Chapter 653: One Pass, Undone!

At twenty minutes, Liverpool came closest to changing the score.

A quick exchange down the right pulled Wigan’s midfield towards the touchline.

The ball was then worked inside, where a Liverpool runner arrived to collect it just outside the penalty area.

He tried to slip a pass into the space behind the defence, but the angle was narrow.

Wigan’s centre-back read it early and stepped across, cutting out the ball before the forward could reach it.

The clearance travelled towards halfway and once again, Leo moved to collect it, but a Liverpool midfielder arrived at the same moment.

Their shoulders met as they challenged for possession, and the ball skipped away towards the touchline.

The crowd applauded the tackle as Leo turned and recovered his position without complaint.

"Good pressure from Liverpool there," Beglin observed.

"They’re not giving him much time to settle on the ball. But Wigan have defended that passage well, and that’s what both sides are doing at the moment. They’re making sure the other team doesn’t get a clean look at goal."

Drury followed the play as Liverpool began another attack.

"An intriguing opening, Jim. Plenty of intensity, plenty of organisation, but very little separating the sides."

"That’s right. Neither manager will be unhappy with the effort. The question is who can find that one moment of quality."

By the time the clock approached the half-hour mark, the match had settled into a rhythm that felt almost too precise to be comfortable.

Each side recognised the other’s intentions and responded before the danger could develop.

The ball moved from one half to the other, but clear chances remained scarce.

It was football played like a chess match, with every move answered and every opening closed before it could become a threat.

The players were not lacking ambition.

They were simply aware that one careless decision could undo everything they had worked to establish.

For thirty minutes, neither side could find the move that would tip the balance.

Then Leo stepped away from his marker.

It happened quickly, almost quietly, while Liverpool were trying to build another attack through the centre.

Leo had spent much of the opening half-hour being followed whenever he came near the ball.

This time, he moved a few yards away from his usual position, drawing his marker with him before changing direction and slipping out of the tight space.

For the first time in several minutes, he had a moment to look up, and when the ball came towards him near the centre of the pitch, he did not take a touch.

His foot met the pass, and he redirected it for the first time, sending the ball diagonally through the gap between Liverpool’s midfield and defence.

It travelled beyond the reach of Van Dijk, who had begun stepping forward to close the space, and rolled into the path of Ezra and, without faltering, the winger took it in stride.

Van Dijk turned and tried to recover, but Ezra had gained half a yard.

The Wigan fans, sensing the weight of the moment, rose to their feet, screaming at the top of their lungs and beckoning their player forward.

He carried the ball into the penalty area with Alisson Becker advancing from his line, the Liverpool goalkeeper lowering his body and spreading himself to narrow the angle.

Ezra slowed.

For a fraction of a second, it looked as though he might shoot early.

Alisson reacted, shifting his weight to prepare for the attempt.

Instead, Ezra dragged his foot across the ball and performed a sharp step-over.

Alisson committed to the wrong side, and before Alisson’s eyes could keep up, Ezra nudged the ball past him, taking it around the goalkeeper before the Brazilian could recover his balance.

The angle was tightening, and a Liverpool defender was racing towards the goalmouth, but Ezra had already made his decision.

He opened his body and passed the ball into the unguarded net, and the moment the ball crossed the line, the sound of Anfield faltered.

"EZRA! HE’S GOT IT! WIGAN HAVE FOUND THE BREAKTHROUGH!"

Drury’s voice surged over the roar from the away supporters.

"ALWAYS DANGEROUS, LEO CALDERON!! THIRTY MINUTES OF A CHESS MATCH, AND IN ONE MOMENT, LEO CALDERON HAS FOUND THE KEY! A FIRST-TIME PASS, A RUN THROUGH THE HEART OF LIVERPOOL, AND EZRA HAS THE COMPOSURE TO TAKE ALISSON OUT OF THE EQUATION!"

Beglin was already leaning forward, his voice rising with the play.

"That is excellent from Wigan! Just look at the movement from Leo. He’s been tightly marked all afternoon, but he steps away at exactly the right moment.

He doesn’t need to control the ball; he sees the run and plays it straight through. And Ezra still has a lot to do when he gets there!"

"It’s the quality of the decision, Peter," Beglin continued.

"Leo knows Ezra is moving, and he knows Van Dijk is stepping forward. He puts the ball into the space before the defender can close it. Then Ezra shows real composure. He gets Alisson moving, takes the ball around him, and finishes. No panic, no extra touch. That’s a very good goal."

Ezra wheeled away towards the corner, his arms spreading as the Wigan supporters surged against the barriers.

Teammates chased after him, some shouting, others laughing with the relief of finally breaking through a contest in which every opening had seemed to close.

Leo followed at a jog, pointing towards Ezra as he reached the group.

Ezra turned towards him, grinning, and slapped his hand against Leo’s before being swallowed by the arriving players.

Around them, the Liverpool supporters responded with a mixture of annoyance and renewed singing.

The home side had spent half an hour keeping Wigan at arm’s length, but just one pass had undone it.

On the touchline, Klopp stepped forward and clapped his hands, calling instructions towards his players.

Dawson remained near his technical area, applauding the move before turning and moving into his chair.

Liverpool would have their response, and the match was far from settled, but Wigan Athletic had taken the lead at Anfield.

Drury let the noise wash over his words as the camera returned to the centre circle.

"Thirty minutes of balance, thirty minutes of restraint, and then the smallest opening becomes the biggest opportunity.

Liverpool have been measured, Wigan have been patient, but it is the visitors who strike first."

He paused as Ezra and his teammates made their way back into position.

"One goal separates them now. And with Anfield stirred into life, the contest threatens to begin all over again."
