of the mansion left alone, uttered an excuse without telling anyone.

"Wow, my mother is in danger too..."

◆ ◇ ◆ ◇ ◆

The next morning, as the Ethereal Horse finished eating Shemr's cooked breakfast, looking at the notes she had taken yesterday with her preview, Michena jumped in there pretending her hair was messed up.

"Ha, it's tough, lord!

To Michena's appearance, the Ethereal Horse, who he perceived to be no good, asks a serious question.

"What the hell happened?

Then Michena, paling her face, said terribly.

"Well, that's what all the government officials haven't been served as one this morning. So, if you're worried and you're at home..."

So, Michena says.

"- Your home was a stuffed shell, and no one was there!

For a moment, I didn't even understand what they said. After a while of confusion, the Ethereal Horse returned to me to try to grasp the situation.

"What, there wasn't even a family member?

"Yes! Plus, the house is so messed up, it's like they even got into a night burglar!

In unexpected circumstances, the pale horse often faces Shemr.

"... what do you mean, Soma?

"I don't know. - Anyway, let's find out where the officials are."

As Ethereal Horse asked him to find out where the officials were, a report soon came up from the gatekeeper who was packing them at the entrance to the city.

At the same time that the city gate opened this morning, officials left the city with their families in a carriage loaded with heavy baggage. The gatekeepers did not blame it, nor did they report it, because the Ethereal Horse had previously informed them that they would not hold back if they wanted to leave the city.

If you left the city without following yourself, I don't think the Ethereal Horse has a choice.

But it's weird how many people who didn't even show such a bare gesture until the day before leave so that it's time to run away from the city, as I've shown you. I was just suspicious of behavior as if it were a night escape in a group.

"Shemr! Contact Mr. Gallam and the others. Hurry up and get the people who escaped!

"Oh, okay!

Garam, contacted by Shemr, prepared a tracking unit and himself went under Harpuran's Pipi Tot Gigi.

"I'm sorry, but I need your help"

"I understand, Lord Gallam!

In response to Gallam's request, Pipi gave his pleasure with a thin chest.

A few hours had already passed since the officials fled the city, but the delay of that magnitude would not be any problem for Harpuran, who travelled through the great sky. Not to mention that the carriage of the officials, even if loaded with luggage, will also blunt their legs.

When the seven Harpuans, flying from the city of Bornis, instantly spotted the carriage of officials running noronorously down the street, they led Zoan's tracking unit and captured no one left behind.

And the captives were towed before the horses, so that they might be dragged by Gallam and the others in that day. The officials tied with ropes in the back of their hands seemed to have already noticed, and they talked to Bella Bella about why they had escaped without having to interrogate her.

The Ethereal Horse, who heard it all the way, said in half surprised, half frightened.

"I mean, you thought you found out you were embezzling, so you fled the city?

On the palate of the Ethereal Horse, the officials bothered.

"What if... I hadn't noticed...?

On behalf of everyone, the lead treasurer asks terribly.

Then the Ethereal Horse snorted and answered openly.

"Yeah. I noticed the calculations weren't right, but I don't think they were embezzled."

"But notice the calculations aren't right! So, embezzlement! But if you haven't noticed?!, stupid! I can't possibly calculate without a calculation board! I was looking into it beforehand. It's been decided!

The lead treasurer, realizing that they were making a hell of a mistake, said something confusing and disjointed. The Ethereal Horse, who does not understand what is so surprising, answers honestly, albeit under barometric pressure (keo) to the sword screen of the lead treasurer.

"Normally, I just looked at the books and calculated..."

"I can calculate...?!"

The chief treasurer's jaw fell.

It was the early point (haya disappointment) of the lead treasurer who assumed that he could not even calculate it, even though he had just been told that he could not read or write. But without being taught, it's impossible to tell you to assume that the Ethereal Horse is a dropper from another world and simply doesn't know the letters and numbers of this world.

Moreover, the Ethereal Horse, not knowing that, puts a pursuit into the lead CFO.

"Nothing, we don't use equations or functions, and if we can add up and deduct, that's enough, right? And then about multiplying and apportioning. But even when it comes to calculations, that's about it..."

"That, gu, about...?!"

No longer, the lead treasurer was on the verge of graduation.

Already in this world, there are also arithmetics such as equations using geometry and algebra that determine the area of various shapes and the volume of 3D.

But that's only a limited story for those studying arithmetic such as a very small number of bachelors and sage men.

Some of their officials who used calculations as food for life even the four rule calculations that were the basis of arithmetic were at best added and deducted, and when multiplied or divided, they lost their sense of convergence (diapers).

As multiplication was regarded as the upbringing of aristocracy in the peacetime of Japan, multiplication and apportionment in this world was one of the advanced upbringing of only a very limited number of aristocrats and officials.

However, the lead treasurer becomes flabbergasted by the Ethereal Horse, who describes such advanced upbringing as "about".

Still, the lead treasurer manages to squeeze his temper and say.

"So, but even if you can calculate, if you don't have a calculation board...!

I didn't know what the lead treasurer called the "Abacus" and what they were, but I thought they were probably Abacus' people, and Aoima replied.

"That's enough paper and pen, right?

Again, the lead treasurer gets flabbergasted.

For them, when doing a big calculation like putting it on the books, there had to be a calculation board. Yet the lead treasurer blurts out to the Ethereal Horse, who said "pen and paper would suffice" and actually found a computational difference in a short amount of time.

"No, silly...... I can't believe I can calculate just paper and pen..."

There was a reason why the lead treasurer couldn't believe it so much.

The reason for this is the difference between the numbers used by the Ethereal Horse and the officials.

The numbers used in this world have only symbols representing positions one, ten, one hundred… and no symbols representing positions two to nine. For this reason, to denote two to nine, it was decided to write the symbols as many times as possible.

Let's use that to write down the number 15468.

Using the Arabic numbers that modern Japanese use on a daily basis, they can be expressed in just five letters. But just as this was the number used in the Continent of Cerdeas, when we write ten thousand as §, one thousand as @, one hundred as *, ten as +, one as |, we get the following:

§ ||||||||

At first glance alone, it would be a good idea to say that it is very elusive.

In addition, let's divide this number by four.

To calculate, you have to count how many numbers are in each position and start by figuring out the overall number. It's also a big hassle to actually calculate from there.

However, it is only a simple calculation of 15468 ÷ 4 if expressed in a fractional method using Arabic numerals. With a little paper and a pen, this is a problem that even elementary school students can solve.

High-school-level mathematical knowledge and Arabic numbers, which Ethereal Horse only takes for granted, had to be stunned even by the government and other officials who are in the business (i.e.) of handling numbers in this Serdeas continent.

But the Ethereal Horse, who did not know it was so, did not understand the surprise of the officials. Shemr speaks to such a pale horse.

"So, what are we gonna do with these guys?

And the less suddenly self-absorbed officials of surprise recall and tremble that the pale horse is now the one in power who holds the right to his own life and death.

"Uh-huh. - What are we gonna do?

To the appearance of such officials, the troubled Ethereal Horse gave a vague (ambiguous) grin.
